“B&B review”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

We stayed here for two nights and found the bedroom very comfortable and our breakfasts very good. Getting up the stairs with a big bag or case is a nightmare. Breakfast is served close to the kitchen and not the bar which is good as we stayed for an evening meal on the first nights and were not pleased. More of that in the restaurant review. Great place to stay, nicely off the beaten track, with great walks along the ridgeway.

Room Tip: We were in room six of the pub. There are some ground floor rooms in the old skittle alley building.

After reading the majority of the reviews here and finding them positive, I feel like myself and my family chose to eat there on the wrong day (it was a fathers day surprise). The visit started on a rather bad note when the highchair we requested( on booking two days before) we found to be covered in mildew. I was expected to sit my 21 month old son in this. I was keen not to make a scene as it was a treat for hubby and father in law and didn't want to ruin the visit, so I explained the situation to the lady behind the bar,who gave me a bottle of anti bac spray to clean it with. She did offer me a free drink which never did materialize. After the meal I returned the anti bac and the (different) waitress behind the bar laughed when I told her what I needed it for and said " oh it must have been left out the back........" . Nobody seemed remotely concerned that it poses a big question over health and safety.
On a positive note, the meals were hot and delicious and I can thoroughly recommend the smoked chicken, should it be on the specials board when you visit. Service was friendly and surrounding countryside was chocolate box beautiful.

We stayed at this country pub for a walking weekend. As other members have reported, the welcome is warm and it is in a very pretty part of Dorset. We stayed in Room 4, one of the rooms in the converted skittle alley. A very comfortable Hypnos bed, plenty of space and a large bathroom. The food was good, although a lot of the meals were rich meat dishes. We had a really enjoyable 2 nights and would be very happy to return.

Other members may like to note that there is a fixed, overhead shower but no shower caps; there is no shop in the village so if you have long hair, bring your own cap! No biscuits on the tea tray either. There is a shop in the next village, Piddletrenthyde. The duvets and pillows are feather, although non-allergy bedding is available on request and staff are really happy to change the beds. Staff are so welcoming and accomodating and the rooms are so comfortable that this is an excellent base for walkers.

Room Tip: Skittle alley rooms have level access to bar and car park.

If you are looking for a taste of rural England then you can't get better than the Brace of Pheasants. My wife (who is American) and I wanted to go to rural England for a change and try out some old English hotels.

The good news is that the Brace of Pheasants is in the middle of nowhere. At night it is totally silent. During the day you only hear the birds.

When we checked in there was a chicken wandering on the road outside and within a few minutes a neighbours greyhound (Willow) had invited herself into the pub and taken her regular spot in-front of the fire.

The room we had (Number 5) was newly refurbished and had a nice 4 poster bed, new Samsung TV, new carpet and a great new bathroom. All very nice.

We ate in, not least because there are no other places to eat in Plush. The food was first rate for an English pub.

If I was in the Dorchester area I would definitely stay again, but I probably wouldn't plan a trip to East Dorset specially to stay at the Brace of Pheasants - hence 4 out of 5. So, if you are in the area do book a stay, it is an excellent little hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in the main building, the extension might be a bit modern and lacking in character.

Came across this place looking through an AA guide of Secret Britain, the book was old so researched on the Internet. Excellent web site which persuaded us to book at the last minute. We were not disappointed, lovely welcome by Sharon who couldn't do enough for us. The room was decorated to a high standard, spacious clean and tidy as was the en suite. The bar served a good range of real ales and wines. Although we ate in the bar the menu choice was good and the food was excellent. Breakfast was served in a separate area, with lovely locally sourced food (the chef brought in eggs from her chickens laid that morning!). Don't be put off by the tired exterior as you will thoroughly enjoy your stay here.

Just returned from the Brace where four couples spent a couple nights!

Beautifully clean and well sized rooms and super English breakfast. We ate in the restaurant both nights and were very impressed with the quality of our meals. Really good local beers as well together with owners and staff that made you feel most welcome!

Room Tip: Room 8 was a very good size and the shower was fine!

Arrived Friday afternoon to a warm welcome and checked in then went for a walk which was absolutely gorgeous, although we did stray into the woods and were told to retreat as people shooting deer there! stay on the top of the hills. Pub was warm and friendly with nice beer and ciders and a great choice of wines. We ate in the pub both nights of our 2 night stay as didn't want to drive although there were other places to eat not that far away e.g. a pub in the next village focussing on an Italian menu. Wasn't keen on the menu as not really a game fan and but that's just my taste. Service was fab. Make sure you book before arrival as was full for lunch and dinner on the Friday. As all the tables are for diners you couldn't really just sit and drink apart from at the bar when it's busy. Room was lovely with a nice window seat, beds really comfy but shower was more of a mist than a power shower. A proper kettle and tea etc is provided plus water which was fab and a good quality hair dryer.Breakfast was nice with Dorset cereals as a choice for cereal. Felt like a good base for seeing different parts of Dorset and the Cerne Abbas man is nearby and you can do a nice walk around that. We stopped at Shaftesbury on the way down and walked down the Hovis ad hill.

Room Tip: Room 8 is nice at the end of the pub with lovely window seat but shower was only a mist not a spray...
