“Less of a hostel and more of a guest house.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013 via mobile

Due to a wedding being down the road and this being staggering distance we booked in.

It was a good find and we may come back for some walking. The place was very clean and modern. It felt homely as everyone was so friendly.

They were even very thoughtful offering us a lift to pick up a car. Nice touches like having two pillows and at breakfast lurpak butter and fresh farm eggs make it special.

We stayed in the room by the kitchen and it is probably not best if you want a lie in. I could hear every word of a visiting American as he ate breakfast and we lay in bed. Being heavily intoxicated from the wedding it did not really impact my sleep.

Great find. We will probably be back!

Paula is a fine hostess and her bunkhouse on a working farm is very clean and modern. The rooms are large and much nicer than your normal bunkhouse or hostel and includes use of the kitchen. A light breakfast was included and was very good. There is a very comfortable common area with a cozy wood-burning stove for those chilly evenings and TV and free internet for a little relaxation.

This is listed as a modern farm hostel and it really is; from the cozy living room with fireplace to the modern bedroom. Bathroom facilities are shared but there is plenty of room and privacy so it did not feel like we were sharing with others. There are plenty of places to eat within walking distance of the hostel.

We stayed here on the first night of a charity cycle ride and it could not have been better - the proprietress was incredibly friendly and welcoming - remarkable considering she had to deal with 4 shattered bodies in ridiculous lycra - the kitchen and communal area were spotless and really well equipped, she provided us with an incredible breakfast and went to lots of trouble to ensure we had everything we needed and even let us help her feed the lambs in the morning!

Beds were very comfortable and the rooms spotless. Not a single complaint to make, would very happily go back any time.

We booked at the last minute and were afforded a lovely, spacious room with a private en suite. We arrived shortly before 8 PM, and were met by our host. Paula gave us a tour and showed us to our room. She recommended The Swan, a near-by pub, for our dinner (that review is coming up next). Afterwards, we returned to the farm and found that the fire had been lit in the lounge. We slept well, and took off for a day of sightseeing, following Paula's suggestions.

All in all, a wonderful weekend. I can't wait to come back.

Room Tip: All the rooms are excellent, though ours had an en suite and could accommodate up to 6 guests.

7 of us stayed here on our first night walking along Hadrians Wall. Paula was very accommodating even though this was a working farm and it was the lambing season. Good breakfast, tv room with log burner fire, clean rooms.

This is a great place to arrive at the end of a long day's walking. I got a warm welcome and was very impressed with the quality and comfort of the accommodation and the public spaces at the hostel. Having had a disappointing expereience at the previous hostel on this trip, Houghton North Farm restored my faith! After a good night's sleep, there was a great breakfast in the kitchen where the hostel owner chatted to everyone and provided an excellent buffet breakfast with fruit, yoghurt, eggs, cheeses etc which made a nice healthy contrast to some of the large "fry-ups" I had enjoyed at earlier stops.
