After years of going to Balai, Laiya I was surprised that they have moved to a different location in San juan. On the way we overlooked the small sign "Balai" on the road, we had to make a u-turn after 3 barangays. Luckily we've asked for directions from the locals there or we would have gone straight to laiya.
We were given 3 adjacent rooms on the second floor, the balcony is spacious and we can see whole resort. The room is ok, cheap price for a room which accommodates 5-6 people. Very simple. Compared to the old one, this place is bigger and has fish ponds where you can actually fish. You can rent home made fishing rods with bait for P50, whole day.
I know most people don't enjoy the beach if it doesn't have white sand, but for us who just really loves the beach, we love swimming here. Few people on the beach, the sand is fine and best of all the water is warm. I even caught and release a baby swordfish and a pipe fish by the shore! The only problem we had were the sand flies comes sunset and sunrise and the trash.
All the staff are still friendly like before. they are all smiles when you glance at them. Food is still great (they have the same chef as before). They reserve the tables and seats for the guests (by groups). They have a swimming pool but i didnt try it, i stayed at the beach the whole time. They also have kayaks for rent. And for entertainment there is videoke and a billiards table.
Improvements: I hope they would clean the beach as often as possible. I have collected so many plastic trash floating by specially at low tide. I was very disappointed with this. trash is everywhere, although they sweep in the morning, it does little to help the beach.
Bigger tables. For 3 families sitting in a big and small table combined, it wasnt enough, we were bumping elbows as we eat. More dining space, when the resort is fully booked (100 people), the dining area gets really crowded. Sometimes we would wait a few minutes just to avoid the crowded space. The food is plenty, even if you eat an hour past the meal time starts, you don't have to worry if the food trays will get empty.
Electricity. Every now and then the electricity fluctuates. i noticed the lights would dim, the ac will turn down to fan mode, the electric fan shuts off.
Overall we loved our stay here at balai. They have great service that my dad (who doesn't like giving tips at all) gave a big tip for the staff. The place is quiet and relaxing.
if you're travelling as a couple and wants privacy, i suggest you get the aroma rooms. you'l...
