“If you are traveling to Dunedin, you must stay here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

My cousin Paula and I stayed here on the last night of our two week trip around the South Island of New Zealand. We wish we had planned to stay longer. This is a gem of a place, made special because it is a working farm that is owned and operated by very warm and hospitable people, Chrissie and Gandhi Lucas (who are a very attractive couple!). It is equally close to downtown Dunedin and to the Dunedin Airport, which was our departure point to return to the U.S. Chrissie used to be a nurse, and she has a quiet, caring way about her. Gandhi is a tall and handsome farmer who used to be a competitive horseback rider. There are photos of him doing horse eventing (jumping) in the hallway which give a window on his past life. Chrissie and Gandhi bought the inn five years ago and have completely renovated the inside as well as the gardens outside, which are lovely. Sheep, horses, gardens and barns in the yard around the lodge make it a wonderful place to take photos and relax. When we checked in, Chrissie greeted us warmly and showed us to our room, which was simple but clean with a tv in the room. The bathroom was across the hall, but we had it to ourselves and it featured a claw-footed bathtub and a modern walk-in shower. (I enjoyed both the bath and the shower that evening.) The common room has a pool table, complimentary coffee and tea, and best of all for me, unlimited internet access (at no extra charge, which is rare in NZ). We slept peacefully then enjoyed a full breakfast with eggs from the farm, sausage from the farm, and English muffins along with butter and jam. A selection of yogurts, cereals, fresh fruits and coffee/tea were also served in the elegant dining room. After breakfast, Gandhi gave us a demonstration of sheep herding with his dog. He also offers a sheep shearing demonstration but unfortunately we had to leave to go to the airport. The airport shuttle did not arrive, even though Chrissie had called them, so she personally drove us to the airport. THEN, I realized I forgot my cell phone at the Inn so I called her and she drove back to the airport to bring me my phone. I was incredibly grateful and will always remember her for doing this for me. She was so gracious and kind about it. If I ever get a chance to return to NZ, I will plan to stay here for several days. I recommend at least two, if not three nights here to anyone who is doing the Catlins region or Dunedin. Evidently there are two suites that would be elegant to stay in, although we didn't get a chance to see them because they were occupied. There is also a hot tub on the deck, but we didn't use it unfortunately because we didn't have time! There were mostly Americans at the lodge. I think the word it out that the Silver Peaks Lodge is THE place to stay if you want genuine Kiwi hospitality, a real farm experience, gracious and classy hosts, comfortable sleeping rooms, delicious homemade breakfasts, and amazing views of rolling fields and farmlands, all for an excellent value. Oh, and did I mention there were really cute lambs all around the farm that pose for photos?

Room Tip: Ask about the suites with the glass walls that offer views for miles. Be sure to allow enough time t...

Silver Peaks Lodge is a working sheep farm and we enjoyed the farm demonstrations. The accommodations were nice and the views from the "farm house" were fantastic. The lodge offers fully cooked breakfasts which were outstanding. The weather during our stay was rather cool but some of the rooms didn't have heaters and electrical outlets, particularly in the bathrooms, were limited.

Thank you for your lovely review. We are really sorry you felt the cold during your stay and we do apologize for not checking with you. We have a heat pump in the guest bedroom area and there are fan heaters in all the bathrooms plus in the winter we have underfloor heating. We would certainly have given you another heater if we had known you were feeling the cold. If you ever come and visit us again please don't hesitate to ask. Many thanks again and best wishes.
Chrissie and Michael.

When we first went to Silver Peaks, we thought we were at the wrong place. We sure were glad it was correct. It was a big and beautiful house with a farm full of friendly animals and fantastic view. Everyday we hear the beautiful chirping of birds with the wonderful view of hills and mountains and farm animals. There was even a farm demonstration and hot or cold breakfast depending on your preference. The hosts were very kind, friendly and helpful people. Would have loved to stay there longer or even retire in a place like that.

We had a great time in otago. The sights, the beer, and sliver peaks lodge. The location has breathtaking scenery. A little out of the city, but as we had a rental car it wasn't a problem. Great services, excellent breakfast. Sorry we to had take the shield back to hawkes bay with us

We stayed at the Silver Peaks Lodge for just one night as a stop over in Dunedin, on our way to Queenstown. We were travelling with another family so had 3 rooms. The rooms were comfortable and very clean. Breakfast was divine. We had a fully cooked breakfast, cereal, fruit, tea, coffee etc. It was delicious. The breakfast table was set up so nicely and the view from the dining room was fantastic. The house has a lovely country feel. We had an enjoyable time, although it was a short stay we would highly recommend it. Chrissy is a lovely lady and will be sure to look after you. Thanks Chrissy for making our stay a pleasant one!

We took the biggest room for 2 night stay in end May 2013. The weather was surprisingly cold and even snowed. The room and bathroom did not have heater. Fortunately, we were the only occupants staying there for that 2 nights, we requested for the portable heater along the corridor to be pushed into our room. Chrissy was very nice to let us bring it in.

The service provided by the hosts was very nice. The breakfast provided was enjoyable with much surplus. Yes the place is tired and dated but all the same provides an idyllic setting. The BB is easy to find.
