“Perfect to unwind”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

My girl friend and I stayed here for 4 nights and loved it. What can we say, it's a very authentic place and perfect, if you're looking to get quality time for yourself. Great staff, a great room, great amenities, great food, great views and nice a garden area give you the perfect setting to relax and calm down - just peaceful.

The staff is so remarkably helpful, friendly and truthfully heartily, which we haven't experienced at any other hotel/ resort we stayed at - it was really hard to leave, when we did.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

Having read all the great reviews on Tripadvisor and elsewhere I booked four nights at Zen for the first days of our trip to Bali. Airport pick up was smooth, although the ride to Zen is quite a trip (a good bumpy three hours). The staff was very accommodating upon our arrival (although after we landed at 6 and arrived at the hotel by 10 we were unable to get dinner, apart from a tiny piece of chocolate cake) and was extremely friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

However, there were a few things that weren't as great as I had expected. We spent the first night in the first room of the row of sunrise rooms. Whilst pleasantly decorated on the inside and with a nice bathroom and open shower it felt a bit like a dungeon as all our windows were directly facing the main paths around the resort so that it was uncomfortable to open them. Also rather than a proper ocean view from the window, you have to sit on the balcony to see the ocean in the far distance - although on the balcony you had the same problem with guests and staff wandering around right in front of you (which despite there only being 14 rooms is considerable traffic). We asked to switch rooms to a sunset room as those are more secluded and private and have better views of greens and ocean, but those were fully booked. Instead we moved to a room at the end of the sunrise block, facing the other way, where it was quieter and better to sit outside your room, although this was a linked room, so that we could hear the people in the other room through the door.

The spa and especially its 4-handed aryuvedic massages are great, but pretty pricey for Balinese standards, considering we paid about half or less for comparable treatments during the rest of our trip. The pool is nice and offers great views into the valley and towards the ocean. The restaurant was okay, nothing particularly worth mentioning apart from the chai tea latte which is good!

Overall, we had an okay time at Zen, but enjoyed other places during our trip more, which was also to do with the location of Zen in regards to the beach. Rather than a 200 meter walk as advertised in the hotel website/ brochure somewhere it's a good 10 minute walk downhill and you encounter a not particularly attractive black sand beach where, at least when we went, no one had gone to sit at and no one was swimming. The waves were pretty high and the current looked strong so we didn't dare go in and it wasn't even appealing to sit at.

Friendly people, but not all that it's made out to be.

Room Tip: Definitely sunset rooms are the better option as they offer more privacy and better views.

Dear Zen Guest,

Thank you for posting your review on tripadvisor. Allow us to respond to your comments in turn:

“unable to get dinner”
The Zen Restaurant is always open and serving dinner with last orders at until 10pm. If you had requested dinner on arrival it would have been served as the restaurant is still open, serving guests often until after 11pm, even after guests have retired for the evening. Rest assured we will look into this matter and ensure this does not happen again.

“windows were directly facing the main paths…have to sit on the balcony to see the ocean in the far distance…considerable traffic”
You can see the ocean from every window in the sunrise rooms. We are surprised by the fact that you experienced considerable traffic as on the path in front of your original villa, we only have 7 sunrise rooms, not all of which were occupied. The Zen Resort is built atop a hill with wide open 270 degree sea views and villas are constructed in the traditional Balinese style, with 2 wooden carved ornate windows. We are not directly on the beach (as is clearly visible from our website photo gallery) and therefore you would have to sit on the balcony in order to enjoy the sea view to its fullest extent. so in the case of the sunrise rooms from wihtin, one can see the sea from every window.

“The spa and especially its 4-handed aryuvedic massages are great, but pretty pricey for Balinese standards, considering we paid about half or less for comparable treatments during the rest of our trip.”
We are pleased that you enjoyed the ayurvedic massages at our spa. We are not aware of many places in Bali that give 4 hand ayurvedic massages in either Ubud or south Bali, however we do know that the price at well known spas are twice that of the Zen prices. The Zen Spa is unique and renowned for combining true principles of Ayurveda with the beautiful spirituality of Bali and we are not aware of any other spa that can compare to this holistic wellness.

“Rather than a 200 meter walk as advertised in the hotel website/ brochure, the beach is a good 10 minute walk downhill and you encounter a not particularly attractive black sand beach where, at least when we went, no one had gone to sit at and no one was swimming.”
Although walking speeds vary greatly (depending on height, weight, age, fitness, terrain etc), at an average speed of walking an adult would cover a distance of 830 meters in 10 minutes. Zen beach along the pathway is less than 500 meters away. In addition, Zen beach is volcanic sand and therefore black in colour. We are only one of 2 resorts atop that particular stretch of coast line and most of our guests love the fact that our beach is serene, secluded and unfrequented by hoards of people. As no doubt you will have discovered on your travels around Bali, if you wanted to experience golden sand and very busy beaches, South Bali, and particularly Kuta is the place to go.

“The waves were pretty high and the current looked strong so we didn't dare go in and it wasn't even appealing to sit at.”
All seas, as opposed to lakes, are subject to waves and currents depending on the moon and earth alignment. We have an incredibly experienced dive master at Zen who is knowledgable in most matters to do with the sea, including waves and currents so for future reference, if you’re not sure about swimming in the sea, it is always a good idea to consult our resident expert.

We hope we have satisfied your concerns but should you have any more comments/queries, please do feel free to contact our manager, Budiani, via our website contact email link.

I needed a circuit breaker in my busy, hectic life and I got it at Zen. I had 6 days to be nurtured and nourished inside and out by the remarkable and generous staff of the Zen Resort in surroundings which were simply beautiful. The meticulous attention to detail in the presentation of rooms, food and gardens was both inspiring and greatly appreciated by our group. I think the pool was a particular highlight - very beautiful to hang on the pool side and look out over rice paddies and beyond to the ocean. I appreciated that the resort is secluded but not isolated from other activities. We were only a short walk to a very authentic Balinese experience with the local village and the beach in such close proximity.
Our response to our Zen experience was not IF we should go back but simply a matter of WHEN we would return!

It is in terms of accommodation, the nicest I've seen in Bali, very tastefully decorated, nice terrace to sit outside. Fine outdoor bathroom with bath and shower. Lovely spacious rooms and great bed.The garden and yoga terraces have stunning views and is enriched with budda statues and water features. Really peace with all your sences...

However for the price of this location / room, we felt sorry that we had to ask several times for bathfoam, that wasn't refilled, a kettle to make hot water that they would bring. Also someone from the servicestaff was hammering at 8:00 in the morning. These issues we weigh in our review.

Room Tip: Lovely Spa en Meditaions spaces

Dear Zen Guest,

Thank you for posting your review on tripadvisor. We apologise for the lack of bath foam and kettle, rest assured we have spoken with our housekeeping team who will work doubly hard to ensure this error does not occur again. With regards to the hammering at 8am, again we sincerely apologise for any disturbance this caused you. This was a one off small renovation project which took place for 10 mins early in the morning on account of the rainy season and high levels of humidity which are considerably reduced early in the morning.

We are very pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and that your senses experienced peace away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. We look forward to welcoming you again at Zen Resort Bali in the future!

As you arrive and the staff welcomes you, you get a sense that this is not your typical resort. You realize quickly that this place is truly dedicated to provide a holistic wellness experience. The philosophy behind the resort is based on achieving harmony, with yourself, others and the environment. Beautiful flora throughout the hotel and the smell of frangipani flowers already help you unwind and feel relaxed.
Every day there is yoga, meditation and an ayurvedic spa to heal soul and body. The hotel is a 5 star dive center (PADI) where excellent instructors can take you to the most amazing diving spots of Bali (and the world), whether you have never done it before (must try!) or you are a certified diver. We tried the discover scuba diving and it was an amazing experience.
The pool is great and the beach is a 10 minute walk away.
The food is average and in my opinion, portions are a bit small.
The rooms are comfortable, with relaxing music, mellow lighting (maybe a bit too dark) and an outdoor shower. They use solar heating and reduce the use of plastic bottles which I appreciate and is congruent with the resort.
Great place to unwind, connect with yourself and family.

We spent an amazing 4 days at Zen enjoying yoga, meditation, and incredible treatments. We were totally pampered from the minute we got there. The staff were incredible- nothing was too much trouble, everyone knew our names. The food was fresh and delicious and enough options to not get repetitive. The resort is beautiful and the rooms very comfortable. We will definitely return.

What an amazing retreat, The Zen Resort is! The warm welcome by the lovely staff was the start of exceptional service all week. Nothing was too much trouble and they all remembered my name. The spa was incredible with the most relaxing and therapeutic treatments, especially the four handed massage. The food was fresh and healthy with great choices from morning until evening. The gardens are lovely to relax in and meditation and yoga were a great start to every day. I plan on returning as soon as I can. I thoroughly recommend a stay here away from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy side of the island. I particularly loved the huge bedroom with verandah overlooking stunning gardens and private outdoor shower/bathtub.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the gardens at the front of the resort are the most spacious and private.
