“Great service. Excellent stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

We stayed for a weekend as a party of eight and couldn't fault the quality of service we received, despite having a power cut during the first evening.

As mentioned in other reviews, some parts of the hotel are in need of a refurb, but overall it is clean, the food is fine and the atmosphere good for both food and drink. But it is the accommodating nature of the staff that shone through, we'll definitely be returning.

We stopped at the Red Lion for one night in February 2014 with our daughter and son-in-law. We were greeted by Claudia, who soon sorted out our rooms and presented a very welcoming face of the hotel. We climbed the narrow, winding staircase to our rooms and negotiated the maze of corridors typical of old buildings like this. There is hardly a flat surface in the place, but this adds to its charm.

The rooms were comfortable and quite well appointed with the usual TV, tea and coffee and toiletries provided. We had rooms 7 and 12 and room 7 would definitely benefit from a bit of a makeover. The window was cracked and there were traces of black mould on one of the walls. The bathroom was great with a bath and shower and plenty of hot water. In fairness to the hotel, I spoke to the manager and he has only been there two weeks, and has plans to smarten the rooms up. The beds were excellent and we all had a great night’s sleep.

We had a few drinks in the bar and then went into the restaurant to eat. The food and wine was excellent and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The only slight negative was the attitude of the waitress, who seemed to feel we were a bit of an inconvenience. She looked put out every time we asked for drinks or extras to be brought to the table, and as we were the last diners left made a rather noisy point of preparing the tables around us for breakfast. Minor issues perhaps, but when spending over £400 for a one night stay we felt justified in demanding high standards of service. To be fair, this aside everyone else we dealt with was very accommodating so no real complaints. Special mention again for Claudia – lovely lady from Portugal.

We had breakfast before hitting the road and while pretty standard (cereal, fruit juice, cooked breakfast etc.), it was all fresh and well presented. We all had a really great time at the Red Lion, and we would certainly stay there again. Recommended!

The hotel is a 400-year old coaching inn, but don't worry, the rooms have definitely been refurbished since then. The floors slope upstairs and each room is pretty unique, but everything is very clean and nicely decorated. Our room had an issue with the shower - there was a screw sticking out - but when we told management they were very apologetic.

We ate dinner in the pub downstairs the night that we stayed there. They serve traditional English pub fare. It was alright, but not amazing. We also had a free breakfast - that was included with our stay. It was the usual buffet, pastries, fruit, cheese, etc., but was nice.

Overall, it was a very nice stay. Natalie, who checked us in and out and served all of our meals, was fantastic and made sure that our stay was really pleasant.

We stayed for one night in a superior room. Good safe parking at rear of the pub/hotel.We were greeted by a very warm & friendly & helpful lady called Claudia- from then on during our stay nothing was too much trouble or effort. Our room was great, everything you needed was provided. It was very quiet.
Dinner was lovely, we were served by Claudia & another equally happy & warm lady called Julie. Breakfast the following morning was very nice... plenty of choice & variety, no one needs to be hungry!
We felt at home & comfortable at all times.
We went mid week so I guess it would be busier at holiday times & weekends. We did book our table for dinner as they said they can get busy.
We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay. A good & well run place, with the added extra of great staff & very good food.
We will return at a later date for sure.

Room Tip: We were in room 3 nearer the back of the hotel, I guess rooms nearer the road might be a bit noisier...

After a couple of negative visits about a year ago, we decide to give this hotel another try!! We are really glad we did, the greeting on arrival was most warm, friendly and welcoming, nothing was to much trouble, from checking our needs, reserving a table we chose in restaurant for our evening meals, and generally making sure that everything was to our satisfaction! The en-suite room was up to good standard, comfortable beds, clean interior, well furnished, and a spotless toilet and bathroom. The menu, both in variety, quality and price was excellent, service was quick, friendly and attentive, the team, led by Daniel, and Natalie on reception, has only made us certain to visit this hotel/inn again. Top marks to all at Red Lion, well done!

This is a great location , small villege not far from Bambury, the hotel is very old but that's the charm of the place the room was very nice the reataurant was very good lovely waitresses nothing was to much trouble. One problem our room was just above the front door it was a very windly weekend (3rd January 2014) and every time someone came in the door banged, think they could do with something on the door to stop that. We had stayed there before about two years ago and our room was over the other side so no noise. Still we will try again.

Room Tip: Try and get a room away from the pub/restaurant if the weather is bad
