“14 Years and counting - steady improvements - ideal family & couples getaway”

We picked St. James's Club in Antigua in 2000, purely by chance. We have since purchased 4 weeks of timeshare, and have enjoyed some 30 weeks of vacation here, both with friends and with family. The Barrett Family has continually re-invested in the property - and it shows!
Villas, suites and rooms have been well maintained and improved, restaurants have a very decent quality of food, and the various amenities have been improved.
This is a very safe and comfortable base for our Antiguan vacations.

Room Tip: We buy a few groceries to make our stay more convenient; favourite beverages and snacks, mostly. Vi...

We've just returned from our half term trip with our 13 year old son. It was our first time at this resort, although we have visited other islands. All in all it was ok... the hotel was very quiet and there were not many children in the resort (a surprise for half term week). The food was fine, but was mostly buffet.. The Docksider restaurant is by far the nicest as it is open air and next to the sea, but it was buffet all week. Rainbows had 2 a la carte nights, but this is where you eat breakfast and lunch and is mostly indoors so we didn't want to eat there in the evenings. Coco's is open for lunch and evening but it lacks atmosphere (ie. no-one went there!) and the food was a set menu of ribs, burgers and fish and chips all week. We also found the drinks options during the day at the beach bars extremely limited. It was basically limited to beer, fruit punch and rum punch and everything came 'ready made' out of a jug. There were no bananas or fresh fruit in sight to make smoothies etc which was a shame. Lunch at the beach bar was also very limited, burger, chicken burger or hot dog and the area to eat it in is a few table and chairs thrown together. If only they had some music playing and more food and drinks options this could be a real lively place as it's next to the water sports and there are always people around. Most lunch times we had to visit the indoor restaurant so we could get salads etc. Our large beachfront room was lovely and we enjoyed playing tennis every day and the 4pm volleyball sessions were great fun. I have to say though that although most of the staff in the restaurants were extremely friendly, some of the bar staff could be really quite rude. You get the feeling they don't enjoy their jobs (although with the limited drink options available they don't have much scope to!). This is a beautiful looking resort and the beaches are lovely, but the lack of food and drink options compared to other hotels we have visited means we probably wouldn't stay here again.

Room Tip: Beachfront rooms were great with lovely large balconies with direct access onto the beach, although...

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your comments about your recent stay at St. James's Club. We value the gift of feedback as a way to continuously improve our guests experience.

The vast majority of our guests truly enjoy every aspect of the resort which we know from our guest reviews and online forums.

The St. James's Club has 4 distinct restaurants dotted throughout the resort serving a wide variety of international and local favorites. In addition, there are four lounges and bars opened throughout the day and evening. While we understand that dining is subjective there is something for everyone.

We do hope that when you are seeking a sun-filled memorable Caribbean vacation we can once again welcome you.

St James Club had some highs and lows. The food was very ordinary and unimaginative at times. In particular the themed nights were not up to the standard that I would expect or had enjoyed at other Caribbean destinations. We visited during low season so all of the restaurants were not open daily but that is completely understandable. The service in particular with client services and rainbow restaurant was really hit and miss. Sometimes we were made to feel that we were a nuisance rather than a paying client. A number of the client services team left a lot to be desired one particular lady who was pregnant was downright rude and other members of the team appeared to think that talking at you quickly snd loudly was the answer to our enquires, as well as the "come back tomorrow" line. Piccolo Monde was the best eating experience by far. Pearl was an absolute delight wherever we met her and all of the staff at the fountain bar near the royal suites were great. In particular Denisha. Carlos on the beach was a joy and the cart idea for drinks was a terrific. We had only been at the hotel for a week when jelly fish started to turn up which spoilt an otherwise perfect beach experience but this is a
natural phenomenon so no fault of the hotel. The Royal Suites room we upgraded to was fabulous and so worth the upgrade. We flew with British Airways which was great but on arriving at the hotel and meeting Virgin clients we were dismayed to learn of the mirade if deals that the Virgin clients were enjoying included in their holiday price. Three visits to piccolo monde, free catamaran trip and cash amount to spend in the hotel. So if your a UK visitor keep this in mind. We saw some of the island which is pretty but ran into a lot of beggars when we travelled
independently.

We stayed at the Club for a week in December 2012. The setting is lovely, with ground floor units opening right on the beach. Staff was friendly but spread thin. Several days our room was not cleaned until almost 5 pm. Breakfast service was exceedingly slow. Can't imagine how they cope with holidays when they're full. Dinner buffets were average, but the a la carte dining was fine. Rooms are adequate but dated and needing a rehab, with a very large bathroom....nothing spectacular but who spends that much time in the room? Bar service was nice, as was the drinks service on the beach. Attention beer drinkers: there's only one type beer available (Wadadli, the local Antiguan brew) so if you're looking for brewing variety you won't find it here. The beach on the ocean side was very nice....lots of seaweed, but it was cleaned diligently every day. The bay side is extremely hot, with litttle/no shade, so we spent no time there.

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor beach front room.

Another great visit to St James, each time we visit there are always improvements. New addition this time was the Spa which offered enjoyable treatments in beautiful surroundings.
St James is not the most glamorous and modern resort we have visited but it makes up for it in charm and the staff are fantastic always so pleased to see you on return and welcome you like family. It just has something you can't quite put your finger on it! We just keep going back, our last visit being in 2011 on approaching the hill going down to the resort it's like coming home!

Two fantastic beaches one with a lovely breeze which offers a welcome break to the heat, plus the added bonus of Alfred delivering chilled drinks from his golf buggy, right to your sunbed, the other side of the offers a calm bay most suitable for children.
We stayed from 4th till 18th Oct and these weeks are perfect it's not too busy and on most of the photos I have taken all my friends have asked " were you the only ones there?"
We are a couple without children so love the fact that there is a pool for adults only, which is three tiers, often we had this area to ourselves!

We had a fantastic view of the ocean from our suite which every time you see takes your breathe away it's so beautiful.

Thank you to all the staff at St James who again made us feel welcome and offered us a wonderful relaxing break.

Antigua is a wonderful island with lots of history - Nelson's Dockyard is about 10 mins from the hotel and a fantastic place to visit so much to see all the old buildings as they were years ago.
I can thoroughly recommend the swimming with Stingrays trip it's a little freaky getting into the shallow water to start with but they are so beautiful and lovely to see them swimming in a natural environment.

If you have any questions on St James or Antigua please feel free to contact me for more information.

We booked this trip last minute and we're so glad we did. We have only been on one other all-inclusive holiday which was to Sicily which we didn't enjoy. However we loved everything about St James's Club and would definitely like to go back next year!

We had a beachfront room which, although it could have done with a lick of paint, was very spacious and had everything you could need. We spent most of our time on the beach in front of the room eagerly awaiting the drinks cart which came round quite promptly from 10 o clock every day. The grounds were beautifully maintained and a pleasure to walk around. Both beaches were fantastic with plenty of activities for all.

We really enjoyed the food. I tend to eat only fish so was we'll catered for. Hats off to all the chefs who worked very hard to put on a fabulous buffet every day. (One of them is a dead-ringer for Morgan Freeman). Also enjoyed a night at Picolo Mondo. The choice of drinks was excellent and all good quality.

We only ventured out one day when we took a taxi to English Harbour/Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights where the views are fantastic.

Overall had a really fantastic and very relaxing holiday. Can't recommend St James's Club highly enough. All the staff work very hard and it would be difficult to single anyone out. The security staff were ever present but very discrete so thank you to those guys too. We felt very safe whilst staying there. Definitely would return!

Room Tip: Ground Floor Beachfront Rooms are the best!

My husband and I recently returned from a 1 week stay at the St. James club with our 16mo son. We are seasoned travelers, although perhaps not resort snobs; we enjoy traveling all over the area we are visiting rather than confining ourselves to the resort in which we are staying. Overall, the trip was fantastic, and most complaints stem from the inadvisable decision to travel with a toddler.

We found the wait staff to be quite helpful; everyone was cheerful and prompt.

We enjoyed our beachfront room. Sure, it was not brand new, but it has aged well and did not look strangely dated. The room was substantially larger than what you tend to find elsewhere in the Caribbean. We loved the beds and all slept like babies, perhaps because we were keeping to a baby's schedule. But seriously, the walkout beach was great!

The pools were amazing. The kiddie pool was probably the nicest kiddie pool I've ever seen; it was incredibly clean, part sun/part shade, and not too small or shallow. As no one else frequented this pool, my husband, baby, and I spent most of our pool time there. We enjoyed sneaking away to the 3 layer adult pool (which was more fun) when the grandparents were watching the baby, but I would not have minded spending all my time in the kiddie pool.

The ocean was also quite nice. There were a few jellyfish when we arrived, which I'm sure can't be helped, but they were the non-stinging variety so there were always several people happily enjoying the ocean. My husband enjoyed snorkeling out to the reef, although it was a good 70m or so from the beach.

The scenery was beautiful. We loved walking around.

The food was pretty good. We are food snobs, so this wasn't the best food we've ever had in our lives but... it was way better than cruise food or cafeteria food. We did not try piccolo mondo, since we did not want to pay extra money for a slow and tedious meal with our baby. The other places sometimes had themed meals, which fortunately we were able to enjoy (such as Thai, bbq, etc). I think the secret to good food was to always order the fish (remember, the ocean is right there), order the greek salad at coco's, and try a tiny taste of everything to find what you like if you're not sure.

We are definitely planning on coming back -- perhaps even making this an annual trip! The value during the off-season was great.

As an aside, we ran into phillicj (~5 posts down) while on vacation. And, as someone who has stayed in an overwater bungalow in Sofitel, Bora Bora, I cannot understand where they got all their bad impressions from. Yes, I have stayed in fancier hotels.. but I also paid out the rear end for them. And I will add, these Canadians were more than slightly annoying on the trip....
