“The Best Resort in Kaluk !!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2014

We went to Kaluk in September & it was a wonderful experience at Ghonday Village Resort. The staff was very polite, the views were amazing from the cottage & the food was very tasty. Very peaceful location with lovely scenic views. Its also located on top of the other resorts, thereby the views are much better. You can enjoy the stunning views of Kangchenjunga from the bed itself !!! A must stay resort if you visit Kaluk.

Ghonday resort is a nice little resort in nice little Kaluk. We reached Ghonday on a chilly December afternoon from New Jalpaiguri railway station. Mr. Gurung the ever efficient manager arranged for a car to pick us up from the station. Though the journey is uneventful, the road condition was bad due to the road widening work that is going on.
The resort is located on a slope so you have to climb down from the main road. Though cars reach up to the resort it’s a steep climb up and down by foot if you want to go for a stroll in the Kaluk market. However, in the December winter that little exercise actually kept us warm and help digest the wonderful homely cooked food we had at Ghonday. There is a nice family feeling once you reach the resort as you will be greeted by the traditional scarf (khada) and tea. The staff is all local and ever smiling. I would like to take the name of Sonu who was always there to help us. There are around 12 rooms in the resort at present and construction is going on to add 12 more. The suites are located in the main building and the rest are cottages spread around the resort at different levels of a slope. Most of the rooms have a view of the mountain range from their window or balcony. We stayed in the Narsing cottage and the room was big with a clean bathroom with all creature comforts. The dining hall is located in the main building though you can order food at your room also. There is a small lawn in front of the dining room where you can have breakfast in the sun or enjoy a bonfire in the evening. The food served by the kitchen is fresh, homely and very tasty. We also tried the local drink Thumba/Chang in the restaurant though I quite did not like the taste.
We went for a sightseeing trip to nearby Pelling and Paymyangtse by a vehicle arranged by Mr. Gurung. The rates were also quite reasonable. There is nothing to do much in Kaluk except soaking in the mountain view and nature. There is a small bazar in Kaluk where you will get yummy momos and thukpas and some cheerful people to give you company. If you love the mountains and its people and do not have a set agenda go to Kaluk and stay at Ghonday. You will not be disappointed.

Thanks to Tripadvisor and other reviewers. The best place to stay in Kaluk. We stayed in the Koktang Cottages for 3 nights during January,2014. The Cottage was really spacious, well furnished, neat and clean. It also has electric kettle, tea/coffee bags. This cottage have the breathtaking view. You can enjoy the majestic view of the Mt. Kanchendjonga from the bed and balcony. The hotel stuffs were really professional and quick to respond. Beds and Blankets were also clean and comfortable. Food is superb and also value for money. Try their Chicken Sandwiches, Chinese Menus and Chicken Fingers :). A big room heater has been given to us which made the room really warm and comfortable.

For sight-seeing took a share cab (white Alto, Wagonr) to Rinchenpong. The fare is only 20 INR. Go to the Monastry in the upper hill, 20-25 mins walking distance and Rabindra Smriti Bhaban which is another 15 mins away. There is a wine factory 6-7 Km away from Rinchenpong(~500 INR reserved). We avoided the poison lake as during winter there was no water in the lake.

Ghonday is superb and we will visit again.

Room Tip: Koktang Cottage for honeymoon couples. It has the best view compare to other cottages.

The warm welcome at the Ghonday Village Resort, Kaluk, Sikkim, with presenting the white scarf in the traditional manner of the Himalayan Hills swept us from our feet at the end of a 6 hours travel from Bagdogra airport, Siliguri. Checkin formalities were simple & fast followed by a warm cup of tea.

Our stay at the resort from 24th November, 2013, till 4th December, 2013, was an experience we shall always recall with fond memories. The staff members were ever eager to make our stay comfortable. We stayed in the room named 'kanchendzonga' which was fairly big & quite well kept with descent furniture & wardrobe. The bed was soft & comfortable, blankets were very warm & cosy. One can also get room heater on demand & payment of extra charge. Bathroom was spacious with excellent fittings & dedicated Geyser & had 24 hrs hot/cold running water. There were 2 more rooms on the 1st floor & all three had unobstructed view of the kanchendzonga range.

It was an experience to view kanchendzonga slowly emerging from darkness & turning into a golden peak when the first ray of sunlight hits at dawn around 5:30 am & all that while one is sipping a hot cup of tea or coffee seating at the coffee table in the warmth of the room.

The other thing I enjoyed in the resort was the evening log fire, which is lit on the lawn against payment of extra charge. Sofas & tables are provided around the fire & one can spend a couple of hours seating around the fire chatting & sipping beverages.

Although the resort has a wide array of items in the menu list, actual availability is limited. Never the less, food is good & tasty with minimum use of oil & spices. I liked the item 'Chicken Local Style' very much & would recommend same to non-veg guests.

It is recommended for guests to book taxi thru the resort for full/half day local sight seeing to avoid paying extra.

However it was cheaper for me to book my transit between Bagdogra Airport to Kaluk & back to Bagdogra Airport by car (Innuva/Xylo) thru Nature Beyond Pvt Ltd. Email ID kolkata@east-himalaya.com Telephone (Mobile) +91 9733300696, (Land Line) 033 40607055. I paid Rs 7000/- for the round trip.

Mr. Chaman Gurung, Resident Manager, Ghonday Village Resort is extremely helpful & polite and can be contacted for booking & all other necessary assistance. Contact details : ghonday.resort@gmail.com, ghondayvillageresort@ymail.com Mobile: 09593979695 Website: www.ghondayresort.com

The owner of Mr. Devi P. Gurung, Ghonday Village Resort is an extremely cordial person & visits the resort on weekends. He makes it a point to interact with the guests to understand if there is any short comings & whether the stay is a pleasurable one or not. Contact details: Mobile : 09933001121

My stay at the resort was an extremely good experience & would recommend all to stay at this resort for a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Do carry a binocular for better view of Kanchandzonga Range & preferably book any of the rooms i...

I visited Kaluk in the first week of November. The journey from NJP to Jorethang was like a nightmare. It took almost six hours to cover a distance of 80 kms.The condition of the road from Jorethang to Kaluk(34 kms) was much better though full of sharp hairpin turns. When we reached Kaluk at around 6-30 pm we were completely exhausted. But once we checked in, the warm hospitality of the staff rejuvenated us.
The general standard of the rooms in this resort was a pleasant surprise as due to our past experience (this was my 6th visit to Sikkim),we didn't expect such spacious, well furnished & comfortable rooms and that too at very reasonable rates.Starting from bathroom sleepers to umbrella everything was neatly arranged. Unlike most of the hotels/resorts in Sikkim, the quality of the food served at the small but cozy restaurant was really good. Every staff in this resort is very helpful & courteous, especially Chaman & Suneeta.
The location of the resort is also fantastic. One can enjoy the stunning view of Kanchenjunga & other peaks from the rooms & cottages. If you are not a "sightseeing" type of tourist this resort is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the scenic & serene ambience of Kaluk

Last week i along with my wife was on week long sikkimm trip.Just 1 day before our journey was going to start i added kaluk as 1st destination and GVR for over night stay. And that 1 day was the best day of our trip.Kaluk is a very small village in west sikkim. The road from Siliguri ti Kaluk was in terrible condition but the driver provided by the GVR was very promp and courteous and good in driving to.After reaching kaluk we forget everything of the journey seeing the beauty of kaluk and the resort.1st we were given a traditional welcome by the hotel staffs.Staffs were so prompt and always trying to give us any type of service. As its a homestay rather than a full fledged resort so we were to tell little early what we want to eat and they prepared on given time.Taste of the food was simply great,we had a lunch ,dinner and breakfast and everything was simply great. In dinner we wanted to eat something sikkimise and they made a great sikkimes meal.Rooms were spacious and good view of kanchenjanga. Bathroom was clean. It was just a five star service at reasonable rate.Next time whenever get time i will visit GVR for atleast 2-3 nights. Hatts off to Mr Gurung and his team.
Only one thing goes negative-The rates of vehicle for sight seeing or transfer is little bit high.

Ghonday Village resort in Kaluk, West Sikkim, has to be one of the most friendly hotels in India. The staff, including the owner Mr Gurung, are ever-smiling and ready to help you.

It took us a bone jarring 6 hours from Bagdogra airport (near Siliguri) to get to the hotel, but the hotel's recommended driver Daniel made the journey as comfortable as possible by driving very safely. Once we got to the hotel, we were greeting with a welcoming cup of tea, and everything just flowed from there.

The rooms and bathrooms are well maintained. The Kanchenjungha room has the best view, but the cottages in the front are more spacious and modern. Facilities are more than adequate for a place as remote as Kaluk (hot water, comfortable bedding, cable TV, heater in room on request), and the made to order food is simple but tasty. Yes, you have to order a couple of hours in advance, but they will happily serve you in your room at your chosen time. The momos (dumplings) were especially delicious, but everything down to the hand made chapatis (flatbread) were excellent.

And nothing beats the view. When we opened the front curtains on a cold and sunny March morning from our cottage, the snow clad himalayas with the majestic Kanchenjungha in the center seemed close enough to reach out and touch. Stunning !

Kaluk itself is a sleepy little place, with little to do but take long walks around the hilly roads and trails. If you are interested in the touristy stuff, Pelling is less than two hours away, with a few nice stops along the way.

If you are in this part of the world, visit Kaluk and stay at Ghonday for a couple of quiet nights. You will not regret it.

Room Tip: Pick the cottages in the front, which are more expensive but very comfortable. They have great views...
