“Awesome atmosphere, great food, cool characters”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2014

What made the place awesome was all the action upstairs in the breezy open-air bar/restaurant overlooking town--Captain Jack's is really the spot in town, and all kinds of people come through looking for sailing trips and company. Backpackers, sailors, locals... a real cast of characters. Captain Jack and Jeff are both great guys who were fun to spend time with and gave good advice to get me around and enjoy Portobelo for my time there. The restaurant had amazing food--I had Thai seafood curry, way better than anything I have come across in Panama so far. The complaints about the restaurant not having backpacker prices is ridiculous--the staff will gladly point you in the direction of beans and rice just down the road. The hostel part was basic, affordable and typical: bunk beds, clean sheets, lockers, bathrooms, fans to keep you cool at night, WiFi--everything you need and nothing more.

Room Tip: It's dorms of bunkbeds, no private rooms and no reservations.

The manager (Jeff) had mates at the bar on the night we stayed Edie's our panama-Colombia sailing trip. All guests were in bed by 11 but the bar (above the dorms) was loud kept everybody awake well past midnight! Then he slept all morning on the couch.
The kitchen had good looking food, but way overpriced for backpacker accommodation. The bakery is your best bet for budget food.
The upstairs communal/sitting area was one of the better aspects of the hostel

Well the hostel is not bad, but BoB and we think that the 'Captain' knows that he is the only real hostel in Portobelo right know. We are sure he will get competition soon. The rate for the dorm is just too high and especially the bar and restaurant is too expensive. If you have a little walk into town, you will find cheaper beer and snacks (for example Birgit's and Rainer's 'Casa Vela' at the waterfront, a bit hidden but ask the 'Captain'). The hostel is not very clean, there is no kitchen and the 'Captain' made fun of us, as we told him we don't want to book a 550 dollar boat tour and try to find something cheaper. If you are in Portobelo, you can stay at Captain Jacks for one night and then look for another place to sleep

We went to
This place for dinner and breakfast. It has a great atmosphere, but the food is not very cheap. That said, good advice, good company and a nice place to relax. The waiter was very helpful in orienting us around town and giving us ideas of what to do in the area.

Stayed here for two nights and the place was great. It is a hostel so it's bunk beds but there are plenty of fans to keep everyone cool. The food is excellent but a bit pricey for the area. If you do stay here, walk down to the bakery in the morning, some of the best bread in Panama.

The hostel itself is a bit below average. The beds are a bit hot, the fans oddly placed, and the guest kitchen is outside. The food at their restaurant and bar is good but pricey, and the drinks twice what they cost in town. But it's a good vibe, and Captain Jack is a real captain, so if he's around, buy a beer and hopefully he will tell you a story.
The whole town is within a two block walk, including a great bakery, and a place to get $1 packs of cigs.

A good deal for $13/night for a dorm bed. I spent 11 nights at Captain Jack’s and give it solid ratings. Comfortable beds, good lounge, good dimming lights and fan-ventilation, and good lockers. A little noisy on Friday/Saturday night since the restaurant/bar is directly above the dorm. The noise could be lessened if a couple missing louvered glass panes near bed #6 were replaced. And fewer mosquitoes would get into the dorm room if the screens were also repaired or replaced by bed #6 where a couple holes have developed, one of those holes favored by a puppy that likes to poke his nose through it. But otherwise a good value.

Room Tip: Ask for Locker #19, since it is a larger one for the same price.
