“An absolute gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

We booked here 1 day before travelling due to problems with other accommodation we had booked elsewhere. Thankfully there was a room available & the landlady was so friendly we were really looking forward to arriving.
It is situated in a small village in the middle of nowhere and is so pretty on the approach.
The main building is dated in the late 1800's and is so beautifully decorated and planned out.
We were taken to our room, when walking through a door into what we thought was another hallway, it was actually our room, it had an immaculate en-suite with a small landing area which led to the bedroom complete with a small television area. We were in room 1.
The service from telephoning to book through to our evening meal, breakfast & checkout was so relaxed yet completely professional. The restaurant downstairs is more 'a la carte' with a mixed menu including several fish, meat & poultry dishes, the waitresses are friendly & helpful, we had a lovely meal in a lovely environment which also benefited from children under the age of 10 not being permitted.
The landlady was so welcoming & really made us feel at home.
For breakfast served 8:30-9:45 there was a choice of cereals, yogurt as well as a full English, it was delicious.
Overall, it is well worth the price & we cannot wait to return, we really didn't want to go home!

Room Tip: Room 1 is great as it doesn't have rooms either side so no neighbourly noise. On the other hand...

Luckily got a table on Sunday for lunch. Lovely meal, naturally I suppose, it was a roast choice but very tasty if you are happy with limited menu. We will certainly go back and try another day/evening to test the menu further. Lovely attentive staff. Not particularly cheap but 3-course best value. Many thanks, see you again.

This was our 2nd visit, previously we went for a Sunday lunch and this time it was the day after our wedding and decided to have a nice evening meal and stay the night and then we met friends their for a Sunday lunch.

Every time they have exceeded my expectations. Room was very pleasant, nice bathroom, tv/DVD. Only slight drawback was the room we were in didn't have a bath however not enough to affect this review.

However what we come here for is the food and it is fantastic every time, I can't recommend it enough. Yes it's expensive but I feel I get more value for money out of one good meal here a posed to two average ones elsewhere.

We will definitely be going back!

We visited the restaurant on a busy Friday evening. It was booked last minute but they managed to fit us in!! It's a nice place, full of character and charm. They menu is good with enough choice and the wine list is reasonable too!! The food was extremely good and the service was fine too. The only criticism is that the table we were placed at was in a busy walk through and we were continually interrupted with various different people walking by.

This was our second stay at The Brownlow and it was just as good as the first. Very warm welcome from all the staff who are like friends. Our room was spotless, nicely appointed and decorated. Good quality throughout. We will be back!!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are individual with each as good as the other

Six family members spent a good part of last weekend at the Brownlow Arms. What a delightful place. We all three couples had fabulous accommodation, with some really fine touches, that one would not necessarily expect IE robes and slippers. The furnishings were tasteful, the beds and linen divine. Best of all the food was of superb quality and the service charming. We had a very good breakfast on Sunday, went away and di some exploring and came back had a terrific lunch. We all would really like to go back, and do highly recommend the place. My only slight niggle is that our room faced a road (Abeit a quite one) and there were no nets at the windows.

Room Tip: Ask for number 1 or number two, but really I think all the rooms would be impressive.

We always used to go to the Brownlow Arms on 'special occasions', with it being 25yrs since we met we both wanted to celebrate at the Brownlow Arms. However, we were totally disappointed with the meal. The steak was just presented on the plate with no garnish, trimmings etc. The veg selection was very poor, 3 potatoes between the two of us, and only enough veg for one serving. The side salad consisted of just lettuce leaves. For dessert we chose cheese, grapes & biscuits. The cheese was presented as cheese slithers, scattered around the plate, rather like a clock, and the 'grapes' - well the grapes there were 2, sliced into quarters, again there was no garnish, whereas in previous years there has been celery, about 10 grapes and various garnish. This was £7.95.
My husband asked the landlady if he could have a quiet word with her about the meal and she disappeared, the waitress told him she was busy, after a while she came out to see him. He explained how disappointed we were with the meal, and she offered no apology, or concern. We did not complain in an attempt to get the meal reduced, just that we were so looking forward to re-visiting one of our favourite restaurants. Sadly, no longer, we will not be visiting again.
