“Needs to improve the quality but lovely location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2012

Stopped for lunch on a recent warm and sunny March afternoon. Plenty of seating outside from which to enjoy the view over the village. Friendly landlord and quite a large menu. We opted for the special two for £9.95 menu and wished we had not as soon as it arrived, first the condiments, napkins and even the cutlery are dumped on the table in a small picnic basket, looks a good idea until you spot a dirty used napkin amongst them and the cutlery is not even wrapped in a clean one so just scrabble around the bottom to find a pair. The food arrived very quickly which always sends alarms bells and it was clear to see that the dry warmed up chicken breast and very, very soft potatoes had been warmed up. smeared with a bit of sauce and a small handful of bagged lettuce dumped on the side, my ham egg and chips were dreadful, large chips totally sodden with fat, wet ham, dry peas , the eggs were the only slightly redeeming feature as were at least freshly cooked, thankfully hard to have preprepared fried eggs!! It may appear good value but really its not if its blooming awful is it. Real shame as has great potential. There are many pubs offering this kind of deal, it does not have to be this bad. Could not tell if the main menu would be prepared any better but I very much doubt it, how hard is it to at least provide good chips?

We recently spent 2 nights in this hotel. Generally, we were very happy. The staff were friendly and efficient. It is a chain hotel, so the food was of the type usually found in a chain, but it was perfectly OK. Our only criticism being that the main courses were far too much for us, so there was a lot of waste. There was a good wine list, but unfortunately, they were out of the one we ordered the first night, and when we later ordered 2 Grand Marniers, they only had enough left for one. Just a bit more attention to detail needed in the drinks department.

We stayed in the feature room, number 16, on the ground floor. It is a nice large room with a sofa, and tea/coffee making facilities. However, the mattress is terrible!! It needs to be replaced very soon.

This is typical of many of the Greene King old English hotels, good value, reliable food, a clean hotel and in this case good service.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2012

We had the pleasure of staying at The Red Lion for two nights during half term. We fancied a place with a bit of history and character and we were definately not disappointed. The building is very quirky with low beams, narrow corridors, fireplaces and twisty staircases - not suitable for everyone but perfect us, especially the two youngsters in our party who are only used to staying at Hiltons.
I stayed in room 3 which was a lovely size and included an en suite and a two seater sofa. The room was spotless and well decorated and there was an ample supply of coffee, tea, hot chocolate and biscuits.
Breakfast exceeded expectations with a great selection of fresh fruits, cereals, pastries and cooked items. The smoked salmon was as good as I have ever tasted.
What made our stay really special was the fantastic service that we had from all the staff - and I mean all. They are a credit to their company and I hope they are as appreciated by those in head office as they are by us. Well done and thank you for a memorable stay.

Room Tip: Rooms 3 and 7 face the rear and we found them very quiet at night.

I stayed here as a buisness traveler for nearly 3 months! I have stayed in all 13 rooms! The rooms are to a good standard (avoid room 10 and ask for 7 or 16). The food is always very good and the breakfast is outstanding! The full team here are a real asset tochained English inns chain! I enjoyed my stays here so much I bought my wife, son and two dogs!

See you all again soon!

Room Tip: Ask for room 16!!

Having read some of the earlier reviews regarding the Rooms on offer, I decided to book direct with the Hotel and was allocated Room 3 on the first-floor. This was a spacious and quiet twin-bedded room and much better than what I was expecting. We arrived mid-afternoon in pouring rain and given a nice welcome by Monique (one of the Managers) who although obviously busy, quite rightly took the time to greet us as one would expect. Food was excellent (particularly the cooked breakfast) and served by friendly staff. Dinner was enhanced by the arrival of local carol singers who performed admirably despite some diners showing lack of respect with the volume of their conversation.
A most pleasant stay.

Room Tip: If in any doubt, book direct with the Management to ensure your requirements are met.

Great mid week stay - lovely food and lovely cotswold pub - staff extremely friendly and highly recommended.

The bed in the ground floor room - i think 16 or 6 was rather lumpy!
