“Excellent Service - Fantastic Wedding”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2010

Our family held my daughters wedding here last week, which included some of the party staying at the hotel. James and his team couldnt have been more helpful and the whole event went very smoothly from start to finish. They were attentive and made everything look really special. They also allowed us to add the extra touches ourselves instead of insisting that they provide them at additional cost. We had almost the total run of the hotel and nothing was too much trouble.

The food for the wedding party was equal to that I have had elsewhere for a lot more money. The cost of the wedding breakfast and buffet was as reasonable as it can be when the word "wedding" comes in to the equation.

Yes James and his wife do need to address some of the issues that occur when you are managing a business within a very old and demanding building and there are some areas that could do with a lick of paint and freshening up. However, the family atmosphere that exists here, far outweighs any minor cosmetic work that needs to be done. If I were to give one tip to the owners it would be to update their website and make sure that it is kept updated as they are most probably missing a lot of bookings due to it not being kept updated with all the latest news.

Thank you for all your help in making my daughter and now son in law's day so special.

We stayed here in March 2010 as were visiting friends in the area. We were checked in by the owner who was fantastic. As we had our son with us he carried all our luggage from the car up to our room, while we sat in the bar having drinks.

Our room was lovely with a large leather bed and a massive bathroom. We had such a fantastic nights sleep and the cot provided for our son was lovely also.

We were supposed to be eating at our friends for the whole weekend, but after seeing the menu on the first night we bought our friends up to the hotel to eat on the second night. The chef cooked us special food for our son and also a gluten free meal for my friend all of which were fantastic. There was also a gentleman playing the piano throughout the evening which just made the evening perfect (we had great fun making requests)

Our room was really clean, large and the staff could not do enough for us. With the owner sending someone to the local shop to fetch us more baby wipes and not charging us for it. As customer service goes I have never stayed anywhere that look after you so well.

We booked our room through the hotels website and only saw the tripadvisor comments after we had stayed. We may not have stayed if we had read them first and what a shame some people did not enjoy their stay - we had the most enjoyable experince and we have already booked to stay again, July, September and booked over christmas including christmas day. I am so looking forward to going again.

This hotel is a little hidden treasure and I would recommend it to anyone - thank you for a great weekend and we will see you in July

Stayed one night. I am originally from Derby and have visited the restaurant several times over the years but this wasthe first time have stayed. We ate on the Saturday night and whilst the restaurant was as good a ever they could not manage our 7pm booking due to a group booking and we were waiting an hour. Would have been handy if they had said when booking in ( we could have eaten elsewhere ) as made us late for a family event. The barman was very friendly and clearly enjoys his job. The room was far from ' country house hotel' standard more B & B although to be fair so was the price. The carpet and smell on the staircase makes a poor first impression. It would also be helpful if we were told at reception which floor our room was on - I searched the first floor before trying the second. The door lock played up but I was advised so at reception ( did wonder if they planned to fix it ). I did look in the drawer of the bedside cabinet, it contained the usual bible but also a broken off wardrobe handle, an assortment of tissues and a 2004 Yellow Pages for Derby. Breakfast was reasonable although did hear another table complain there was no brown sauce. Overall the place has a bit of character and at the right discounted price would possibly stay again.

My partner and I joined my cousin and family here to attend our Godson's christening. After reading the previous reviews we entered with trepidation!

This could be an absolutely fabulous boutique property if someone were to inject some finance into it.

However, all areas appear to be dated and in need of some serious refurb. Our bedroom was at the back of the hotel and was ok for a place to sleep. We had a brand new bed which was very comfortable, however this would have been the only thing that has had any money spent on it in the whole room for a VERY long time. My partner made a comment that we have better furniture stored in our attic!!
The windows in our room appeared to be painted open as they were quite difficult to close, but that was ok because the heating was on?!?!

We were also unfortunate enough to hear a massive arguement taking place between the manager and a staff member who was due in at 9am, this arguement went on loudly for over an hour and when we were in our room we could still hear it when running the shower. Quite undignified.

The girls working around the property are nothing short of angels, they are so friendly, helpful and polite at ALL times, which I guess is hard to do when you have to work in an environment such as Kedleston Hotel. Absolutely nothing is too much trouble for them.

The chef who from reading the previous reviews could possibly be the owner??, is a little strange. One of our group had requested poached eggs with the yolks well done and on both days needed to be sent back again. The chef actually made a comment on the second day that he wouldn't cook them again if they were going to be eaten! I think it was meant in jest but who knows. The breakfast is ok but not something I would like to eat everyday as it was greasy and quite unappealing. There is also cereal and juice available. (Just make sure that you help yourself to the mini variety packed cereal as one of our group ended up with a large dead fly in her rice crispies which was from a big packet that was already opened..... YUK!!)
And don't look too closely at the milk jugs on the tables!!!!

There was a young guy serving behind the bar one evening and he wouldn't have been the friendliest, compared to the staff member the night before. This has a direct impact on their revenue as we didn't really feel welcome to stay and therefore did not have as many drinks that evening as we had done the previous night!

I do feel that the rates are over priced for what you actually receive from a value point of view. All in all we enjoyed ourselves but it was mostly at the expence of the randomness of the Kedleston House Hotel.

Wow, what a place.... I had the pleasure of staying here during a very wet July, however the Kedleston Hotel certainly brightened up our weekend!
From the first moment we checked in we were greeted with an extremely friendly receptionist, who more than catered to our every need.
When walking down the stairs the same evening to eat in the restaurant, we were greeted by the wonderful sounds of a very old piano, played expertly by the resident pianst.
The food and service we then experienced in the restaurant, is as good as any we have experienced in our many stays in hotels around the world, with particular care taken with every small detail.
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable stay, and would certainly reccommend it to all of our friends.

Wow! what a place, but for all the wrong reasons. We have lived only two miles away for the last 5 years, but never been before, now we know why.
We came for Sunday lunch but certainly won't return. The actual location is good and very near to Kedleston Hall, but not much else.
We sat at the bar and waited to be served for quite some time, then when we eventually got served, we realised this whole idea was a bad one!
The beer was not the best, and as we sat chatting, the pianist droned on aka Les Dawson !!!!
We sat down in the restaurant, and there was no atmosphere at all. There were only 5 tables being used and the rest were emtpy, and this was Sunday lunch!
The starters came and were very average, but to be fair the main course of Roast Beef was tender and the chicken was tasty but not much of it. The meal comes with assorted veg which were at best average and the chef doesn't seem to have too much expertise or pride based on this occasion. But...... to top it all off we sat there finishing off our meal when there appeared to be an arguement in the kitchen amongst the waiter and kitchen staff, which came complete with swearing. This carried on into the kitchen doorway for all to hear. I later complained to the receptionist who was very apologetic, but it all added to this surreal and laughable experience. We did however, get a discount off the meal but that means nothing as we came away feeling confused and uninspired to what could be a decent location in the right hands. PLEASE ALERT MR Gordon Ramsey as this place would be a massive challenge even to him.
