We did this tour from a cruise ship. Despite the fact that we had booked it months ago through SHORE EXCURSIONS and had our electronic ticket and our paid invoice, we were not on the Twin Adventures list. Luckily, the guide just added our names and said we could come along. Unfortunately, the mini bus was basically full and so some passengers had to sit in the fold up chairs in the aisle, making it very crowded and slow and labourious for getting on and off the bus.
The tour itself was quite informative, but I would have liked more information about local history and the geology and ecology of the island.
The first shopping stop was Rimas, which basically must be the wholesaler to every other person on the island, because they had the best stock and by far the best prices on the island. I really wish I had known that then because I would have bought alot more of my things right there. The rest of the shopping was basically at open air kiosks, independently run. I bought a chilled coconut and drank the coconut milk - surprisingly refreshing and fun! Our tour guide said to never take the first price they offer you and to always haggle for a better deal, but we tried that twice and were shot down.
We were taken to Orient Beach, to the Kakao beach restaurant. Our guide told us there would be chairs and umbrellas there for us, but when we sat in some, we quickly were asked for $20 rental. We didn't pay and were forced to leave. My daughter was also asked repeatedly if she wanted her long hair braided. We were asked if we wanted to buy jewellry and food and drinks etc., to the point where it got very annoying.
Overall, this was a decent tour. I would recommend it as a way to get a quick overview of the island if you have never been there before and only had a limited time.
The shopping area in St. Martin (Phillipsburg) and a nice beach and boardwalk area is an easy walk from the cruise pier - no taxis needed.
