“Best for December-February”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

We stayed at Nungwi last year but came to Kendwa for swimming. It was June then. That time there were many jelly fishes in the sea and it was hard to swim. But this time we stayed directly at the Gold Zanzibar at Kendwa. The sea was like in the brochures. Beautiful sea, white sand beach, 29-30 Celcius but not so humid weather. Best time and great hotel for swimming holidays. The hotel was also very nice. The rooms are very clean and very big. The staff very helpful comparing with the other hotels I stayed in Zanzibar. Foods are ok, enough variety for everyone. It is 20 meters from the KendwaRocks where you can party especially at Saturday nights. We only did not enjoy our massage activity. Thanks to Mr. Ram and all the staff we had a great vacation.

Room Tip: Rooms starting with 5, like 501 are at the beach so do your best :)

Very nice hotel! my kids really enjoy the pool as well as the white beach. Staff very kind and helpful.
Buffet setting for dinner very nice, each night in a different place, even though food its not espectacular.
Definetly going back on our next vacation!

Room Tip: upper rooms away from beach, restaurants and next door hotel on both sides.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2013

I took my elderly dad here for five days of rest after spending a week on the northern safari circuit. I did a lot of homework on where to stay on Zanzibar before deciding for this particular location and resort, and overall I’ve been very happy with my choice.

What I liked:

This resort looks and feels brand new, not any significant scratch to be seen anywhere.
The living units are well spaced out on the expansive grounds, amidst a beautiful and well tended garden landscape.

Beautifully designed and well crafted buildings, nicely blending traditional and modern architectural elements with each other.

Overall layout well thought out and tasteful.

Very large and functional room (we stayed in a garden room) with quality fittings and equipment. Beautiful terrace in front.

The pool…simply amazing! The beach…even better! One doesn’t fully appreciate how nice it is until one strolls over to the main stretch of Nungwi nearby which looks absolutely pitiful in comparison, especially when the tide is low.

Some (minor) complaints, respectively encouraging words on what could be improved:

The service staff was friendly and very helpful overall, and was for the most part clearly trying their best to please. For my liking this sometimes went a bit too far when attempts were made to rigidly enforce “by the book” formality, especially at dinner. E.g.: When picking up food from the buffet the waitresses literally forced the plate from my hand to deliver it to my table while I would have been much happier carrying it on my own. Personally I prefer relaxed service over this kind of silly pretentiousness. Some minor service mishaps happened throughout our stay (different food delivered than ordered, extra drink added to tab that hadn’t been consumed, etc), but one mustn’t forget this isn’t the Champs Elysee but a remote corner on a remote island in East Africa.

The food…! Dinners (both buffet and a la carte) were nicely presented and the quality of the food was alright. However, most of what was on offer tasted rather bland, lacking any kind of original touch, and therefore mostly forgettable. It’s almost as if the cooks are afraid of possibly challenging their guests’ palate by using spices. Remembering the character of the varied food we enjoyed in Stonetown we felt somewhat let down. My father even asked for chili to pep things up a bit on the first evening but none was available. To some degree the same complaint holds true for breakfast. There’s no variation at all and no local touch, other than a chef cutting up fresh fruits perhaps, which is nice of course. Any kind of home-made tropical jam or similar would have gone a long way. We’ve seen and had it offered at far cheaper places than Zanzibar Gold.

The room…! I thought the choice of a garden room not too close to the beach was a good one. The closer you get to the beach to more you hear from the restaurants, and worse, from the noisy Italian resort to the left or (in)famous Kendwa Rocks party resort on the right. Why pay extra for this possible nuisance?

It would have been great if the TV had allowed to stream movies from my private USB stick which was easy to plug in but apparently got blocked somehow by the device.

Room Tip: Garden rooms tend to be quieter, not to mention cheaper.

Our 3 night / 4 day stay at this hotel was a total disaster. Its fancy advertising claims are not true. They are only interested in Italian tourists and not on others. The menu is too limited. Food was totally mediocre. The sea view in the deluxe rooms is pathetic. The local staff were poorly trained. Zero supervision. Horrid place. Would never recommend this place to anyone

Everything was nice. Incredible room and beach. I enjoyed my stay at this hotel very much. I relaxed and gained a lot of energy for hard working. The manager was so dedicated, I appreciated him. You could swim, walk, read your book, listen to your music near the wonderful beach. Also, you could watch the sun set from the very good view. You could take lots of amazing photos Good value for the money

Room Tip: The second floor was good.

We stayed in the hotel in november for 2 nights. It was a really pleasent stay. The beach is great, the staff very friendly, animation program also cool. But watch out on the beach volleyballcourt, there is a hard electric box in the midle.
The food is very good, we especialy liked the menu diner, which was beautifully decorated and well served.
The only thing, which wasn't our cup of tea, was the behavior of the staff at the buffet dinner - they were too helpfull. As soon you filled your plate with food and went for the table, the staff took the plate and caried it to the table. It is really nice, but it was a little too much for me.
The rooms are just great! Big, with nice interior, teamaker and cosmetics. It is definetly a honeymoon destination.

Room Tip: Rooms that are closer to Eden village hotel are louder.

I went to Gold Zanzibar for 2 weeks in October. The hotel, in Kendwa is one of the best hotels that I have ever stayed at. The hotel reception with thatched roof leads down to the stunning golden sandy beach, with clear blue sea. Constant attention is given to the gardens around the hotel with beautiful flowers. Within the room was a huge comfortable four poster bed, built from traditional local timber, with patio doors leading to a veranda where you could enjoy the sea views and evening sunset. All the staff were friendly, helpful and professional. The food was delicious with a wide choice of chicken, local fish or beef dishes served in one of two restaurants. The Spa offers massages by attentive staff who left leave you feeling totally calm.and relaxed Overall a first class hotel, amazing location, with every attention to detail, to provide guests with a wonderful stay.
