We had a trip to the lake of Zaros where we found a road to Eleonas. We didn't know what is that place, but we were curious, went there, and found a little paradise. So we decided to have a lunch there. After it we decided to stay at Eleonas for two days, - and finally we stayed there for five fantastic days...
The land is beatiful, all the cottages are in the middle of the olive wood, there are many huge mountains, sheeps, cicalas and ofcourse the quietness… We advise you to take a trip to the Rouvas Gorge which is much more beatiful than Samaria or Imbros Gorge. We have never seen a fabulous land like this.
We took part of a cooking lesson with Manolis’s mum, who is the best cook of the world! We loved her food which was very delicious: soutzukakia, padakia, tirikeftedes, keftedakia, and the end of all our dishes: the raki with honey and cinnamon…
So, summarily the lovely cottages, the swimming pool, the taverna with the fantastic traditional food, and ofcourse the very polite and friendly staff were the reasons why we love Eleonas. Manolis is a fantastic guy, who always has smile on his face! We are very happy to know him.
If you want to spend unforgettable, relaxing days, choose Eleonas!

Efharistoume, Manolis!

See you next year,
Lia and Laszlo

The hotel is unique, the surrounding is amazing. the rooms are very comfortable, spacious, and clean, the landscape from the windows and the balcony is magnificent. The food in the restaurant is delicious. But the place is not for young kids; we visited the hotel with young children, 4 years old and a baby and could not stay. The rooms are on a mountains slope, long steps to walk between the rooms and the restaurant, the pool or the playground. Very inconvenient with trolley
we might return in few years, when the kids will grow.

This summer we arrived at Heraklion airport at 09:15pm. It was dark but still warm. We picked up our little rental car and went for a ride to Eleonas. It was already dark and we were prepared for an one hour drive. We took the mainroad to Zaros village in the southern part of Crete. After around half an hour, the TomTom lady voice instructed us to take the first road on our right hand, so we did. It took just a little while when the asphalt turned into an unpaved tracking path. What to do? We continued : “It could not be very far from now”. The narrow way went up in the mountains, at our left hand we assumed to see (it was very dark) canyons, at our right hand we saw rocky mountains. To shorten a long story: after an off road trip of three quarters of an hour the path became that narrow that we couldn’t pass anymore. Turning the car was hardly possible, but we did, and then we were trapped! The way back was too hard for our 1000cc Fiat Panda . What to do in (already) the middle of the night. We called our travel agent. She contacted Manos, the owner of the Eleonas resort, who immediately started a rescue operation. We appreciated his tranquilizing telephone call in which he told us it was a miracle! He had seen the headlights of our car in the mountains. But it still took almost an hour before he had found us with his 4x4 Jeep Wrangler. Luckily he succeeded. With a lot of effort because it wasn’t easy, our car needed some extra help with the steep road backwards. He guided us through the mountains to his resort where we arrived at around 02:00am. A better host then Manos isn’t possible. Manos is our hero, thank you!! Henk & Jacqueline.

After some anxious moments due to the temporary petrol shortage following a truckers strike in August '10, we arrived late at night at Eleonas.

General manager Manos was already expecting us, and offered us a warm welcome by parking our car (the steep slope can be a challenge on your first day in Crete) and carrying our suitcases to our cottage. That proved to be an example of both the perfectionist attitude of Manos and his loyal team, as well the hospitality of this part of Crete.

The resort offers a mix of traditional cottages and hotel-like service. That includes daily cleaning of the cottages and changing of bed linen and towels, plus a luxurious breakfast. Most food is (traditionally) self-made, and homegrown where possible. That freshness and sincerity are the only secret ingredients in the Cretan Diet can be checked by following one (or more, when you stay 3 weeks like us) cooking lessons - fun and tastefull!

If you're into bungee jumping and disco parties, you're in for a disappointment. We however were looking for a relaxed time, and found it. It must have been one of our most relaxed holidays ever. Everything comes together: the broad mountain view, the cosy swimming pool, the authentic surroundings, the friendly staff and great dinners.

The location seems a bit in the middle of nowhere, but proves to be a perfect base for exploring central Crete (e.g. Phaistos, southern beaches or even Heraklion itself).

We can reccommend Eleonas to anyone looking for relaxation and authentic Crete, and like to thank Manos and his team for a wonderfull time!

We had a wonderful time in a peachful stone cottage just a few minutes drive from Zaros. Ideally set for many excursios to the southern and central areas of Heraklio and Rethymno. The staff were very polite and helpful. The food at the restaurant was excellent. Manolis, the owner, is very friendly and knows everything about the suround area so he can give the best advices of were to go or visit.
The best choice for a memorable visit to Crete.

As soon as my wife and I arrived at Eleonas we had a warm welcoming from Manos, the owner, and a great meal of cretan food. Then we discovered our cottage, 1 of the 20 little houses of Eleonas, made of stone but with air conditioning and jacuzzi, s'il vous plait! It's located down the mountains of Zaros, and the landscape is really charming. I remember the cicadas in olive trees, the lamb bells, the smell of many mountain herbs... The food from the tavern was truely traditionnal, fresh and tasty ( I personnaly recomand the lamb ribs, so good it makes you think you never ate lamb before). And a lot of great home made products ( bread, butter, jam, wine... and of course OLIVE OIL!) There is quality facilities, great swimming-pool, wifi access. All the staff is really nice and pay attention to your needs.

I really enjoyed my journey, it was a perfect place for our honeymoon. I highly recommand Eleonas for couples or families who are looking for peace and authenticity, and want to discover real cretan welcoming. I think it is a really clever way to deal with tourism, offering a high level of service for costumers, and preserving landscapes and traditions at the same time, sharing them with tourists instead of building up a concrete hotel and a fast-food for them.

Life was very sweet at Eleonas, I'm sure I'll go back there. It's a place that deserve to be discovered. For the beauty, for the service, and most of all for the deep friendly spirit of this place.

Julien
