We visited Torcello to see the mosaic in the church. As we passed the small front gate of this restaurant, a very charming mature man explained the menu to us in broken English. Looking along the path we were impressed by the view of the restaurant within a well kept garden with linen tented sofas on the lawn. On our way back we decided to give it a go and sat in the covered garden terrace. The cutlery, linen, and china were excellent quality and the very attentive but not obtrusive staff were consummate professionals. Arriving promptly when you turned to find them. The atmosphere was self assured but relaxed and the toilet facilities, important to a weary traveller were immaculate, clean and modern. I commenced with very fresh fried mussels and clams in a superbly flavoured wine based broth. A very hearty portion which is unusual in Venice. My wife ordered the carpaccio which was also very generous in size with a garnish of top quality fresh parmisan, rocket and a drizzle of olive oil. Bread, oil and vinegar were brought automatically, a once automatic action in Venice which has become less common. We both had the carbonara for our main course and when it arrived, not only was it cooked well, it was beautifully presented and the ingredients balanced. We did not have wine, but we drank beer, water and coffee. The bill was much less than expected and we left a generous tip for our waiter. He was happy to take the time to discuss what we wanted and
ensured the table was correctly set and the dishes and glasses were removed promptly between courses. I dropped a knife at one point, the waiter observing this replaced it immediately. Its not like that in a lot of the more up market Venitian restaurants and some waiters can be haughty. Here we were treated like VIPs. Having had some average and quite repetitive meals on our trip we were very impressed by the quality and charm of the place. We will go back to Torcello, probably just to eat here. I hope it stays just the way it is.
