5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

Cannot say more than has already been written about this gem of a hotel. If ever I were to own a hotel this would be a model. Excellent restoration of an old building, sympathetic to its history yet with modern elements. No comfort spared in the rooms and the warmest of welcomes. Very good breakfast.
A word on San Ascensio - let Clara and Mercedes guide you to the good bars with tasty tapas. Follow their wine recommendations. Forget the restaurant Casa Marisa which is poor value for money.
We spent 2 night in March and will return if ever in the area again. Highly recommend.

In this beautiful wine country in a tiny village you will find this place to be all you can ask for. Very luxurious and well maintained rooms run by two very helpful and caring owners. We got very good travel guidance from the owners who show genuine concern for the well being and enjoyment of their guests. All their advice was spot on and we would recommend this place to anyone who is planning on going to this beautiful part of Spain.

Lovely small hotel in old stone building - very well updated with excellent rooms and bathrooms. Owners could not be more helpful with regard to advice on places to visit, making bookings and giving directions etc. The village is small and quiet but there are several bars with tapas available as well as two restaurants open for lunch all week (I think) and for dinner Friday and Saturday. San Asensio is right in the heart of the Rioja wine region and is close to the tremendous Dinastia Vivenco museum as well as loads of Bodegas that are open to visitors. Towns of Haro, Laguardia and Logrono in easy reach, as are the monastaries of Suso and Yuso.

Room Tip: Only 8 rooms and I suspect that all are similarly excellent. Quiet on all sides.

Mercedes and Carla, the two ladies who run the hotel, are absolutely wonderful! It's a charming, authentic place with only 8 rooms. Very clean room and bathroom. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We stayed here for three nights. We chose a superior room, which was a good size and had a reasonably sized bathroom with a bath and a good shower over the bath. The room was simply but stylishly furnished with exposed original stone walls from what is a renovated former priest's house. The hotel has three floors and usefully has a lift.
There is a comfortable lounge, where drinks are available and a patio. Parking is available in the street outside the hotel. Our hosts Carla and Mercedes made us extremely welcome and nothing was too much trouble for them to ensure our stay was comfortable and our sightseeing enjoyable. A generous continental style breakfast is available.

The village of San Asensio is ideally located to easily visit the wineries, hilltop villages, monastaries and the delightful countryside of La Rioja. It also has a number of bars and if you don't feel like travelling for dinner, I can recommend eating at Casa Marisa (about a 5 minute walk from the hotel). This homely restaurant serves excellently prepared local dishes with very efficient homely service at a reasonable price. Expect to pay 18-25 Euros for three courses including wine and coffee.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a superior room

I stayed at this hotel for two nights whilst I was touring La Rioja. The building is a beautifully converted house, over 300 years old. All the renovations have been carried out expertly and sensitively and the finish is top class. Regardless of the decor, its the lovely owners- Clara and Mercedes- who made this stay extra special. Clara sat down with us and asked what we were looking to do whilst in the area. She told us which wineries would be best to visit, which towns had the best restaurants, which drives would be the prettiest. They both really seemed to genuinely care about us having a great time while we were there. They will happily call wineries or restaurants to make reservations for you and even after we left to travel on they told us to call them if we needed any help or advice. Couldn't have asked for better service!

I would say though that it isn't really a hotel, more of a guest house, not that this matters. And one funny note, you will be woken in the morning by 3 cockerels in the town. One of which sounds like he's being strangled! Never mind though, it is a fantastic hotel with lovely owners. Don't miss it if you're travelling through the area.

We stayed here for one night en route home from our annual trip to southern Spain. The owners were extremely helpful, giving us a wealth of information about the area and maps of how to get to the nearby town of Haro for an evening meal. The centre of Haro was fantastic - vibrant and with superb tapas bars which enabled us to taste a wide variety of local delicacies (we passed on the pigs' ears!) Of course the wine was superb! In contrast, the village of San Asencio is very quiet, apart from the church bell chiming ALL through the night, and what seemed to be a thousand roosters welcoming in the new day, even when it was black dark! Still, we are townies and not used to the sounds of the countryside!
The rooms are tastefully appointed and very comfortable. Breakfast was good and beautifully served. Unfortunately we had to pay for the superior room as that was all that was available - a bit expensive we thought.
