“Curates Egg 2”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2008

We have stayed at Park farm several times over recent years, as there are so few hotels in the area.
I am afraid that while they try hard they get it wrong too often for the prices they charge.
Also we have stayed there when they have had two weddings on the same night and it was clear that while they were happy to take our money we were not their prime concern,
I could write pages but to summarise
1. Prices are too high for the service delivered
2 Decor is 10 years out of date even for Norfolk!
3 Cooking is barely competent, except for Kippers at breakfast which are truly great
4 Staff try hard but there is no sign of management
As I said above they prosper because there are so few alternatives but will someone please open a good hotel in the area

There is so much to say that is positive about this hotel, which makes it all the more difficult to be negative.

The hotel is in a good location, just outside the small village of Hethersett and only a couple of miles from a very convenient and efficient park-and-ride service into the City of Norwich. The hotel staff are friendly and willing, the whole place is very clean and looking good after a fairly recent refurbishment, the free leisure facilities are excellent, rooms nicely furnished and our superior room enjoyed plenty of space. Free wi-fi internet service, courtesy of Norfolk County Council, was an unexpected bonus. The accommodation is provided outside the main building in a number of cottage-type buildings, in a mix of ground and first floor rooms of varying standards. This set up gives the hotel an unusual but nonetheless pleasing atmosphere, making the whole place feel like a small, friendly community.

The hotel has a sister property in the village, The Queen's Head pub, about a mile distant (Nice walk or there is a good local taxi service). Good food and value for money, perfect for families.

Before we detail our grievances let us say that this is not a cheap hotel (our party's bill was more than $3500) so we expect things to be right.

The negatives started and finished in the restaurant: There were no major disasters, just several little things that can make the difference between a memorable stay and a disappointing one. The range of choice was very impressive and promised a great deal, but the quality of cooking was pretty woeful and failed to live up to its billing. The chef has a tendency to over-cook the food (particularly meat, fish and pasta) - something we experienced several times; also the combinations in many dishes were not right for us, with chef's propensity to overuse tomato sauces on many dishes. The young, friendly and willing waiting staff seemed inexperienced and at times amateurish - something we put down to a lack of leadership from management.

Overall we liked the hotel but will not use the place again until we hear that the cooking has improved.

For years I`ve been searching for a decent base in Norfolk. Now I`ve found it!

The public areas are well maintained and the welcome I got was super - I was even shown to my room. The room was in a separate building but umbrellas are provided in case it rains. My room was on the first floor and had a small balcony overlooking the well maintained garden which had a huge fountain. The room contained all you need - and a complaint sheet to leave for housekeeping if anything didnt work. This also had a form at the bottom for housekeeping to leave comments telling you what they had done etc. You don`t find that very often.

The leisure facilities are very good indeed - well maintained and the pool was much larger than your average hotel.

Dinner can be taken in the bar or restaurant. Its the same menu but you don`t get full waitress service in the bar. The food was very nice though not exceptional. The service on the other hand was impeccable and the staff very friendly and helpful. They have obviously been well trained. The wine list is reasonably priced.

I stayed two nights. I booked the first direct with the hotel as they have a special deal on a Sunday. The second I booked through lastminute as it was much cheaper. I explained this to the hotel when I phoned them to book and there was no problem at all.

I will certainly be staying here again in the future.

  • Liked — Well trained staff
  • Disliked — Rather remote!

My husband and i had got married abroad and so decided to throw an evening party for friends and relatives. We were so pleased with the response from the wedding evening coordinator, she was fantastic and everything had been organised as requested.

We were a little disappointed that even though we had payed extra per head that the food was a just ! but even so the setting was great.

Our problem started when we awoke next morning and found that our room had been broken in to whilst we were asleep in it. We went to reception and explained but there was no real response from them. My husband had to call the police himself. At no time did anyone offer to give us another room or area to go to, so we were stuck in the room trying not to touch anything until the police came.

when the police came we were offered a drink but apart from the receptionist saying how awful it was we had no representative looking after us during this time.

We asked the receptionist if they could ask if people had seen anything as we had had wedding presents, cards, all our personal posessions such as keys, credit cards and unfortunately the camera and bag that contained all our films from both the wedding and reception. We believe that the hotel obviously did not want people to know because of all the guests we had staying no one even when checking out had been asked anything.

just to top it off the hotel would not sort out any of our loses either themselves or with their insurance, we ended up claiming from our own home insurance.

The only nice touch the hotel did was send a bunch of flowers but unfortunately this was not till after my mother had rung them and told them how disgraceful she thought they had behaved.

i think you can only judge a hotel by what happens out of the normal standards - this one fell very short

What a truely marvelous place, wonderful room, fantastic staff, good food and facilities. We asked for a quiet room with a spa bath if possible in the hotel's superior room range and was given a free upgrade to one of their executive rooms with 4 poster bed, spa bath, bath robes, sofa and all the little things that make a guest feel very welcome. The hotel has leisure facilities free for guests and i can't think of anything it was lacking.

It took a long time to write this review, but it is testiment to the place that the memory of our visit remains. Staff and service was excellent. We phoned ahead and asked for a bottle of white wine to be in the room when we got there, and they had delivered it in an ice bucket. Fantastic. For the remainder of the stay, the staff were all very friendly and helpful without exception, and nothing was too mch trouble. We did treat ourselves a Honeymoon suite, and it was well worth the money. The four poster bed and double jacuzzi bath made it very special. The leisure facilites were first class, and it is in the countryside, yet near a main town which suited our requirements (country walks, plus a bit of shopping). We also found an excellent pub around 1/2 mile along the main road (out of hotel entrance, turn right, on your left), unfortuneatly only on the day we were leaving! The food at the hotel was very nice, but our only gripe about the whole place was we found the resturant atmosphere a bit stark. They had the lighting all wrong, and it felt a bit like you were in a doctors waiting room. We did ask the waitress to dim the lights, but she said she was unable to, but she did light a candle for us on your table and appologised profusely. Shame as everything else about the place was excellent. Maybe we were being a bit too picky! Very nearly gave this one 5 out of 5, and in summary would definitely reccomend it, given that if, like us, you do not like the resturant, the excellent pub is a short walk away.
