“Superb location, lovely people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

We stayed here for a week, and we couldn't have been made more welcome. Lovely breakfasts every day, lots of tips from Jeny on where there are nice places to visit and eat at. It was beautifully quiet with lovely views over the countryside to the sea in the distance, and yet we weren't very far from Chania (about 50 minutes).

It was wonderful, and a great centre for walking - there are lots of decent walks within easy reach. A great place for touring from too, we used our hire car to explore the mountains and the towns and villages around.

Highly recommended.

Kamares is the perfect destination for anyone who wants to relax in his holidays and enjoy the traditional greek hospitality. The rooms are very clean with many comforts. You can enjoy the extraordinary greek breakfast with food which are produced in the local area. Also, one of the Kamares advantages is the convenience to many Crete sightseeing. I recommend Kamares for everyone who request quality holidays. We are waiting for the next summer to visit and stay in Kamares....!!!!

Nice place to stay, beautiful renovation by the owners, retaining many original features which makes Kamares a special place to stay. Surrounding by fruit trees with amazing views and whilst in a rural, peaceful location, not too far away from the beach, eateries, shops etc but you will need a car. Our stay was made special by the hospitality of the owner and Jenny who works hard to make sure everyone is looked after, well done Jenny! No air conditioning, but fans are supplied in all rooms. If you want a peaceful location, I would highly recommend a stay here!

If you want to escarpé from the touristy hotels and want to discover and experience authentic and natural Crête and also meet its people, this is the place.
Kostas who was a blacksmith by profession, has been in a hamlet for the last 20 years restoring and converting traditional Cretan houses into functional and pretty appartments/houses, all immaculately clean.
Good points:
- situation about 30 min from Chania, in the beautiful hills between sea and mountains, magnificient views.
- breakfasts are exceptionnal, delicious, all organic, lots of choices. Jenny and Dominique pass on their detailed knowledge about Cretan life and traditions in a delightful way. They are all very generous and kind people.
-homegrown food supplied in a basket after breakfast.
- the clean swimmingpool has sun, views and adequate loungers and tables.
- each appart/house has its own outdoor shady terrasse.
Not so goods:
- Rula ( Kostas'wife) was not present during our stay.Apparently she is now rarely there. So conversation with the owners was impossible unless you speak Greek.
- we were there in a quiet week( beg of Sept) so unfortunately no evening meals or afternoon coffees,....with the hosts and guests.
- you need a car to go and eat or get some shopping as there are no shops or places to eat.
- very hard and low beds although a softer overmattress was supplied when mentionned.
-our appart( no1) is smaller( particularly the upstairs bedroom) and would be best suited to younger people.
- as our week went on, we left more confortable and happier thanks to all the team who went out of their way to insure we had a great holiday.

We stayed at the Kamares apartments at Maheri village, Crete, recently for a week. It's about a 45 minute drive from Chania airport. It was a fairly late booking and we were slightly concerned that the TripAdvisor trail had gone cold after some correspondence a few years ago. We needn't have worried. There are 5 apartments created out of some old village houses which had Venetian features. Our apartment had a balcony and views across the valley towards the sea. Very comfortable and tastefully furnished. There was a cooker and a fridge, and we breakfasted in our apartment most days. Roula and her family look after everything very well. Breakfasts outside, with lovely views, are available for an extra charge. Roula does a dinner once or twice a week depending on the available help she has, and it's a social occasion. We had a mixture of French (majority), German, Japanese, Peruvian and ourselves dining round the table. Roula loves to talk. French is her preferred foreign language but she is more than capable in English and German.
There is a lovely pool set in the hillside above the apartments, which is very peaceful. We had a couple of lazy days there, with a walk or a drive through the stunning scenery before dinner. Otherwise Maheri village, which is tiny, is a good base to explore the western end of Crete. The drive across the mountains to the south coast is Alpine in its grandeur. The big beaches are too touristy, and we felt that western Crete was a brilliant holiday for grown-ups to enjoy the village life, the scenery, history and the walks.
The food was like going back in time, in a good way, and Roula can recommend some good tavernas close by, where food is very reasonably-priced. Try the Tzitzikas in Armeni for something a bit different.
Waking up knowing that the sun was going to be shining, hearing the church bells across the olive groves and orange orchards, and driving the very quiet roads to see some spectacular scenery, are lovely memories.

Room Tip: All the apartments are nice; a couple of them have more beds.
