“Clean, pleasant, peaceful and beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

I stayed in 127B for eight days and enjoyed each one of those days. The studio was extremely clean with a sparkling modern bathroom. The furnishings were modest but clean and in good condition. (Mr. Watt does a super job taking care of the units and any need that might arise). The ocean front view has a slider opening to a small ground level patio. This was a wonderful location to both start and end the day with a beverage of choice.
The beach was raked each morning, lounge chairs brushed off and arranged in two's or three's along the beach front. There were always plenty of available chairs. There are numerous palm trees to offer shade for those who want the view but not the sun. There was no need to drive anywhere to snorkel as you can do it right from the beach. If you want to just swim, best to have reef shoes as the bottom is rough in most areas.
All of the patrons seem to be of the same mind set... If you want to dress to impress and spend your spare time shopping, this is not the place for you. If you want a casual vacation with a slower pace and beautiful scenery, this more than fits the bill.

We just returned from spending 5 nights at 127A condo at Cataways and were happy we did! It was only after reading many reviews, talking to Lyall (manages many rentals for owners) and connecting the dots tht I realized that CAstaways is actually the newest section of The Reef. So I thought I would save readers the trouble of figure this out for themselves-! I believe I was told that the castaways condos were built in 2008. The condo is actually bigger than it appears in the official website pics but the best part is that by being on the first floor, we looked right out onto the sand and ocean. Actually, after pulling the curtain aside, you can see the ocean from the living room, dining area and kitchen. So sweet to hear and see the ocean while making coffee, stroll out to the shady back patio to sip your coffee and easily zip in and out all day to lounge on the beach, snorkel or grab a cold drink. This was our first trip ever to the Cayman Islands and since we wanted to avoid any threat of Spring Breakers, we opted for the East End. We were glad we did because all the people living or visiting Castaways, The Reef and Morritt's (all within walking distance of each other) are people looking to pleasantly enjoy "Island Time." The atmosphere is very down to earth and friendly with families and people of all ages. If you stay at castaways you can use all the amenities at the Reef. We didn't use the pools as we were drawn to the ocean but we thoroughly enjoyed snorkeling ( great to start near dock at morritt's and drift along shoreline down to castaways) and eating /drinking at beach bistro/bar at The Reef. Loved my Cajun grilled mahi mahi wrap while sipping rum punch and toes wiggling in sand all the while. Our family is all about good food in comfortable atmosphere and that it was! If you want stuffy or pretentious, you can surely find that elsewhere. Staff was very friendly and accommodating too. Took part in a yoga class which was wonderful to see the ocean from the second floor veranda. Restaurant recommendation nearby: Tukka for great, fresh seafood. Also, very convenient to be able to just walk across the street for milk, coffee, sunscreen or whatever goodies you need/ forgot to bring at little grocery store. Highlight for our teenage kids was renting waverunners from Red Sail (at Morritt's) and joyriding down to a spot that we had all to ourselves for snorkeling. Andy at Red Sail was perfect as he made sure the kids had a blast yet still was safety-minded and professional with us and another older couple with us. If you need any help finding a condo, reach out to Lyall Watt as he actually called my on my cell in the States and answered all my questions when I was trying to figure out where to stay and checked in on us to make sure we had everything we needed....He works out of the Century 21 office on Grand Cayman. Also, if you need a rental car we rented one from McCurley's and B.A. was great about giving detailed information about where to eat, drive, snorkel, etc. She definitely gives a homey touch and new meaning to car renting! Also, I appreciated that her (and her partner/husband McCurley) have rental cars without huge bumper stickers like Avis or Hertz announcing to the world that you're tourists-! Of course as soon as we stepped out of the car with oddball sunburns I'm sure it was obvious. :)
Enjoy your stay! Lisa & family

If you're looking for big clubs, partying all night or raves on the beach don't book here. This is Cayman's quiet end, the East End.
This is for diving, snorkeling, kite boarding, sail boarding, beach activities, etc. It's great for family or couples looking for quality vacation time. The beach and ocean are beautiful here.
There are 2 restaurants and 2 beach bar/food spots within walking distance, there are also 5 or 6 restaurants within 2 - 20 minutes drive. Food is good to excellent in all.
The 2br suite was very clean with all the amenities from corkscrew to wifi, the bed was a little soft imho (i like firm beds).
We've been to Cayman twice and will be coming back to Castaways in the Fall.

We loved this place and all that went with it. The staff always very helpful and even added an activity during Pirates Week to give us a bus ride to George Town for the fireworks. The management was always "johnny on the spot" and as well as the grounds/maintence people. i.e. we had a lock that was contrary and within minutes we had people at the door to fix it. The snorkeling was wonderful, the sales pitch very low key and the food exceptional on their BBq night. Would definitely recommend it for those who like the quiter side. Looking out over the beach was such a plus and every unit does.

It was our first time to Grand Cayman and we lucked out choosing Castaways Cayman Beach Resort to stay at. Just like other reviewers said, this is the quiet side of the island. We rented a 1 bedroom unit for my husband, my teenage daughter and myself over Christmas vacation. For a busy week, the resort never felt crowded and you never had to fight for lounge chairs. The unit was clean, large and well equipped. The owner, Lyle, couldn't have been more accommodating and made our trip a success. We stopped at the grocery store right near the airport to shop for the week. We ate breakfast and lunch on our lovely balcony overlooking the ocean and ate at some great restaurants for dinner every night. The clean, warm, ocean is steps from the unit and the water is beautiful. I do recommend water shoes because it's not a white sand bottom everywhere, but you can find spots to stand where it is.It's a reef and you can snorkel right there. The location is great, right on the property of The Reef hotel which allows use of their pools and other amenities. Their staff was friendly and helpful. Their concierge can book you dinner reservations, snorkling trips, etc. Accross the street is a liquor store, mini grocery store, good Italian Restaurant and souvenir/beach clothing shop. You can rent windsurfers, kayaks and other water sports stuff at the hotel next door, all within walking distance. We went to the crowded side of the island one day and boy were we greatful to be returning to the quiet East Side of the island. Tukka is an awesome restaurant nearby and they will pick you up and drop you off if you don't have a car. We are definately going back and staying here!

Room Tip: The unit we rented on the 2nd floor from Lyle was perfect. Nobody was in the unit above us, so it w...

We live in hustling, bustling Manhattan and therefore like Caribbean Islands that are quiet, have no large hotels and those that are not destinations for cruise ships. So how’d we end up on Grand Cayman? We learned about Castaways at the beautiful, peaceful east end of the island.

Every unit has a lovely balcony facing a gorgeous white sand beach and turquoise bay. In the winter months there is usually a breeze which makes sitting in the hot sun quite comfortable. The one bedroom unit has a full kitchen, including a dishwasher. Wi-Fi is easily accessible and was mostly reliable during our stay in January 2013. The units are clean and user friendly. Lyall Watt, the rental manager, is often on-site and always available by phone if help is needed.

One must have water shoes, though, to access the sea from the beach. And for the casual snorkeler there are many fish to see right by the pier. For more exotic fish variety we used White Sand Activities on site (see Alan or Dave) and enjoyed a lovely private catamaran sail and snorkel adventure.

Although many visitors tend to rent cars for their entire stays, we were fine with only occasional rental days. The resort restaurant is good and their lunchtime “Black & Blue” fish sandwich is terrific. Service can be slow, but we accept island time as a way of life outside the Big Apple. There is a small but decent food market across the road for in-house breakfasts and lunches. The food at the Italian Kitchen Restaurant (in the same shopping center) is great, though may seem bit pricey.

We highly recommend this facility for like-minded vacationers and will certainly stay again.
