“Mariners Church Safari”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2013

I loved this place! It is right by a Maasai village. Massai warriors are on the property, serving mimosas and ready with the sling shot to scare off the monkeys that freely roam the property. The only thing I wasn't totally impressed with were the safaris. They don't get close enough to the animals. Unlike my safari in Mala Mala in S. Africa where the guides actually tracked and took you to the animals; this safari stays only on the jeep path, so make sure to bring your telephoto or zoom lens if you want to get really good pictures.

Otherwise, it is a great location, very serene, clean rooms that are nicely decorated, good food and serviceful staff.

In my 2 night stay at Amboseli Lodge, I was robbed by black-faced monkeys to the tune of a sugar packet and a piece of banana bread ... not as bad as a friend ... got her wallet lifted .. her chasing and yelling at a monkey was almost as good as a comedy show ... but all of this was just GOOD FUN ... I loved it!! ... oh yeah, and the lodge is nicely appointed. My room was appointed with a ceiling fan ... much appreciated. I should probably talk more about the lodge ... very nice, clean, everything (actually more) than I expected ... On the walls of all of the rooms are paintings of animals ... I had a porcupine ... hmmmm, does Africa even have porcupines? (it didn't keep me up at night). The views of Mt Kilamanjaro ... magical ... there's even a little bit of snow up there ... got my favorite photos here ... game in the foreground, mountain in the background ... AWESOME!!

The Amboseli Serena Lodge is where I stayed for 2 nights on my Amboseli National Park part of my safari. This is my favourite accommodation so far. There are monkeys everywhere and if you leave your door open they will pay you a visit which is not a good thing. One even tried to pinch my shoes that I had cleaned and had outside to dry.
Again red and blue lizards everywhere .
When you enter the grounds you pass under some wire that is hanging over head this is to stop the elephants from entering the grounds there is a symbolic set of ropes once you enter the grounds to reflect same.
The monkeys at times even venture into the lodge and that is where once again Masai are employed to keep them away. I didn't like the idea of using a sling shot to deter them as this could harm the monkey.
The room was appointed with a ceiling fan the first in my travels in East Africa and appreciated. Again roll back bed is done and personal toiletries supplied as well as complementary water.
On the walls of my room where paintings of animals and you find this throughout the lodge .
Food is adequate one thing for sure no one tourist will starve in East Africa.
You do see armed guards for security but again tend to blend in well.
This is the last shop in my travels so again if you see something that you like buy it as souvenir shopping is not bountiful in East Africa on my safari.
A most pleasurable stay.

We had been twice in Ngorongoro Serena lodge and therefore we had no doubt in choosing Amboseli Serena. We are happy for our choice. Despite being quite big, It is a comfortable and warm lodge, with clean rooms and tasty meals. The staff are friendly and polite. Situated right in front of Kilimanjaro, it is a very good start for profitable game drives. We very very lucky to see lions eating a wilderbeest among a pack oh hyenas.

We had a fantastic experience at Amboseli Serena Lodge. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable and the buffet meals, excellent. Our safari, organised by Jt safaris of Diani Beach Mombassa, was an eye opening journey thanks to our fantastic driver, Peter. He pointed out all the wildlife and gave us plenty of information on all the animals and birds. I would not hesitate to recommend both Amboseli Serena Lodge and Jt safaris if you want to see the wildlike of Kenya in comfort (as much as the roads will allow).

Good value for money. Service and buffet meals good. View of Mount Kilimanjaro is best at dawn. It's an 80km+ drive on dirt roads to lodge, make sure you have the right vehicle for the trip! Charge to enter the park PER DAY of your stay. Evenings around campfire with live music makes for an enjoyable time. Game drives, bush dinners and Masai village tour available. Be sure to visit Observation Hill. Seeing herds of elephant cross the African plains with the snow capped Mount Kilimanjaro in the background... unforgettable!

Room Tip: Rooms 68-75 have front view of waterhole for viewing and sunset. Open lawn and patio out front. Othe...

The Lodge is nicely setup with all the amenities. The welcome is nice, we arrived late in the afternoon and were received with a cold towel to freshen up and the welcome drink which was needed after a hot and dusty drive. The check in was quick and efficient, after which we were taken to our room.

The room is comfortable with a balcony overlooking trees and vegetation. It has a balcony to sit out and relax. The washrooms were clean and the shower was great with a lot of pressure and hot water all through. Having a kettle in the room would have been nice and convenient for tea/ coffee. The house keeping staff were up to par and our room was made up for the night and cleaned in the morning.

The reception staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant was adequately staffed being a busy weekend and were full, but couldn't fault on the service. The vegetarian food was good and were well catered for especially with the eggless desserts. There was a good choice during all meals. The tea and coffee facility on the patio was great with a view of the open plains and several animals coming and going. The pool is well kept and clean and has a reasonable number of beds. Be careful of the monkeys especially at the patio area, snatch your pastries given any chance though their is a guard keeping them at bay.

It's a 3 and half to 4 hour drive from Nairobi via the Emali - Loitokitok road, but well worth a visit. You can't see Mount Kilimanjaro from the lodge but definitely whilst on the game drive.
