“Really cool and amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2014

Rented a taxi in PDC and drove 2.5 hours to Ek Balam but was well worth it. Pay the 500 pesos and get one of the local guides to walk you around. $50 for 1.5 hours may seem like a lot but without the guide you'll be clueless.

Also on your way back stop at a neaby restaurant called "Carne Concepcion" and sample their smoked meats. My wife, the taxi driver (great addiiton because he spoke English and Spanish) and I asked them for a shared sampler plate for 3 and it was plenty. The black bean soup as well as their sauces (pico, sweet onions, hot and tomato) were a great compliment to their hand made corn tacos.

Also go early to avoid the crowds at Ek Balam. We arrived at around 8:30 AM and practically had the place to ourselves. By the time we finished the crowds started to pile in at 10. As always my wife's travel planning was spot on with this one.

“Amazing day!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2014 via mobile

This is a full day trip and be prepared for a two hour bus ride out and back. That being said, it is worth every minute. Our guide was Sergio. Being an archeologist his knowledge of the ruins and the Mayan people was amazing. This team pours their heart out making sure you are well educated in the culture as well as having a great day. The added visit to a authentic Mayan village and sacred waters was an added bonus. Lunch was well done too. On my list this would be a must do. The only recommendation I could make would be to make sure the bus windows are clear so you can see out better. Our bus had condensation on one side to the point you were not able to see out.

This was a great day with a fantastic guide. The trip included a visit and swim at a cenote. Lunch was delish. Make sure you bargain for the pictures (if you want them)

“Excellent!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2014

Terrific guide...beautiful ruins.... you can walk on them and it is not crazy busy like others.
The tour involved visiting a cenote as well. We saw a Mayan ceremony and were served lunch. Wonderful!

“Best ruins in Riviera Maya”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2014

Sure the pyramids in Tulum and Coba are great but the ruins at Ek Balam are AMAZING!! We went to this place in 2011. It wasn't well known at the time and you were allowed to climb on all of the structures if you wanted to. I'm not sure if this is still allowed. It's off the beaten path but you can't miss out on this stop. I promise you won't regret it.
