“AMAZING, I recommend this place to everyone”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Traveling around West Africa, this was my favorite place I visited. That being said, this is a place for people who are backpacking around, looking for something laid-back, local and authentic. While the amenities are rudimentary, it's because you are staying way off the beaten path, on an island without any other tourism for miles. If that's what you're looking for, this is the place for you.
Dalton is one of the kindest people I've ever met, and he and his wife do everything they can to give you the best experience possible. The service is outstanding, the prices are extremely reasonable, and Dalton will cook up delicious pasta and vegetables, along with the best fish I've ever tasted, typically caught in the water right next to you as you boat in to the island. Throughout the day they bring you local fruit to try, and they're happy to take you on a walk through the village next door, if you're interested. The views are outstanding, and the experience is priceless. Round up a few friends, bring some cards and some speakers, and kick back in the hammocks with some beers by the water, and you may never want to leave.

The rooms here are very basic, with thatched huts sub divided by thatch screens into rooms. As a result you'd be able to see/hear anything going on in other rooms. However, the rooms here are really cheap at just over $10 a night, which means they have a proper cheap beach hut feel that is rare in usually expensive sierra leone. You do need to remember to take a torch as there are no lights in the rooms.

At night there is just the one electric light, so everyone eats around it including the owners, which is usually actually very nice but was uncomfortable on one occasion when I was reading by the light and they were having a small disagreement. It really was a small disagreement, nothing dramatic, but it was a bit uncomfortable and I really did think they ought to have been more careful in front of guests.

The location is great, overlooking a small cove. Whilst not as spectacular as beaches on the peninsular by some way, the sounds of the waves crashing on the small beach was very relaxing and you can borrow snorkelling gear. Whilst the beaches are better on the mainland, the feeling of escape from sailing to a tropical island is hard to beat, and you can have the beach to yourself quite easily.

Food is good value and decent, and service is generally good, if as ever in sierra leone it can be surprisingly difficult to attract attention given the number of staff milling around. The shared shower and toilet are kept reasonably clean and, to my surprise, the shower had hot water.

The owner Gregg was a decent chilled guy, maybe a bit too chilled, as I'd gone there to do some scuba diving but he had closed the dive centre early due to an early start to the rainy season. Fine, but he could have reopened it and made some easy money off me at$50 a dive, I didn't really buy that it would be a lot of work to reopen the dive centre, the boat was still running for fishing trips so it would just be a matter of unpacking the gear! In fairness, he thought visibility post the first rain was now poor, but compared to the uk diving I'm used too, it was still more than fine.

In summary though, whilst there are a few niggles, this is a good value relaxing place to stay in a beautiful location. 3/5 is actually a little harsh, but 4/5 would be over generous, if the trip advisor rating system was just a little more nuanced I'd be giving this a 7/10.

I'm giving this place five stars - not because it is a five-star resort, but because the service and scenery were top notch. Dalton and his wife Deborah are very accommodating - despite running a hotel that is pretty much cobbled together with what little money they have. They did everything they could to make sure our stay was comfortable, and the seafood meals and breakfast sandwiches were absolutely amazing. They also have a nice, quiet cove setting.

The rooms are not spectacular - very rustic as the guide book warned us. I am used to staying at more upscale places, but didn't mind the rooms because everything else was done right and the hosts were friendly and welcoming. I think my view of this place is biased based on the lunch I had over at Banana Islands Guest House (BIGH). The worst two hours of my three-day trip was spent at the BIGH: mediocre food, crap service, and basically just a bunch of guys sitting around looking glum while rich people came up in speed boats to grab a beer and talk too loud. If you want peace and quiet and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, head over to Dalton's.

I think over time (as Dalton gets more money), the rooms and grounds will improve. But if you are going to Banana Islands, you really only have two options - I would always choose Dalton's...
