“Magical”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

I stayed here a while ago but feel confident to write the review now because it was truly a very special place. I cannot wait to go back. It is wild, comfortable and everything I want from a bush camp.I can't speak highly enough of this magical spot and its wonderful host, Jenny. Steve was the guide when we were there and he went out of his way to ensure our stay was the best ever. We saw lion, a magical rhino greeting, hippo, elephant and so much more. We caught tiger fish, bream and laughed til we cried. We felt relaxed, priviliged and safe in the wild African bush. MAGICAL, MAGICAL,MAGICAL!

My family and I (4 adults and 2 teenagers, although it must be said some of the adults could be classified as teenagers) joined Jenny and Karl and team on Rhino Island for Christmas 2011.

The reason why I can write this review so clearly is because it sticks in my mind as one of my favourite experiences in the bush. And I have had many. The peaceful vista is sublime and the accommodations more than comfortable not to mention the food which was delicious, creative, flavourful (especially when you had caught the fish!) and fresh. From dozing on hot afternoons in your lodge you can idly watch the elephants in the mud baths by the shore. The bird life is spectacular, the fish eagles' cry accompanied our sundowners down on the shore. We were lucky enough to see one of the world's rarest big animals the black rhino and her calf. It was an incredibly moving experience and one that will stay with me forever. Thank you to our profesisonal guide Stephen for his patience and knowledge, you were a delight to walk and game view with.

Then Christmas day dawned and with that came our Christmas present. A pride of lions languishing right in front of our lodges in the shore in the morning light. It does not get better than this.

Thank you to Jenny, Karla and their excellent team. If only every Christmas could be this sublime. We felt so at home and part of something very special on this spit of land poking out into the mighty Kariba dam. It beats a noisy houseboat any day!

I would go back in a heartbeat and cannot recommend it enough.

I was with a friend in February 2013 in Rhino Camp. Funnyboy gave as a ride on the boat across the lake. It alone was an experience. With his boat he was flying over the lake. The Rangers Richard Steve are incredibly vigilent, charming, helpful and attentive. The welcome by our Hosts Jenny, Karl and Megan could have not been more welcoming and attentive. Our Ranger was Richard who was so knowledgeable he pointed out any Points of interest, even though it was pooring of rain. It did not matter at all. Our huts, guarded by elephants. A great experience. The tranquility of the world only there. Unfortunately, 2 days is far too little. The team has done great in the kitchen. The food was perfect. What more could you want. Rhino Camp and Rhino Camp again. Fantastically. Macht euch auf die Beine und reist von Deutschland nach ZIMBABWE Lake Kariba Rhino Camp!!!!. Sie werden es nicht bereuen. Thanks to all my friends out theire

We went to Rhino camp for 3 nights back in February 2013. I went with my Mum who was visiting Zimbabwe and indeed Africa for the first time. Jenny, Richard, Funnyboy and everyone else at the Rhino camp could not have been more welcoming and attentive to our needs.
The camp itself is in the most beautiful setting on the lake, waking up to elephants drinking from the water few metres from our hut was a treat. We saw lots of animals including buffalo, hyena, elephants, kudu, antelope plus many others and the birds were also amazing. Our guide Richard and funnyboy were incredibly knowledgable and passionate.
The food was delicious and plentiful and the huts and bathrooms are beautifully rustic with everything you need.
It was a once in a lifetime trip we will never forget. Hopefully we'll be back one day!

Christmas at Rhino island safari lodge is a time I will never forget. From our hosts Jenny, Karl and Megan who contributed so much to our enjoyment and included special touches for a Christmas in the bush, to our guide Stephen who was so knowledgeable and found rhino for us to see ( a real treat for my grandchildren who had never seen black rhino in the wild) to excellent food and incredible Kariba sunsets with sundowners . Best of all was the camaraderie and laughter as we were made to feel like royal guests and yet part of the family. The accommodation is perfect for the situation and climate and it was a real experience to be at elephant-back height with wonderful watching of these amazing animals so close. Even the 'Kalahari-Ferraris' (solfugidae?) set up great nightly entertainment for us. It was a memorable and highly enjoyable 5 days with Funnyboy also ensuring great fishing using his excellent knowledge of the lake. We recommend it highly. Fionna Willmot

Room Tip: They all have a great view but close to the elephant watering hole is very special.

From the time we boarded the boat in Kariba we were made welcome by our hostess Jenny and the staff who traveled over to Rhino with us. Any points of interest were pointed out and any questions we had were answered with obvious expertise, an indication of what to expect during our two night stay. The landing and unloading of our gear was well organised and the drive to the camp was made very interesting by Steve Chinhoyi, who was to be our guide for the duration of our stay. Once settled in our very comfortable bush huts, we enjoyed a lovely lunch. After an explanation of the rules of the camp and surrounds regarding the dangers from Elephants and Hippos, my friend and I prepared to go on our first game drive. What an experience the next four hours turned out to be and what an absolute pleasure it was to have Steve as our guide. Nothing was too much trouble for him and he was a mine of information on the birds and wildlife we saw. Back to camp for a sundowner around the campfire and a great meal under the stars. Because of the close proximity of the Elephants, Steve was required to provide an armed escort back to our huts, a unique experience for us. Sleeping in the open huts allowed us to view the Hippos and Elephants close up and I woke up in the early hours with an Elephant grazing next to my hut. Another first. The next day saw us (now a group of five) head out with Steve for a game drive/walk. We covered about 5 km mostly on foot and again, Steve was brilliant. His expertise and obvious love for the job was evident from the start. Having grown up in outback Australia I thought I knew everything there was to know about walking in the bush. It didn't take me long to realise that the African bush was entirely different and without Steve, I would have been in serious trouble. All in all a wonderful day. Another night around the campfire and all too soon it was time to head back to Kariba. Thank you Jenny, Steve and staff for an experience of a lifetime and something I will never forget.

Room Tip: The huts are all similar and located so that you have uninterrupted views of the lake and the wildli...

We have just returned from 5 days at Rhino Safari Camp and still very much regret having to leave even after the luxury of such an extended stay! We loved and appreciated every moment of our time there. From the comfortable beds, snuggled securely under the mosquito nets to the open walls of the rooms that allow you an uninterrupted view of the lake and the hot showers under the stars, we savoured it all. Nightly bush experiences consisted of the elephants "Spot" or "Jabulani" and their pals visiting the trees right next to our rooms for a snack, moonlight gleaming on their tusks as they fed. Jenny and her staff are most welcoming, they made everybody in our group feel at home and decidedly tearful when we had to leave. The meals were excellent and gave us more than enough energy for our photographic excursions into the wilderness of Matusadona National Park, expertly guided by Steve. The boat rides into the small rivers that we went on, again guided by Steve and captained by Pearson and Funnyboy were magic as we drifted on the mirror-clear water whilst the sun set in a blaze of colours. Even the nightly walk back to our rooms, escorted and guarded by Steve were adventures when the elephants came into camp earlier than usual and we had to take the "lakeshore walk" so as not to bump into them. All in all, Rhino Safari Camp is a destination that I will certainly return to as soon as I can and that I can unreservedly recommend to anybody who truly loves the African Bush and wants to immerse themselves deeply in the experience of it.
