“Not the Cowrie Grill I Know!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014 via mobile

The Cowrie Grill at Manila Hotel was an old favorite for special celebrations. But with new hotels and new restaurants cropping up it was sort of forgotten. So we were delighted to hear that it has a new home in Greenhills. Unfortunately it is no way near the standards of the old Cowrie Grill. Bread was dry and barely warm (had to ask for new hot ones), cutlery not properly set (unless it's the new way), steak while flavorful was not cooked according to the way I wanted it - medium (had it replaced). The Cesar salad was good though. We decided to skip dessert and just try our luck at the other outlets in Promenade.

The toilet had not been attended to for some time. Toilet paper was out, the trash can was full to the brim and with some used paper napkins left on a table inside the toilet. Quite disappointing.

“Not worth it”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2014

We were hoping for a treat for the New Year, so we thought we should try this restaurant. We naturally went for the steaks. For starters we had the escargot, which was good; and the caesar salad made at the table side, unfortunately the lettuce was a bit watery like it wasn't drained properly and the portion was really small. For main course, I had the tenderloin steak which was only slightly bigger than an oreo cookie (?) with a siding of a very mini baked potato, it looked pathetic. My husband had a US roast angus prime rib beef; first of all it usually is carved out of a roast so the sides should be this pinkish meat (he ordered medium rare), but it looked like it was pan fried and it was a really thin slice (priced at 1,800php). We didn't want to spoil the mood by complaining, we were with another couple, so we just let it slide. We are not new to steakhouses, we tried many during our travels, so it was devastatingly disappointing knowing the Cowrie Grill is almost an institution in the culinary scene in Manila and being the flagship outlet of the Manila Hotel. As if we were looking for redemption we ordered two desserts: mango jubilee & crepe suzette. According to my friend, the mango jubilee was just ok, the crepe suzette on the other hand had no orange flavour nor Grand Marnier, it was just crepe with the sweetness of the syrup. I don't really know how they will survive and have regular clientele with this low standard food. It really won't matter to me since we will never try it again.

“Over-rated steak, staff lacking in training”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

We were drawn by the sparkling elegant restaurant decor and tried their prime rib and mango flambe on date night. As much as we wanted to like the food, the steak was lacking in juiciness and a bit tough to chew. The flambe, which was cooked tableside, started as a comedy errors when it took 3 waiters to turn on the stove. Eventhough we were only two set of customers at that time and were seated near the bar, service didn't come on raised hands and needed to call "Waiter" out loud. Maybe because the restaurant was new on our first visit, but we will definitely put off coming back and giving it a second try for at least a year.
