Rented a taxi in PDC and drove 2.5 hours to Ek Balam but was well worth it. Pay the 500 pesos and get one of the local guides to walk you around. $50 for 1.5 hours may seem like a lot but without the guide you'll be clueless.
Also on your way back stop at a neaby restaurant called "Carne Concepcion" and sample their smoked meats. My wife, the taxi driver (great addiiton because he spoke English and Spanish) and I asked them for a shared sampler plate for 3 and it was plenty. The black bean soup as well as their sauces (pico, sweet onions, hot and tomato) were a great compliment to their hand made corn tacos.
Also go early to avoid the crowds at Ek Balam. We arrived at around 8:30 AM and practically had the place to ourselves. By the time we finished the crowds started to pile in at 10. As always my wife's travel planning was spot on with this one.
