I was given the half day experience for my birthday and I loved every second of it.
The morning started with tea and biscuits while we put on our camouflage overalls and face paint. We were entertained by Nick who told us lots of funny anecdotes while we waited for everyone to arrive. The first activity was a talk by Andy in the armoury. I've never been interested in weapons before but Andy was so knowledgeable and engaging that I could have listened to him all day. I think he may be ex SAS but I thought I'd better not ask in case he had to kill me!
Then it was time for the driving. The first vehicle was a super cat which was brilliant fun. I had a grin on my face the whole way round. Then it was the 432 armoured personnel carrier which I loved because it was so easy to drive. Finally we drove a Russian tank which was an amazing experience as it's incredibly exciting to steer such a huge monster of a machine.
All the instructors were professional, attentive and patient. There was very little waiting around because there were 2 or 3 vehicles in use at the same time, and only 9 drivers. Spectators were able to sit on the Russian tank while it was being driven if they wanted to. There was always someone around to help people onto the vehicles with a ladder. And once again, Nick was on hand to entertain with his stories.
We were scored out of 10 for each vehicle and the overall winner got to crush a car using a Chieftan tank. That was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen!
The whole experience was brilliant - far better than any other "experience day" I've been on. Now I want to go back and do their Full Monty day. Believe me, it's well worth the money.
