“Great rural hospitality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

After reading the vastly contradicting reviews about this establishment, my curiosity was piqued and I decided to overnight there out of season. My husband and I went in with very few expectations since we were interested in the quality of service we could expect since we considered the rates (inclusive of dinner and breakfast) to be low in comparison to other establishments.

The service we received was typical of a country hotel and if you expected the usual luxuries associated with hotels, you'll be disappointed. Our room and en-suite bathroom were dated, and some items had been well used and could be replaced (yes, that shower curtain) but importantly everything was clean.

Then when it came to meals we found the dinner to be satisfactory and the portions decent- sized. A substantial breakfast was served on the enclosed patio with a river view.

All in all, I felt I got value for money and would definitely return there as this is one of the more affordable places in this scenic part of the Breede River.

A very laid back time, a trip back in time, peaceful and pleasant. Good value for money. Will go back again to escape the madding crowd. Don't expect 5 star, it is a family hotel in a very rural setting. Good base to visit Cape Infanta. And enjoy the pont trip.

We telephoned the hotel to ask directions they told us it was 40km Capetown side of Swellendam yes it was but they failed to tell us it was 38km off road , my car is a old car but in very good condition but the off road did not help.
The hotel advertise boat trips but as we were the only two people staying that night no boat trip, The swimming pool was out of order and the reception said I could go in the river as being. Disabled this was not to good advise .
The evening meal which was a set meal was at very low standard ,so we left the next morning and should have stayed a second night which we had payed in advance .
We will not be going back.

We didn’t stay at the hotel itself, but rented a houseboat on the Breede River behind the hotel. When doing something like that, you need to bring along your calm and adventurous spirit. The houseboat itself is not luxurious, but has all the necessities (stove, fridge, toilet, comfy bed). The shower on board is a hand shower and the toilet is a porter potty. Luckily they do provide an extra toilet and shower at the hotel as well for if you want to do your business more comfortably. The silence at night and the fact that there were no other boats on the river when we were there provided for a truly blissful and romantic adventure. Just two points of caution: (1) Plan your navigation on the river as thoroughly as possible keeping the tides and morning mist in mind, especially on your last day. (2) You’ll have to travel on a dirt road for about an hour to get there.

Our stay started out with a very nice dinner in the hotel`s restaurant. The discracefull looking showercurtain was the first bad taste in the mouth. The (white) towels looked brownish and we were told it is due to the fact that it`s being washed with riverwater!! The pillows and mattress on the bed resulted in a terrible backache. During the night you could here the neighbour snoring next door! Outside it was just as bad - the grass was long and the grounds were unsave for children due to flood damage not yet completely repaired. When complaining to the reception, we were met with a very unfriendly and unprofessional lady who later came to apologize for her behaviour. When on holiday you want to relax AND get value for money - definitely not possible in this hotel!!!!!!!

We booked on to the houseboats. We were not told of the 39k dirt road. The housebaot was disgusting!! Big stain the size of a dinner plate on the seating. Grubby and dirty. A far cry from LUXURY as stated in the add. We were therefore obliged to stay at the hotel. Sleeping on that boat was not an option. When I call it antiquated, not in any charming way. I mean out of date and old fashoined. We were charged full price even though we didn't get offered the 5 course dinner included in the price and there was no hot water in our bathroom. The shades on the bedside lamps were falling off. The curtains were hung a foot from the top of the window. The way down to the boat was unlit and dangerous. There was no management on duty. We were told not to spoil the receptionists day when we called to complain to the management. Do yourself a favour and don't go!!! A complete rip off!!
