My cousin Paula and I stayed here on the last night of our two week trip around the South Island of New Zealand. We wish we had planned to stay longer. This is a gem of a place, made special because it is a working farm that is owned and operated by very warm and hospitable people, Chrissie and Gandhi Lucas (who are a very attractive couple!). It is equally close to downtown Dunedin and to the Dunedin Airport, which was our departure point to return to the U.S. Chrissie used to be a nurse, and she has a quiet, caring way about her. Gandhi is a tall and handsome farmer who used to be a competitive horseback rider. There are photos of him doing horse eventing (jumping) in the hallway which give a window on his past life. Chrissie and Gandhi bought the inn five years ago and have completely renovated the inside as well as the gardens outside, which are lovely. Sheep, horses, gardens and barns in the yard around the lodge make it a wonderful place to take photos and relax. When we checked in, Chrissie greeted us warmly and showed us to our room, which was simple but clean with a tv in the room. The bathroom was across the hall, but we had it to ourselves and it featured a claw-footed bathtub and a modern walk-in shower. (I enjoyed both the bath and the shower that evening.) The common room has a pool table, complimentary coffee and tea, and best of all for me, unlimited internet access (at no extra charge, which is rare in NZ). We slept peacefully then enjoyed a full breakfast with eggs from the farm, sausage from the farm, and English muffins along with butter and jam. A selection of yogurts, cereals, fresh fruits and coffee/tea were also served in the elegant dining room. After breakfast, Gandhi gave us a demonstration of sheep herding with his dog. He also offers a sheep shearing demonstration but unfortunately we had to leave to go to the airport. The airport shuttle did not arrive, even though Chrissie had called them, so she personally drove us to the airport. THEN, I realized I forgot my cell phone at the Inn so I called her and she drove back to the airport to bring me my phone. I was incredibly grateful and will always remember her for doing this for me. She was so gracious and kind about it. If I ever get a chance to return to NZ, I will plan to stay here for several days. I recommend at least two, if not three nights here to anyone who is doing the Catlins region or Dunedin. Evidently there are two suites that would be elegant to stay in, although we didn't get a chance to see them because they were occupied. There is also a hot tub on the deck, but we didn't use it unfortunately because we didn't have time! There were mostly Americans at the lodge. I think the word it out that the Silver Peaks Lodge is THE place to stay if you want genuine Kiwi hospitality, a real farm experience, gracious and classy hosts, comfortable sleeping rooms, delicious homemade breakfasts, and amazing views of rolling fields and farmlands, all for an excellent value. Oh, and did I mention there were really cute lambs all around the farm that pose for photos?
