“The Most Elegant Hotel in Lovina”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

We stayed at The Damai. A stunning hotel, The Damai has 14 villas, varying in size from the intimate to the palatial, each set in a lush tropical garden and decorated with stylish furniture, fabrics and artefacts from Bali. The Damai is owned by a Danish hotelier who is, I am sure, behind the hotel's elegantly refined design.

Ours was a deluxe villa, with a small veranda surrounded by a fragrant herb garden. The rooms had fine hardwood furniture and local antiques, creating a simple, elegant tropical style but also including all mod cons such as TV, DVD and Wi-Fi. The large open air bathroom had a stone jacuzzi filled with water from a local stream, and an outside shower in a private walled garden brimming with lush greenery.

The grounds were extensive, and tastefully lit in the evenings. There were several different gardens and a spa, as well as water tanks to keep live crayfish. Near the reception area and bar, the swimming pool overlooked the hillside leading down to the beach far below.

We also had a look at the magnificent Umah Raja Villa, the estate's largest at 310 sq metres, with a master bedroom and 2 junior bedrooms, all connecting to their own en suite bathroom. The living room with dining area was luxuriously decorated with antiques from Bali, Java and other parts of Indonesia, as well as having fine locally crafted furniture. Outside, there was a large veranda, balcony, covered pavilion and two private swimming pools.

The hotel is set into a hillside overlooking Lovina, and it is approximately a two mile journey to the beach area with its bars and restaurants. This was not a problem for us as we had a hire car, but otherwise any trip into town would require a taxi (not a big expense in Bali, where most short trips cost £1).

We enjoyed the tranquillity and beauty of the hotel's grounds, and mainly lounged around by the large swimming pool, reading, enjoying a few cocktails at the bar and relaxing. The Damai is one of the most elegant hotels we experienced in Bali, and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone visiting Lovina.

The award-winning restaurant at The Damai is said to be Lovina's best restaurant, and indeed one of the best in Bali. It serves organic vegetables and meats from its own small farm, together with a fresh catch from the sea and imported delicacies.

Breakfast was very good, with Indonesian, Continental, American and Japanese options. We sampled all four during our two days, and all were very good although the American was the weakest, Japanese (mahi-mahi smoked in green tea and smoked, miso soup, omelette roll, fish cake and steamed rice ) and Indonesian (nasi goreng or mie goreng and tropical fruits) the best. There was a chef who would prepare and cut whichever tropical fruit guests selected and present them very temptingly - dragon fruit, star fruit, snake fruit and guava among others.

We also had dinner at The Damai one evening. There are several set and à la carte menus, but we opted for the 3 course Balinese set menu (£25 per person) which was excellent. This started with Sate Burung Dara - sweet basil marinated pigeon grilled on a lemongrass stick, with young fern tips and long bean salad, and fresh lime.

We then slipped in a dish from the à la carte menu - young jackfruit steak, peppered and pan-fried, served with roast beetroot, red wine braised shallots, and pommes allumette (£10).

The main course was Kare Be Siap - a fragrant coconut curry with chicken, oriental squash and pak choy served with organic Balinese rice and fried garlic.

Dessert was a spectacular Dadar Gulung - thin pancakes rolled around coconut and palm sugar, coconut ice cream, vanilla tuille, snake fruit salad and lemon grass syrup.

I had the absolute pleasure of staying at the Damai with my partner on a trip to Bali last year. we had wanted to go to the Damai as it seemed to be the best property on the north coast of Bali as rated by tripadvisor. I left it a little late and tried to get into one of the standard rooms as it was all our budget could afford, unfortunately all standard rooms were gone so I contacted management and asked if they could fit us in anywhere. They replied that they had a standard room for us, so we trekked from the North to the South of Bali, finally arriving at the beautiful Damai villas perched on the hillside over the beautiful Damai bay.
Once arriving at the property we were immediately made to feel welcome by the staff and the management and were delighted to hear that we had been upgraded to their best room the Raja Suite. We were driven through the lush gardens across a quaint bridge in a hotel buggy, up the hillside to arrive at the top and to the amazing Raja villa.
My partner and I have stayed at some nice villas in our time but this villa had them all beat hands down. The villa was huge, had three bedrooms all extremely well set out, two living areas decked out in beautiful antique furniture and local art and an amazing infinity pool with views of the coastline that can only be described as breathtaking. The master bedroom was our last stop on the tour by our friendly butler and they had really saved the best to last, the four poster bed dubbed 'the flintstones bed' by the staff there has to be seen to be believed. It was made out of four upright beams each the size of a tree trunk with a very comfortable mattress. It was a bed fit for a king which was quite relevant as our butler told us that the King of Denmark had stayed in the room a month before us.
We definitely were treated like royalty by the staff at the resort, the food was amazing whether eaten at the restaurant or eaten in room. The spa was lovely and the massages were excellent. The villa was honestly one of the best places that not only have I stayed in, but that I have seen.
I apologize to the management that it has taken me a year to write this review, but i promised that i would review the Damai and finally i have.
If you are going to the north side of Bali, then stay here, you will not regret it. We would not have been disappointed in any of their rooms but if you want some opulent luxury and an afford it then pay the extra to stay in the Raja suite as it is a truly amazing experience. If i could have given it 10 stars i would have.

Room Tip: If you can afford it go the Raja villa, truly amazing.

Well-worth the drive up North if you don't mind some quiet time away from the hustling crowds which we were very much in need of. The hotel has been around for many years now but they do a good job at maintaining the villas. Our villa was incredibly spacious, with a gorgeous view of the ocean from the Pool. Breakfast and dinner was good - we loved the fruity home-made jams :)

The gardens and grounds are well-maintained. The staff were superb. Highly recommended if you are looking to go off the beaten tourist track in Bali.

The Damai is a good option in Northern Bali, located near Lovina Beach, on the mountain side, it has good views of the ocean in the distance and surrounding forest.
On arrival we received a warm greeting from our 'Butler' and completed a fast check in and were driven by golf cart to our Pool Villa.
The Villa was fairly large and had an L shaped Pool on the outside as well as gazebo.
The main issue here was that the villas are all very close to each other and we could see/hear the people in the adjacent villa. For the price paid I was expecting a lot more privacy.
The room itself was very comfortable filled with amenities as well as fresh fruit basket and water.
I guess I also had super high expectations from the photos online but our view from the Villa wasn't amazing, apparently some of the other villas have better views.
We were then moved to the 3 room villa which is huge, has 2 pools and a better view. The bedroom was pretty incredible and very large with attached bathroom/shower. It even had 2 lounge/tv areas. Again I had an issue with privacy here. Additionally the noise from surrounding homesteads and traffic was bothersome at times.
The 'butler service' that is advertised is more like a normal operator/concierge like at any other hotel. When one thinks of butler service, I at least think of on demand, personal attention. When we ordered in room dining, this came with an additional service charge, which we thought would be included in the free butler service, so this was confusing.
The bar and restaurant were great. It's worth pre-booking a table by the pool for dinner as this is much more romantic than dinner at the restaurant where the lighting is very bright (and they wouldn't turn it down despite my request). The food is gourmet and a good mix of local and international flavors. The bar has some great cocktails too!
The grounds are pleasant, with fruit and vegetables growing around the area which was interesting.
We tried free yoga at the Spa which we both enjoyed. We also tried the cooking class and we loved it, the lady chef was excellent and very patient with us. Afterwards we ate the food we cooked for lunch at a small table set up just for us away from everyone.
We also thought all the staff were very friendly and mostly accommodating.

Room Tip: Some villas have better views that others, they all seem to be lacking in privacy though.

Dear James
Thank you very much for your review and your feedback. We are delighted that you chose Damai as a product for your Northern Bali experience.
We are also happy to note you enjoyed the warm welcome, the amenities in the room, the comfort of the rooms, yoga class, dining by the pool side and the cooking class with our chef.
On the feedback about the butler service, it is our aim to make sure that the guests have a point of contact at all times though the butler is not a personal butler. This then makes them less intrusive and guests use their help and services when required. They just support the restaurant on room service by transporting them with big trays which are physically carried and it is fair price to pay 10% service charge for this. We also do not charge for room service for breakfast which we want guest to experience and you may not have realized this.
As you rightly pointed our the staff are very accommodating and request for turning down the lights at the restaurant may not have been understood by the staff as English is not their mother tongue and we have guests with varied English accents.
We do hope to make our website better with more images, floor plans, layouts that guests can review and understand the product before buying.Price and level of privacy is an individual perception and there will be cases where we please some and not please others.
On behalf of the staff and the management, we thank you once again for staying at The Damai and we do hope to see you in the near future.
Best Regards

We had a fabulous stay at Damai, opting for the North South package, the only downside being not enough time at this beautiful resort. The pool studio was very spacious and private, and the staff were second to none, extremely friendly and professional. We are already planning a trip back!

It is hard to pinpont what exactly makes this place so great. Setting is fantastic, food is great (and they grow half of it themselves!), villas are gorgeous and the staff is smiling, graceful and discreet. So I have to guess it is a combination of all these things that makes this gem of a hotel so very hard to leave. Or maybe its the spirits? Anyway, we have been coming to Bali for years and Damai remains our very favorite hotel on this great island, if not in the world.

Cant rave about this place enough. A private secluded little slice of heaven at the top of Bali. Loved every minute of the experience that is Damai Lovina. From the moment we arrived we were astounded at the attention to detail and level of professionalism. The staff were extremely warm and welcoming and every one of them greeted us by our first names. The grounds this resort is situated on are utilised to grow a majority of the produce they use in the dishes that come from a highly trained culinary team. The start to every day was an amazing breakfast that left us satisfied till well past lunch time. With fresh fruit and juice, tea, coffee, fresh pastries and then the cooked eggs, bacon and tomato. It was absolutely outstanding. The private tours that are on offer through Damai are also certainly something that needs to be experienced. We are both extremely glad we chose this place for our honeymoon and looking at a return visit in the near future. We cant say enough about this place as every moment was an experience that left us blown away. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a private get away.

Room Tip: Umah Nagga. Got to go a pool villa.
