“Superb camping and caravan site”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

Stayed here for one night in May 2013 whilst visiting my cousin, the Roman Wall and doing some walking in the area. The site was well sign posted and easy to get to. The Wardens have now left and the site is at present managed Graham the owner, who was extremely friendly and helpful.
The views from the site are fantastic and it is set in a lovely, peaceful location. The washing up area was very clean, with an excellent laundry too. The toilet block was extremely clean, warm with plenty of room and the showers were very good. They work on a push button every 30 seconds. The radio playing through wall speakers in the shower / toilet block was a really nice touch. As was the pond and lovely ducks. The site also had a small cafe and shop. The facilities overall were very good. I could not criticise anything on this site. The EHU is 16 amp. This is a fantastic base to visit all tourist attractions or just to enjoy one of the many walks that surround the site. Overall a superb site and we look forward to returning to this site very soon.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

Stayed here in early April 2013 and to be totally honest, based on several previous reviews, we weren't really sure what to expect.
The site is well sign-posted and easy to find from 'Roman Road' and certainly no mega-steep hills as one particular reviewer stated! Received a very warm welcome from female warden who really couldn't do enough for us. The onsite wash rooms and toilet facilities are spotlessly clean (and even play soft music). There are three large sinks (with covered roof) for washing dishes, etc. Again, these are very clean and tidy. We pitched two tents (was spending time with family exploring nearby Hadrian's Wall) on grassed area near to entrance. Plenty of room for kids to run around and explore (chickens and very friendly ducks that paid us several visits during our stay).
We met Graham, the site owner, on our last day and he really is a charming man (full of local knowledge and advise which he is more than happy to share).
All-in-all, a great short break only dampened by the weather which, sadly, if something no-one is able to control.
We really can't find any foundation for previous negative reviews and now wonder if there is a bit of sabotage here from an 'alternative' nearby site!
We look forward to another camping weekend during the summer month.

We camped here a couple of nights ago with my 5 year old daughter. The site was quiet so we could pitch anywhere and found a lovely spot with fantastic views. We had electric hook up and had no problems running everything we needed to keep warm and comfortable. My Daughter loved seeing the Lambs and the ducks.

The facilities were spot on, lovely warm showers, clean toilets and radio playing in the changing rooms. There's a brilliant drying room with washing facilities. The wardens were really helpful, Pat even visited with a takeaway menu who deliver to the site. We didn't use the cafe or shop but the prices seemed reasonable and the shop stocked basic necessities. Graham came to say hello and we found him to be really helpful and friendly.

We will definitely be returning, fingers crossed for better weather.

Irene and Vivelaginge have pretty much summed it up. The site is nice but the warden (only one of them, the other was nice) was very rude and unhelpful. He stood outside the toilet block chain smoking at 8am and when we asked about the possibility of getting some breakfast he replied "I don't start 'til 8.30" He was also extremely rude to the point of being aggressive to a member of our party who was asking about using the camping barn rather than the tent place we had booked. In addition to this one of our party had booked and paid but they had no record of this and we all got charged different amounts for our nights accommodation - varying from £7 pp to £14pp in the same sized tent?
There are so many lovely places along the wall.....Don't stay here!

A group of 35 of us stayed here on July 7th 2012. I had booked this well in advance and explained what we were doing. Hadrians Wall Path in 3.5 days for a small charity. I was advised there would be a good area at the front for us and we would be able to park our 3 vehicles on the hardstanding by the shop.
In the event we did not have the whole area to ourselves, and the cars (5 now) were parked up the hill. There was a lot of toing and froing to collect our walkers from a specified point. The following morning the support team got up and cooked breakfast for the group for 7am and they set off at 8am or soon after again involving a lot of toing and froing to deliver the walkers to day 3 start.
A couple of the walkers had told me the warden had "had had a go at them" as the mens showers were in a state and someone had dried their boots in a tumble drier. They had offered to clear any mess. The warden then had a go at me and I did in fact wipe out all the sinks and tops in the mens and womens blocks. I also swept the floors. In the laundry area I cleaned the drier out and swept the floor when all our walkers had gone. I found little mess for 30 people with soggy muddy boots. The area was also a boot drying room so I think some mess must be expected. In additon any heating to dry the boots out was switched off overnight so the boots were still wet the next day.
Not content with this the warden and owner then proceeded to have another go at the support team who were trying to take down the tents and clear the pitch. They denied any agreement we would have the whole front area and proceeded to tell the men they were disorganised and they could have put up 200 tents on the area (we had 23 and were packed like sardines). In addition we were noisy to midnight and early in the morning. The men apologised for the tumble drier and said yes they were amateurs.
Points here are any group of 35 people will be noisy to an extent. They were given a lot of warning about size of group.
The group completed their challenge in the specified time which by anyones book is an amazing feat and yes I am the mother of the young woman who died just 2 years ago without warning, at 32 weeks of pregnancy. Also in the group were my husband, her husband, sister and brother in law, along with extended family and friends.
The poor attitude here was in stark contrast to how we were greeted at our other 2 campsites along the way (Belvedere and Roman Wall Lodges) and it began at the start of our stay when one of the team went in the shop for a cup of tea and was rudely treated. Not to be reccommended.

Just spent 3 nights camping at Hadrians wall campsite. Hosts very welcoming. Terrible weather but they looked after their guests. Facilities great, well laid at and clean. Short walk to the wall. Thank you well recommended!
