“Dinner Visitors and Playfull monkeys”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2007

Another beautifull lodge hidden away in the middle of a game reserve. There are private bungalos and rows of rooms along rambleing paths. Make sure to take a flash light since the paths are lowley lit at night. Be prepared for critters just outside (and a few bugs inside) your room at night. If your lucky, a family of elephants grazing on the lodges resturant garden area may join you for desert after dinner. A baby elephant followed by her mom joined us to the delight of all!. The rooms are a little on the tatty side and could use some rehab. The food and dining room are top notch. There are nature talks etc available in the evening. The gift shop is one of the best. The curious and sweet Vervet monkeys abound everywhere in the lodge. Keep track of your things. They will search for "goodies" if bags/backpacks etc are left unattended. They don't do any real harm but they are adept at even opening (correctly) zip lock bags to get to penut brittle! The park it self is flat and has minimal scrub so the wild life is easy to see. You will see Wildebeast, Zebra and Antelope all around you for miles. There is a great Maasai Village to go to see. You can take all the pics you want and freely interact with the tribe. The children are adorable and curious but shy. They have a sweet school there.

Me and my boyfriend stayed at this lodge as part of our prebooked safari in March 2007. Although this lodge could be considered as being that of exotic nature because of it's location, it was somewhat disappointing because it has no view to waterhole/ animals like some other lodges do. The waterhole is complete covered by trees and bushes and there are no animals because there is no water. The rooms at the lodge are basic, it has all the necessities such as bed, shower and lights but don't expect any luxuries just because it's part of Serena chain. The rooms do not have any view other than bushes. The only animals you can expect to see from this lodge are monkeys and they are everywhere. The restaurant at the lodge is pleasant - quite small but there is plenty of food and the quality of food really isn't bad - in fact probably the best part of the lodge. There is a small swimming pool but the water was extremely cold. The sun lounges and the pool are covered by huge trees so there isn't a chance for sunbathing although after all, it's the safari you are there for and not the sun tan. There is a money exchange at the lodge and they charge the same commission as everywhere else. The bar is pleasant too but the drinks are pricey averaging £4.00 for a glass of wine and £3.00 for a bottle of beer. There is some evening entertainment but this needs to be prebooked because the tables are set up at the bottom of the grounds. We did see hyanes walking pass whilst being served barbecue and watching the masai people dance. The evening entertainment with drinks and 3 course meal cost you around £30 each. Amboseli itself as a safari park is good, it's open and you have a direct access to view animals such as elephants, giraffes, hyanes, buffalos, antilopes and many many more. Accommodation wide, we would choose to stay somewhere else next time. Also, bear in mind that if you are travelling from Kenya to Amboseli by safari car - this takevery long time and the roads in some places are horrid. Also bear in mind that we were accompanied by gunned army guides from Tsavo to Amboseli for safety reason - this is not something to be afraid of - it is just precaution.

  • Liked — Peaceful
  • Disliked — Too closed in and no view from anywhere in the lodge

I stayed here as part of a Safari tour, and all I can say is I will NEVER stay here again. In the tour were mostly couples, but myself and a very nice American lady were travelling on our own. This place treated the pair of us like second class citizens, even though we had both paid the dreaded single supplement. All our couple fellow travellers got nice roomy air conditioned rooms on the far side of the complex, with views of the wildlife and scenery. The room I was allocated was in the old part and was about 6ft by 4 ft. It was like a cell, with barely enough room for the suitcase. the window was literally 6inches by 12 inches. I refused point blank to stay in that room and was moved to a slightly bigger room but again, no A/C, no Mosquito net, no view, a disgraceful bathroom. Then when the American lady arrived on a later bus, she was given the tiny box room that I refused!!
If you you are travelling alone to this hotel be warned!!!
I will be returning to Kenya for a safari soon, but will NEVER stay at this place again!!

My fourth stay at Amboseli. They have completed updating the rooms which has opened up the rooms to a small but private, cozy sitting area right outside your rooms. The walls have been painted with African animal motifs and there is great lighting in each room. Electricity is provided 24 hrs, which is a nice plus and the bathrooms and linen are VERY clean and white.

Amboseli is five star safari lodge with great food, service and dedicated to making each guest feel special. The staff meets each guest with clean cool washcloths to wipe off the dust from the drive into the safari lodge encampment.

The game walk was disappointing as it was only a 1-2 kms SLOW walk close to the encampment and offered little in the way of adventure.

I continue to return to Amboseli because it is excellent accommodations and is close to Tsavo National Park and has incredible views of Mt Kilimanjaro.

  • Liked — Permanent huts for rooms.
  • Disliked — Bush Walk was disappointing.
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't miss a trip to Amboseli.

Lovely rooms though we needed a triple and got a roll-away shoved into a double room (watch your toes!). Buffet was fresh. Pretty cool having the Maasai locals around to protect you from the black faced monkeys. We were lucky enough to see lots of elephants and get a full day with Kilimanjaro out but don't bet on it!

We stayed at several excellent serena lodges during our time in Africa and although this may have not been the biggest or perhaps the most plush, it was certainly the most friendly and welcoming. The staff were outstanding! The rooms were lovely and the food was great, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would happily return. We particularly liked the little monkeys that ran around the place and although you didn't really have any view from your room the service and atmosphere certainly made up for it!!!

  • Liked — The wonderfully friendly staff
  • Disliked — no view although we didn't really mind about that
  • Tips/Secrets — Take a deep breath before jumping in the pool its very cold!!!!

Within the context of Kenya all lodges have a high standard to live up to and the Amboseli Serena is presently only average amongst them. The rooms are quite small and the bathrooms are OK, but their real drawback is a complete absence of a view. One of the selling points of Amboseli for many people is the wonderful view of Mount Kilimanjaro not only can't it be seen from any of the rooms but it can't really be seen from the lodge itself.

There is a major refurbishment/rebuilding programme going on which might address this particular issue.

There are many plus points. The food is excellent at all times with great variety coupled with freshness. Service is both friendly and excellent also. The position is also very good indeed for access to the gane park, which is also first class. For any birdwatchers, of which I am one, this lodge is recommended for position alone. I would happily stay here again.
