“Dont ask for scrambled eggs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

I am not sure the owners have agreed between themselves whether they want to operate a B&B. One is enthusiastic and one possibly resents anyone staying in the house. So, with this conflict, why they have anybody staying in their charming but quirky house is a mystery.

The house is hard to find but is so close to the A2 that tranquillity is not part of their menu, should you want a quite walk in the country. I have seen the promotional photo of the house and cannot recognise it from the place we stayed in.

You get what they want you to have. Never put your cup on any surface that does not have a coaster, and accept that covers for sugar from the 1950's are mandatory. For breakfast you get one sausage, one sliced mushroom, one slice of bacon, a microwaved tomato, and a fried egg. There is no choice except they do not do black pudding and never do baked beans.

We had a ball and loved the stay. The bedrooms and the ambience were great. Just not what we expected. Oh, never ask for scrambled eggs!

Room Tip: The rooms are round and massive. Any one will please.

We found this fantastic B&B on a link from the Canterbury Tourist Information website.
The building is a 150 year-old converted oast house, once used for the drying of hops for the brewery trade. Information on its old life is displayed all around the house together with other interesting books and pictures.
The conversion is well done and our room had a real homely feel about it.
John and Joan Hill who own the house, are not your average B&B owners. You really do feel as if you are staying the night with distant relatives/friends of friends. They are both as English as their house, and they made us feel both welcome and relaxed.
On their recommendation we had a truly excellent dinner at the Red Lion in the nearby village of Bridge.
Everyone sprints through Kent either to or from the Channel crossings. Take a breather and stay here. The historic city of Canterbury is 5 minutes drive away.
