We stayed there for 3 days after our wedding in Kefalonia, Skinari is beautiful & this restaurant is right near the beach so is handy if you want to eat after all day on the beach before you head back to your apartment, which we did to save the walk up & down the hill, food was ok, not bad price, staff friendly.

Me and my fiancee stayed in LaGrotta 2 times (first august 2012, second May 2013), and every time we've been content. The price is very low, location simply great, whats more - if you stay in la Grotta, you have the trip to the famous Navaggio beach and Blue Caves for free! (Normally it's almost 30 euro). The staff is helpful and polite, breakfast is ok (would prefer non-sweet tastes, like egg, sausage, baked beens over toast with jam, though), rooms are simple, but ok. The refrigerator in the hallway, common for all the rooms seems weird, but it is safe, nothing ever got lost.

The village is beautiful, there is small beach (water is clear and swimming there is safe, it is not in the port itself) with greek restaurant (very good one, plus you can chose the fish you want grilled) and a few tavernas. Perfect as a base for people who travel around and don't seek big resorts and wild nightlife, but a quiet, simple place to eat and sleep.

Definitely would come again!

Room Tip: A room with the balcony, and windows in the port direction - you will get a nice picturesque view.

We stayed just one night in the Grotta. We needed to catch a ferry to Kefalonia early in the morning, so wanted to stay near the port. It couldn't have been any closer to the ferry, and the little harbour was picturesque. Just a few tavernas and a restaurant on the beach where we enjoyed grilled fish and authentic Greek starters and white wine.
The hotel owners did not seem to be expecting us and did not register us in any way, but simply showed us to a room.. The room looked straight out over the harbour and had a pleasant view. It was also very peaceful. However, the room and bathroom could have been cleaner and there was no running water from the sink taps. The shower was tiny and the curtain did little to stop the entire bathroom getting drenched. There were no toiletries or added touches. We did not sleep well - the aircon did not seem to work and we had mosquitoes irritating us all night since we had to sleep with the window open.
The next morning we were given a nice breakfast of orange juice, coffee and toast with jam and butter. The staff were very nice and the price was extremely cheap. 30 euros for bed and breakfast for 2!
For a quick stopover and dinner before the ferry it was fine, i just wish it had been a touch cleaner and we had slept better!

We discovered Hotel La Grotta on a previous visit to the island. We visited the sea side village of Agios Nicholaos (or St Nicholas Port) in the far north east of Zante and fell immediately in love with it. It has a small bay, a couple of tavernas, a white beach with free sunbeds - and only the one small hotel which seems to appear on no website and is contactable only by phone or fax.

La Grotta rooms are few, but have the most wonderful sea views. They are reasonable size, spotlessly clean with twin beds. The en suite was also clean but taking a shower took some skill in the confined space without soaking the whole bathroom. The plumbing is small bore, ancient greek - but we expected that.

We paid € 35 per room per night B&B which was great value. The breakfast was OJ, coffee and olive toast - just enough. They dont check you in, they dont register who you are and they dont give you a bill at the end. It's that kind of low key, old greek, place.

The family who own it make their money from day trip tourists in their restaurant, and from the passengers on/off the twice a day ferry to Kephalonia that sails from right outside the hotel. Outside the comings and goings of the ferry, and occasional island tour bus visitors, the village is quiet for long periods - especially in the evening when the only action is to have a long slow and delicious grilled fresh local fish dinner in the taverna with the crystal clear sea lapping at your feet. Heaven on earth. What a discovery - you read about it here first!

  • Liked — Informal and cheap
  • Disliked — nothing
  • Tips/Secrets — Go there! Car rental from airport - or straight off the Kephalonia ferry.
