“Gem In The Rough”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

I travelled with apprehension to Chipata wondering where I how I was going to live for three weeks. Was pleasantly surprised when I found this lovely hotel, well furnished, very polite and friendly staff. The rooms are good with comfortable beds and nice beddings. A decent variety of DSTV channels. The food is okay, not excellent, but not bad at all. My three weeks here will pass comfortably.

Room Tip: I don't think there's much difference with the rooms.

We stayed here three times over a period of a month and what a pleasure! The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. Peter at the front desk was very professional: he is very guest focused and nothing was too much trouble. Restaurant service good and food tasty and well presented. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and the shower had plenty of very hot water and great pressure - very welcome after the long, dusty trips to get there. Location excellent and the property safe and secure. Highly recommended.

I stayed at the Protea on business. It could be a beautiful place, open aire dining, swimming, cultivated gardens and beautiful weather, but it was lacking something. There was no life or atmosphere in the place.
Having said that the food was reasonable and the staff weregood and helpful.

Room Tip: They cannot accept Amex. You cannot open the windows in the rooms at the front of the hotel, which...

The staff members were super friendly and the food was very good. The room was clean and the bed was comfy. Having your dinner with amazing scenery of Mother Nature is simply relaxing. And if you wake up hungry, breakfast there will make you full!

Room Tip: Didn't imagine to have such an experienece in Chipata!

So, stayed here recently on a trip for work. This is a new hotel way out east in Zambia, and I enjoyed my two days here. The entrance reception is roomy, the restaurant feels as big as an aircraft hanger, and the rooms themselves spacious and well-accommodated. Staff are friendly and welcoming. The bar area is a fine place to chill.

A couple of comments: wi-fi is glacial; there were frequent power-cuts when I was there (though this is a problem with the region, rather than the hotel, of course); and the hotel's modernity feels a little cold at times.

But, otherwise, a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Perhaps a room away from the main road (which, as the main drag to nearby Malawi, gets busy at times...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012 via mobile

Before coming into the Hotel I had very good expectations, according to the photos and past evaluations.

The truth is, for me of course, that this is not so luxurious as Protea Hotels announces. I had a reservation for 2 rooms, with just one reservation number and at the reception, when checking in, they just had one prepared room; even when I called 2 hours before confirming the reservation. After all the staff managed to provide the already payed 2 rooms.

The hotel decoration is fine and pleasant, I have to agree, but in many other aspects ot looses all that little shine. The room has horizontal bars windows which are not very good for sound isolation and neither a very good protection against mosquitos. This was another problem... at the time you enter in a room where you see several mosquitos and when the hotel provides, itself in the rooms, an killer spray... something is not right. The minibar, for a twinroom just had one bottle of water inside.

The Dinner buffet didn't have a very good variety of choice and, even worst, the food was almost cold. On the other side, the staff was very attentive at all.

The wireless network is awful and it doesn't have enough speed in cases that the hotel is full, as it was, and I just cannot do a Skype call.

I think that this hotel is not an Affordable Luxury as Protea announces. It's ok, but many things need to be changed before it can be rated as excelent.
