Quaint, pretty, family-friendly town bordering the water... certainly very pretty! The castle is great to roam! The gardens are beautiful - the grounds are spectacular. The castle, itself, wasnt super impressive. I've been to a few castles and I just wasnt super impressed by this one.
The museum element was okay. No rooms were done up to look as if they would have during the castle's heyday. The castle is very well preserved, if we're talking structure. It just doesnt have the financial firepower to be a standout castle, to me. Felt kind of hollow.
It's about a 1 1/2 hour bike ride from the city. I would recommend doing that, if its down your alley. You go through a very popular cycling and walking park and pass a WWII bunker museum on the way. I was amazed at how many people were out in those parks.
I really think Muiderslot (castle and town) is best for families with teens or young children or couples taking a break from Amsterdam, looking for something quiet and nice.
