4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2014

After reading previous reviews I was slightly concerned as we had booked this hotel 12 months ago. I was a little dubious about the hotel and had reservations on landing. We did have a problem with the taxi and didn't have the best start to our holiday, but we were greeted with welcome drinks and it all faded away. After booking in we were met by a porter to take our bags to our room. We were in 2 of the hotel rooms - one king sized for my partner and myself and the other and 2 double bedded room for our son and partner's father; we were also travelling with a group of 7 other people. The room sizes were very good and each room had a fantastic bathroom with double bath. Plenty of storage space, television, coffee maker and fridge. We were in the Bourganville rooms (177 and 178) both overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Air con was excellent everywhere in the hotel. Quite a big resort on a peninsula with Mamora Bay one side and Atlantic the other. Mamora bay very calm and safe for swimming, plenty of sunloungers (don't bother taking towels provided by the hotel and you can even take on exercusions. Plenty of watersports on offer - some you pay for. Tennis courts where rackets and balls provided free of charge. Gym seemed well stocked. Daily activities for adults. Children's club available. Dive centre on site. Taxi's booked by hotel and a set charge for return journey you just tell driver what time you want to be picked up. Docksider (buffet), Rainbow (breakfast and a la carte evening) and Coco restaurants (a la carte) both a la carte require booking in advance. When we arrived the Rainbow was closed and we were able to use Piccolo Mondo (Italian) free of charge usually $35 dollars surcharge. There were some issues with overcrowding in the Docksider and I think this is why Piccolo's was opened up free of charge but congratulations to the staff who really earned their money that evening. There are also pool bars and a lounge bar. Golf buggies to ferry you around if you don't want to walk anywhere. Small gift shop. Coco's service 'it and miss' and staff unfriendly but all others excellent and all catered for our large group of 11 people. Grounds very pretty and well maintained. You can drink the tap water at this resort. I won a Spa treatment and I can thoroughly recommend the Tranquility Spa, plenty of treatments on offer and quite reasonably priced. Only real negative Wi-Fi connection but if you are on holiday you can argue why is it required. Catamaran trip excellent well worth the money. Don't miss Shirley Heights on a Sunday night an excellent evening's entertainment. Nelson's Dockyard another must do. St John's for duty free not a big town but we were lucky enough to see a cruise liner docked and it was buzzing. Antigua is great to visit not a big island not much to see or do and be warned you are in the Caribbean and life is very slow. It was very hot and a few wet days were had but overall the weather was fantastic. Would I return again/recommend - most definitely. Would have got 5 stars apart from Wi-Fi and some staff who didn't appear to want to be there. Well done to Alfred, brings drinks buggy round on beach's (who I think must be a celebrity as he is quite well known), Dorothy in the Docksider and Rainbow and to the many other staff who made our trip very enjoyable. Also the taxi drivers, used by the resort, who do a great job.

Room Tip: Rooms on Atlantic side cooler.

After reading some of the reviews - I was somewhat concerned regarding the resort but it was fine. Fasia with customer service was outstanding and don't miss the Tranquility Spa - receptionist is great and a massage with Linda was stellar. The only issue I had was as a single person having to pay the 2 person charge....You're missing a population that would be ready to visit!

We're a family of 3 with an 8 year old daughter in tow who stayed at St James Club this late July. I'd recommend this hotel unreservedly considering the assumed budget range . There are some caveats and I'll mention the negatives first : one of the restaurants began a renovation during our stay which meant the premium restaurant Piccolo Mondo suspended its surcharge and introduced a first come first serve booking system . This involved turning up at 6.30 am to be told somehow there were no vacancies. This led to considerable disruption and ultimately was only resolved under guest protest. Aside from that the service can seem a little unfriendly and lethargic but you start to accept this is the Caribbean way and actually in the buffet restaurants especially it's fine. The resort itself has excellent water sports activities, the Catamaran trip is worth forking out for and most of the other options are free . The setting is fantastic, pools are great, Gym in good shape and the Dive Centre is superb , I had a great day out on the reefs , diving options around Antigua look great on my experience. Everything on the doorstep , car hire, good sights and worth a trip around this fascinating Island. Last moan, Wi-fi pretty unserviceable but we had a great time and I'd recommend as long as you can accept less than top notch service.m

Room Tip: Go for the Beachfront apartments in the papaya/ pineapple or mango section for wonderful balcony vie...

Dear Valued Guests,

Thank you for choosing St. James's Club Antigua for your family vacation. We value very much the opinion of our guests, as this is one of the many ways in which we improve on our offerings, and we appreciate the recommendation to your friends and family.

We are pleased to know that you enjoyed our resort, activities and facilities, however, it is disconcerting that you endured some inconveniences during the restaurant renovation process. We are sorry that you did not experience the St. James's Club's consistent genuine hospitality which we are known for, especially since we have earned a reputation as one of the most fun Caribbean resorts with a very friendly and accommodating staff.

Our management team carefully reviews all comments and feedback, and will make appropriate steps moving forward.

Please know that it is our goal to deliver a very memorable vacation and hope that we may once again host you and exceed your expectations.

Kind regards,
Guest Ambassador

St James Club is an ideal resort to get to know Antigua. It has the advantage of a gentle sandy beach in the lagoon with plenty of watersports and an ocean facing beach with some great snorkelling. Dress code used to be very strict but nowadays smart shorts and a collared short are acceptable in all the restaurants except the Piccolo Mondo which still insists on long trousers with a collared shirt, but well worth the effort as the ambience is wonderful and the food delicious - and the view is exquisite. Other restaurants have a wide selection of food available, The Docksider has a themed buffet most nights, The Rainbow serves a la carte and Cocos is primarily family oriented - so something for everyone. The delightful Alfred with the smiley face is always welcome as he trundles along the beaches in his drinks cart and has the most amazing memory for his customers' favourite. This was our seventh visit and we still loved every minute.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the villas with friends but I understand all the rooms are very good

Spent one week on the island me and my family. The receptionist that met us on the first day was very lovely. I also met another young lady at the reception desk who went above and beyond to help us. The food was ok some nights better than some. Shopping was OK. I did not meet one staff member who was not friendly.

In July this year we returned to SJC for the 7th time this time in our own timeshare at the SJC Village. All I can say is that for us it gets better every time. fantastic value for money and just like returning home for our yearly holiday. So that you can judge us as well as the resort we were Mom and Dad early 60's professionals very active taking maximum advantage of the Gym, water aerobics, sailing, fishihg, water sports, other sporting activities off site such as segway at Fort James etc. Teenaged son aged 16 all well travelled. Also accompanying us this year in the villa another couple mid 50's and mid 60's active partakers of all that going. At home in the UK we all like living life and get on with most people.

So the good points
Virgin Atlantic flight was very good as usual.
The new chef at SJC has made a difference since coming last December and the food is good and varied including the themed buffets
Our beachside villa was superb
95% of the staff are great and very friendly particularly when you realise that many have to get up at 5.00am to get the bus to work.
Watersports staff are very good and helpful if you need free lessons to sail etc - best I have met in the caribean
The verandah catarmaran trip with captain joseph and his team is a highlight.
Drinks are good quality international brands - beer can be a little dull unless you get it by the bottle from Alfred - great guy read about him elswhere.
The managemnt team Antoine Jeff etc are always on hand to help and we have never had a reasonable request that has not been met
Fishing from the dock for small jacks and snapper - brilliant use the breakfast sausage
The gym is very well equipped and spotlessly clean
Food available all day 11.00 to 11.00pm if you go out and miss lunch or dinner
Lots of return guests (one had been 20 times) so you get to meet old friends including the staff
Very little bad behavior from guests of all ages
Picolo Mundo worth a vist for that special night out.

Bad Points

For the price that you pay I cant think of any but my wish list would be
A foosball table in the games room please Jeff
Permission to take a hobie cat beyond the bay (I wish even if escorted)
Coming home is definitely the worst part.
The new Antigua airport should be finished next year.

All in All SJC still delivers for us and the huge amount of people who return year after year we are proud to support Mr Barratt, Matt Keen, Antoin Jeff and all the staff. Yes a few can be grumpy but hey so can I.

So have a look at the reviews and judge for yourselves. The SJC is not an international 5 star hotel, it does claim to be and it doesnt charge as one so it shouldnt be judged as one. It is in my humble opinion one of the best hotels that we have been to for value, friendliness, honesty and a great holiday. Missing it all already and preparing for the next trip.

Room Tip: Reefdeck rooms are good at an upgrade and the Royal Suites are also special.

This resort has really been working on its food quality and this year they have got it just right. The entertainment has also improved with regular beach parties with music, food and drinks all served on the beach. The staff are friendly and the accommodation is very nice.
All in all we had a fantastic time. We would recommend for families of all ages.
