I visited the Old Ram last year for an early Christmas meal with my family. The pre-booked Christmas menu sounded fantastic and having previously visited the pub on two separate occasions, we were looking forward to our meal. Upon arrival the restaurant was almost empty, never a good sign! (Especially so close to Christmas!)
Our starters were fine, but as our main courses were served our hearts sunk. Our 'turkey with all the trimmings' was no more than a couple of slices of cheap turkey roll, three pallid roast potatoes and a solitary cheap-tasting 'pig in blanket' served with barely cooked parsnip and deep khaki coloured sprouts, which were rock hard! It was completely out of keeping with the 'olde worlde' aesthetic of the pub and more in line with something usually served in a supermarket cafe!
The Christmas puddings were similarly disappointing, the portion was the smallest we had ever encountered and as the dinner wasn't large, we were still hungry!
We were all saddened that my father's family Christmas treat, was no more than a glorified frozen dinner. It's such a shame as clearly the pub has a lot of history (dating back to the 17th century) and if it continues this way, it will end up as yet another boarded up relic.
