“Beautiful accomodation friendly service value for money!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

My husband and I enjoyed our visit to this hotel and will recommend it to friends and family. We enjoyed a lovely meal in the resturant which is not overpriced as some other reviews would suggest. Locals were friendly and Aron the manager sat with us to chat for a while after his shift finished. Nothing is to much trouble for any of the staff. The bedroom we stayed in was very clean, lovely wooden floorboards and decorated beautifuly, the bed was really big and comfy. Our room faced the car park therefore closest to the road however it was really quiet so no bother at all. We were given a little gift of bread when we left which was a nice personal touch. Thank you to Aron and his team for making our stay an enjoyable one.

The team at The Grove Inn foster a warm and friendly atmosphere resulting in a very relaxing break. Perfect for local walks and fishing, local produce is a feature. The menu is tasty and interesting, and if you want some culture, Canterbury is a short drive away. And goats in the pen in the garden are very well behaved!

We booked the Grove Pantry for our wedding anniversary. On arrival the place looks great, goats in the garden, right on the river, a smoke house, big sofas and warm fires. We were surprised to be asked to pay for the rooms upfront but did so.

We were shown to our room which was okay, it had balcony doors and a view of the canal. No wardrobe just hooks but as it was only a couple of nights that was fine. No decaf coffee, herbal teas or hot chocolate in the room which you would expect for £80 per night – just coffee and tea. We noticed we could hear the bar downstairs but figured it would quieten down at closing time so wouldn't be a problem.

The room wasn't as clean as we would have expected - there were hairs on the sink and in the shower. The shower was also clearly quite old with a large lime scale stain down the wall. There was not enough hot water for two showers.

We had dinner in the pub which was generally disappointing as we were expecting something special it was just standard pub grub. My chicken came with cabbage that so was spicy even my husband couldn't eat it.

As expected the noise from the bar was gone not long after 11pm. However at 1.15am I was awoken by voices in the bar below, assuming the staff were clearing up I tried to get back to sleep. This was more difficult when they decided to put on load music, at 1.30am. After 15minutes of this my husband went downstairs to ask them to turn it off, which they did, however we were kept awake until 3am with their chatting and banging.

When we went downstairs for breakfast we were asked whether we wanted coffee, my request for a decaf was met with a response that they didn't have any (even though I had had some after dinner the night before). The breakfast selection was very poor - coco pops or muesli and the offer of an English breakfast which was standard quality.

At this point we had decided to not stay the second night and when we asked for our money back and said why we were met with a cursory 'sorry about that' (which was repeated when I handed in the keys). The owner did not seem surprised or concerned that her paying guests had been kept awake by her staff. No attempt was made to explain or even try to convince us to stay.

I would not recommend this pub. It is very expensive for the quality and as the title of this review suggests it looks good at first glance but the quality does not match the appearance.

Room Tip: We had the room above the bar, given the staffs disregard for guests I would recommend that you don...

My wife and I stayed the night at the Grove Ferry Inn,we arrived at 3-00pm and were very warmly greeted by the owner Aron. We had coffee and chatted about the locally sourced and foraged food and the beautiful river and scenery surrounding the hotel.
The room was beautiful with a 4 poster and balcony overlooking the River Stow. The menu reflected the seasonal availability of local produce. Lovely cooked food and real sized portions. Good nights sleep and a fantastic breakfast, bought some chilly jam, lemon drizzle cake and smoked camembert all made by the Grove.
The room was very reasonably priced as was the meal, we are looking to return as soon as possible.

Stayed one night, at first seemed a very nice place but after half an hour in the place you start to see everything that's wrong with it, nice pleasing to the eye features and touches covered in cobwebs and dust! Every window in the place you look through make the outside world look foggy! The dado rail in the room has an inch of dust on it, not one thing in the room was cleaned properly! If you remember the old c4 program Brookside, sinbad the window cleaner got his name from always missing the corners making windows he cleaned look like ships windows.... Round!!! I think he must work here now! Toilets that take 10 flushes to half clear!! Toilet brush caked in remnants of its last use, shower with more lime scale than my old kettle, creaky floor boards, creaky bed, a patio door with a through draught and a coffee machine you need a bachelor or science to operate (why? a simple kettle is quite adequate) dirty coffee cup, stained tea spoon and a poor selection of coffee in the room. If you rise early and sleep in the rear of the building the train will be your alarm clock!!!
7:30am I don't think is an unreasonable time to want breakfast, was told it was too early and the chef would prepare a continental style breakfast and it would be left outside my door ready for morning, it was paid for but I DID NOT receive it!! Most annoyed as I was straight off to work!! On arrival I got a very expensive pint of larger from the bar which I paid for in cash then the same drink was added to my dinner bill making 1 pint of larger £8.00 !!! The landlords tone soon changed when I questions the bill!! I did get a refund of the £4 over charge though, i think this is why i didnt revieve breakfast even though it was paid for!! all in all I've had far better nights in far cheaper places, very disappointed to say the least.

Wayne, firstly thank you for taking the time to review here, but also respond to my direct message.

I agree with you on a number of points in your review & have implemented the following;

- 9.00am is not a suitable time for us to serve breakfast. As such, we have listened & we will accommodate our customers schedules & arrangements. Everyone should be entitled to a great breakfast to start the day

- I agree that the cleanliness of the pub was not up to our standard. Whilst we will always struggle to dissuade the spiders on every count, we will certainly give them a run for their money now! After a very long Monday, through monday night into Tuesday with Anthony, Jason, Aron, James, Matt, Vikki, Tim & Myself I can say, the pub has never looked cleaner

- The toilet in the room you were in has been fixed

- The coffee machine is fab, we are putting them in all rooms as we believe that they make great coffee & why would you want instant when you can have crafted taste? However, instructions are on the way to help everyone understand it, we didn't appreciate it was that difficult to use

- The limescale will always be an issue for us. We are in an incredibly hard water area, but we have now put a descale plan into effect & we routinely reduce the impact of the scale. It does not take away from the fact that the daisy head showers are great, but appreciate your point

In response to the other points;

The confusion with the bill was simply a need to investigate what had gone wrong.

The price of your pint is competitive in the market, it wasn't £4.00 but £3.90 which does make a huge difference & considering that beer duty to pubs has risen by 40% since 2008 with the ridiculous beer duty escalator implemented by the previous government & kept by this one, who have only seen the revenue increase by 14% in real terms & adding 20% TAX onto the price, there is precious little for an independent business like my to take from the sale. If you need someone to complain to, join our petition by searching 'save your pint' & help us stop the ridiculous burdens the government is imposing on us, both you the consumer & I the publican.

I hope the above demonstrates we do listen, we do care & we are working everyday to make our pub amazing.

Visited the Grove for a special occasion recently and was truly bowled over by the team, the pub, the food & the decor.

We started with Mulled WIne at the bar and then checked out our Room which was gorgeous. Would also have to add great double bed and Balcony overlooking the River and extra bonus, and the shower & bath were good for getting ready for our night dining at the pub.

The team when we came down, were very attentive and the drink, other clientèle and overall atmosphere very hospitable and the cheerful.

The live band added to the atmosphere but were not intrusive to our romantic night. Food was fab and after a delicious couple of steaks we had our cheese & port at the bar which ended a great meal.

In the morning we had a great cooked to order cooked breakfast - and would have loved to have taken advantage of the beautiful surrounding walks - may be next time we visit.

Overall a Great Team, Great ambience, Great Decor would thoroughly recommendatory.

Thanks to Aron the Landlord his Wife and all the team

We stayed here as part of our anniversary en route to another hotel for the next day. Our requirements were quite low, we just wanted somewhere we could relax after a day shopping in Canterbury with a few drinks in a nice country pub and a decent meal and good nights sleep. However, there were so many small things wrong with the place that it was a rather unhappy stay.

The welcome on arrival was one of indifference really from staff rather than the friendly welcome you would expect. The rooms were nice and spacious however the décor was a bit muddled. You could see what they were going for but it was as if they ran out of money half way and just dumped some random objects in the room, with what was like two dentist chairs in the corner. The tv had no remote, apparently they were getting stolen (!!!!) so were all removed!

The bathroom though was in a terrible state and hadn't been cleaned for a while. Skidmarks in the toilet and half used shampoo bottles in the shower basin as well as general dirtiness.

The bar area looked nice on arrival but lacked atmosphere and we pretty much sat on our own in our coats as it was so cold. The restaurant area at the back had more atmosphere but was again cold and we asked to move seat as near the windows were very cold.

I had the soup which was just like dirty water, fortunately when I showed this to the waitress she was equally as disappointed and we didn't have to pay for our the starters. The main was nice and the cheeseboard really good quality.

The worst part of the stay was the noise throughout the night and early morning. We were both constantly woken up and had a terrible night sleep. The walls must just be too thin and even when we went to bed the night before we had to leave the tv on as the noise from a pretty much empty bar was keeping us awake!

For half the price then all of the above would have been acceptable but paying the amount we did then it was a big disappointment!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to our homely little slice of Kent. The Grove Pantry Pub is an old Georgian manner sitting on The Great River Stour in the middle of the Stodmarsh Nature Reserve. The Georgian manner is now our very own pantry pub with pigs, goats, chickens, pheasants and quails all in our gardens and helping us to be proper country folk. Our menu is brought to you by our very own forager chef who trawls the countryside each season to bring you fresh ingredients. If our chickens are up to it the eggs on your full English will be freshly laid and collected that morning and if you cant quite polish the breakfast of don't worry Lily and Pickle our pigs will eat the left overs except for the bacon naturally. If you are naughty during your stay the team might rope you in to helping pick the fresh veg, herbs and fruit from our garden or feel free to volunteer and you might get a free slice of cake. But don't forget there is loads to be seeing and doing in the local area including boat trips chartered from the pub and pleasant walks around the nature reserve that boasts some very rare birds and beautiful panoramic views of the marsh and river. Don't expect a glitzy spanking hotel but expect loads of character, lovely old rooms with all the facilities you need to spend a weekend in the country with the added benefit of a short hop to the beach or Canterbury itself. The pub has its very own pantry area where you can pick and choose items made by the team, we have open fires and stoves, plenty of comfy chairs, a menu to make your mouth water, ales racked up on the bar and some scrumptious wines. The rooms are big and airy in that typical Georgian fashion, each is individually styled and has its own bathroom. All rooms have large sash windows overlooking either the river or across our front garden into the nature reserve. oooh! ... more   less
