really confused regards review by "joyce" as this certainly did not seem to be the same establishment myself and freinds enjoyed. We found the landlord dennis charming, though a little eccentric, whilst his partner jackie was wonderful and obliging and more than willing to provide breakfast at the earliest of hours e.g 5am.
Would certainly recomend a stay of any duration!

We recently decended on the Old Ship Newbiggin as a quick getaway, and to be honest we wished we hadnt bothered! Jackie & Dennis have about as much business acumen as my little finger. Despite what the website says, the pub does NOT offer any food except for 2 and a half hours on a Sunday. The water was constantly cold when we tried to shower, the TV didnt work either. The member of staff behind the bar that went by the name of Kirsty was unwelcoming and incredibly rude!
The actual pub is fantastic and I believe if someone with an ounce of common sense was to take over this pub, it would be a little goldmine! The pub boats a restaurant and huge bar area, but neither of these rooms are open, we were informed by the locals that they are used to store the landlords OCD for collecting junk!
Avoid this place like the plague! - for places to stay check out the B N B just up the road!

Room Tip: Avoid this pub!

Great place for Sunday lunch and for entertainment during the week. Book up for the Triathlon in 2012 and of course the music festival next August. You will get a great welcome as a day visitor or if your staying over.

We stayed for two nights in a family room which was spacious and comfortable, welcoming and friendly hosts, good breakfast fantastic location. The pub is clearly being refurbished and some rooms under decoration but our room was recently completed and was pleasant with everything we needed. Not ensuite with a shared bathroom which might put some off but no one else on our floor so not a problem for our stay. we have paid more elsewhere and have had less good rooms, we would definately stay again.

We loved staying at The Old Ship. Jackie and Dennis were very welcoming. We had two double rooms with lovely views and the beds were so comfortable. The shower was fantastic, hot and very powerful. There was no strict time over breakfast and we only wished we could have stayed for Sunday dinner. The locals also made us feel very welcome and enjoyed a hilarious
evening with them singing and playing guitars, ukeleles and the spoons!! Our teenager girls were fascinated!! We wouldn't hesitate about returning.

If we were giving a rating for the people who work in The Old Ship Inn we would give five stars, as the landlady Jackie and her staff were warm and welcoming, and this made up for the shortcomings in the accommodation. However some small changes could make a big difference: putting a mirror in the bathroom and providing some little toilettries, making sure the towels smell fresher (ours smelt like they'd been stored in a cupboard full of smoked kippers), tuning the remote into the TV so you can find the channels you want (also couldn't find any digital ones), and making sure the shower has hot water (though when we finally complained we were offered the use of another one immediately). A more costly change would be investing in a new mattress. We stayed in the Elizabeth Swan Suite and found the mattress too soft and left with backache, but that may just be personal preference. We did have a sea view, not the most inspiring of sea views, though that is beyond the control of the owners, and it was lovely to hear the sea lapping as it was so close. They don't do evening meals, but happily encourage you to bring in a takeaway and provide plates and cutlery in the bar (Newbiggins-by-the-sea is not a place to dine out!). Jackie couldn't have been more accommodating and played our CD so we could have a salsa dance in the bar when it was quiet later on. She kindly also lent us a map, which proved invaluable. We enjoyed the company of the locals (including Largo the dog, who comes in every night with his owner, but prefers the beer in the pub next door!), who were very friendly and gave us very helpful tips on where to go and what to do. The breakfast was a standard English breakfast, but vegetarians beware - make sure you make this known. I asked for scrambled eggs, otherwise I suspect the traditional eggs, bacon and sauage would have automatically arrived as no-one showed any sign of checking any preference. It was freshly cooked and generous in portion and no problem once requested. The pub does a Sunday lunch, which we were offered at no extra cost instead of breakfast, but we were keen to explore further afield and so could not take up this generous offer. We feel Jackie is making a valient attempt to create a warm and genuine place to stay, which is why we didn't have the heart to complain about anything (except the cold shower!). We feel The Old Ship Inn is maybe in need of some TLC and is perhaps not the most professionally run of places, but maybe that is it's charm. And it was reasonably priced.

We arrived by bike at The Old Ship and immediately had a terrific welcome from the owner herself. We were able to store the bikes safely then went up to our room. The room was very comfortable and had a fantastic view out to sea. There was a friendly atmosphere in the pub in the evening. The breakfast was excellent and cooked to order.
