“Great stay and excellent value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2009

Big, clean rooms, with lovely extra touches and much more luxurious than expected for a 3 star Inn. The menu was very good and offered either restaurant or pub style food in pleasant surroundings. The staff were lovely made me feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. This place has tonnes of character and the owners and staff work very hard to make residents and non-residents enjoy their time.

(I honestly have no idea how the previous reviewer could have such a different experiance as other people staying at the hotel at the same time as us were equally delighted.)

On arriving at The Swan, the hotel had the look of a small motel. Only 6 rooms and parking spaces directly outside the door. The car park ramp is extremely steep as it meets the main road, so if you have a low profile car chances are you'll scrape the front as you leave the car park! (as I did every day)
I was horrified to see a level crossing right next to the pub, but during a 3 night stay, we never heard 1 train (it may be a disused line?).
The locks on several rooms looked like they may have been forced in the past, and i then noticed CCTV cameras trained on the rooms, so i don't know if there is a history of break ins?
Then we opened the door!
On the positive side, the rooms are large and with complimentary mineral water.
On the negative - the room was cold and extremely damp, and because of this it smelled damp! I was annoyed because the hotel staff knew this because there were air fresheners strategically positioned within the room but they were ineffective. When we went out at night, you would find that your clothes would smell of damp!!
The rooms need renovating in my opinion also. The bedding was new and modern, but everything else looked about 20 yrs old. The bathroom was carpeted with no radiator which probably explains the damp. The TV was old with BBC1 thru to C4, no freeview/sky.
Being as there are only 6 rooms, there is not much scope for a change of room!

We met a couple who were staying in one of the other rooms and there room was warm, with no problems with damp. They were very happy and it was a nice room, therefore thats why I gave this review the title of avoid room 6. And that is precisely what we were told by the staff on checking out. We made our final complaints about our stay and mentioned that its a shame because we had a great time in Northumberland and the food at the Pub was very nice, to which we were told if we came again, make sure you ask not to be put in room 6!! (She then took my card a charged full price without a hint of an apology or discount)!
