“In need of refreshment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013 via mobile

I stayed on an a summer special at a reasonable overnight rate but drinks and food are overpriced. A burger on room service £14.00 with a wholly unjustified tray charge added of £ 5 is unwarranted particularly as the burger was lukewarm. Rooms are dated. I had no mini bar, restaurant menu, or even pen and stationery provided. I played golf on Sunday evening and there were so many people on the course that I gave up after 9 holes which suggests management of the course needs some attention. Breakfast is however excellent and all the staff and reception staff are friendly and helpful. Unfortunately this hotel and others in the group ( like Slaley Hall ) have seen better days and need some serious investment to make them truly 4 star.

We spent three nights at Dunston Hall, who severely disappointed for a four star hotel. The hotel gardens and surroundings look amazing upon arrival, however as soon as you have to drag your own bags in from the car into reception, you start getting the idea that perhaps something is a miss.

The receptionist who checked us in actually then offered to help us with our bags (which was a little odd, as surely that wasn't his job). The room was very tired looking. Thin sheets, hair in the bed, holes in the bed linen and a bed throw, which was discoloured with stitching coming apart. The bathroom was incredibly disappointing. Towels were simply re-folded the next day and put back onto the towel rail. Shampoo & shower gel bottles were not replaced.

Room service is available until 11pm (full menu) and then becomes just a sandwich menu with only one available curry as a hot meal. Not even a club sandwich was available at 11.15pm, which is very disappointing after having travelled up for three hours in a car...

We ordered room service on Saturday night and it took 1 hour and 20 minutes to arrive... midnight was the arrival of the food, which was luke warm. There was no explanation as to why it was so late (and cold).

Service in the restaurant was very slow for dinner. Food was average. Breakfast selection is very basic (tradition fry up), some dry looking ham (crusty around the edges), cereal and a small selection of sweet pastries.

There were two weddings on the Saturday night of our stay - unfortunately, Dunston Hall did not deem it necessary to clean the restrooms near the breakfast restaurant overnight, so they were in a right (disgusting) state in the morning. Perhaps best to use your own in the room despite it not being the cleanest?

For £68 per night (available on last minute deal website), this hotel is definitely acceptable, but if you were to pay full room rate of around £150 per night, you would feel hard done by. It is not a luxury hotel and not a proper 4 star hotel in our opinion. Tired looking, in need of better trained staff, a good refurbishment and generally a kick up the backside.

We stayed in a standard deluxe double room with en-suite bath. Also visited the spa for a full body massage, which again was average for £55 per person. The surrounding area is beautiful, and so are the hotel gardens, which initially give you a great sense of luxury, but as soon as you get through the doors of your bedroom, you know what you are in for.

To summarise, if you pay £63-£68 (last minute rates), this is good value. If you pay full room rate at £150+, you would regret it.

The hotel looks very grand and has a very warm and friendly atmosphere. The bathroom in our bedroom was mouldy and very dated - could really do with an update.

Staff were attentive. Good location for local attractions.

You had to queue for breakfast and staff were very rushed - so much so we got served cold tea!

Check out was also a pain as there were long queues.

In all, the hotel is nice and good for a budget UK break.

We were attending a wedding at the hotel & managed to secure a canellation at a very good rate. The room was fine but unfortunately the rooms are not sound proofed & with an abundance of stag & hen parties staying the night's sleep was not a good one.
The room however was good & the breakfast was super.

24 of us went here on a golfing break. Bedrooms and breakfast were good. Evening meals were poor quality and there was not enough to fill us up. On Saturday night they ran out of all the draft beer. We asked for some one to take our drinks order at 7.45 pm and it was 8.20 pm before we got our drinks. Would not go back. They advertise a crazy golf course which is in poor condition due to lack of maintenance .

Pros: Lovely location, not far from the Broads with a very good golf club. Good food and selection of and some lovely local walks. Good selection of drinks and some real ales on draught (although expensive at £4.50 a pint). Has an air of quality about the place and some excellent architecture.

Cons: Furniture tired in places. Staff either very helpful or not at all. Arrived to be told the room we booked wasn't available but we were given it after kicking up a fuss. Overcharged for the meal evening (although this was eventually sorted) and had to chase 3 times for complimentry wine.

Second time of staying here.
Got a really good deal with laterooms so treated ourselves to two nights away.
Nice location, lovely clean and spacious hotel.
Restaurant tasty but a little disappointed the menu was the time both nights staying at hotel. Thought the choices might have changed second evening.
Visited somerleyton castle, Cromer and great yatmouth...all within good driving distance of hotel.
