“beautiful great bargain if you just want to relax and walk beaches”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

Ras Michamwi was really really good for us. Yes, it takes 1 hour and 20 mins to get to it but most hotels are very far away from the airport and stonetown. I still cannot believe it is only considered a 2 star hotel. first of all, the bungalows are beautifully typical and huge, massive wood furniture in it, along with greatly working fan, AC and fridge and a huge porch with also massive wood outside furniture to lounge in, in front of such beautiful views, wether it's the ocean or entertaining monkeys! the beds were super comfy, everyone in the morning always was in a coma they slept so well...there are mosquito nets which we are not sure why since we did not see one bug the whole time... but they make the room look really exotic. the water pressure in the shower can be a bit of a downer and the endless pool is not so endless as it is supposed to get up to the top... which was probably the only downer for us. also, about the pool, when we got there it was sparkly clean, after a few days of heath it got really merky but it looked like they were working on getting the pool situation taken care of.
if you are looking for an all inclusive food and activity kind of hotel, THIS IS NOT YOUR HOTEL. we could count on our fingers the number of tourists that would walk by here, instead we often would see local people going fishing, biking by, women wearing their typical dresses and carrying their stuff on the heads etc... which we loved!
the food was perfect. breakfast was always a plate of beautiful fresh fruit along with a freshly made juice, coffee, tea, chocolate, and then your choice of breakfast that you would order, for lunch they had a decent menu, for dinner they d present you with a choice (out of 2, usually a salad or a soup) starters, a main meal (usually the fresh fish, chicken, meat or pasta) and a desert. drinks are decent. nothing really fancy and no exaggeration in any ways, which we like but good. the service was really good, the guys are readily available.
as far as the beaches go... i love to walk beaches on vacation and there s sure tons of that to do! yes, at ras, you can only swim when the hightide is on but there are plenty of other close places to walk to and go out and swim in amazingly clear waters, such as in front of the hotel next to us, and especially at karafoo village. also, to take in consideration, since it is not a very high tourist density there are not many guys to disrupt your vacation with offers of stuff to do or asking for money, which is the other awesome thing! we went with yuma and he did not let us down at anytime. we went snorkeling and diving to menmba, stonetown, prison island and the spice market with him, it was great!
ONE BIG PIECE OF ADVICE! do go to the spice market! BUT do not buy a single spice there. we really got screwed there as we went there first and then to the market in stonetown... spices were about 6 times cheaper there!!! really wish would have know that!
ras also has what i called my own private beach, coconut beach. wow! i was always by myself there ... never felt such quiet and peace before! i ve been to the maldives, french polinesia, hawaii, jamaica and riviera maya but i have to say, rarely i have seen a sand as white and fine as here on zanzibar... mnemba is especially a nice trip i think.
i snorkle while my brother scuba dives...i guess we are a bit spoiled as far as that so we were not ever much impressed with the sites.. i heard they used to mine fish so that took care of some of that. we did however see dolphins. loved the giant turtles on prison island altough that is the only reason why i d suggest to go there, it's now a wealthy hotel. but the turtles love the neck and shoulder massages! so fun.
as for the trip from the aiport to the hotel you should not pay more than 30USD altough we got our first one through the hotel and got charged 60USD, on the way back we found it for 30USD. ... mzungu prices! watch out!
i am gladly available for any information about this hotel.

Room Tip: there are only a few rooms and we had both a garden view on the first night and an ocean view on the...

Felt a bit cheated... The hotel was surround on 2 sides by the sea, with beaches... But the beach was not for swimming, or lazing around.. When the tide is low, things could be seen littering (or growing on?) the beach, and when the tide is high, you know you cud injure yourself..

So was there alternative entertainment? Alas, no... No spa, no real lounge, no TV, nothing really, and not possible to get away anywhere - just too far away.. It has a simple boring pool though, and a simple rustic restaurant with simple rustic food & drinks (which are not always cold) to while away the time...

Was time totally wasted? Not really, it was a nice place to read a book - and the wind keeps blowing and blowing...

Still, one comes away feeling a little cheated; not being able to enjoy the beaches of Zanzibar is a real shame..

Pros
I enjoyed my stay at this lovely resort. The rooms huge nicely decorated and clean. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. It is a little older but very well maintained.
Cons:
No accessible beaches, Far away from EVERYTHING. The transportation is expensive and I pretty much can eat up your budget. while I was there There were only 2 maybe 3 other guests. We never saw them though.
If you want to have absolute peace and quite stay here. If you want to explore the Island, I recommend somewhere in stone town or North beach.

I recently stayed 8 days at the Ras Michamvi. The hotel staff were beyond incredible and always willing to accommodate. They knew all the guests by name. Hotel was extremely clean and food was fantastic. I have several dietary restrictions and they were more than willing to accommodate. There was usually no power during the day but they did warn us upon arriving so we were able to work around it (Its Africa, these things are common there). This didnt really affect my party as we were there to enjoy the sun and beach during the day and the power was always back on by 6pm. The beach was amazing with very fine sand and clear blue water. The hotel organized several day trips for us (at our expense), including a tour of Stone Town, Snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, and we were extremely pleased with all of the excursions. The hotel is in a very quiet location which is ideal for someone looking to relax. Its a very small hotel and, at one point during our stay, we were the only people there. It is very well-kept. The gardens are absolutely beautiful.I have stayed in other hotels in Tanzania and none of them compare to the quality of the Ras. I highly recommend this hotel and would gladly stay there again.

Room Tip: opt for the ocean view, there's nothing greater than waking up, walking out of your room and see...

My daughter and I had an excellent stay 11 day stay at Ras Michamvi. The entire staff was wonderful from helping us to book additional tours around the island, to helping us contact our own tour company, and answering our questions. The hotel is beautifully located in a small cove away from the busy other tourist beaches. The hotel garden areas are filled with flowers. There are miles of beaches to walk and explore during low tide. Locals are out fishing either in boats or by wading in the shallow tides. During high tide the pool is available and a higher level beach area is available for sunbathing. The dining staff were exceptional adding a vegetarian dish every night for my daughter. Our room staff left flowers and sculptured towels every morning. This is a wonderful place to just relax and enjoy time away from the more tourist/party oriented areas. We felt like royalty during our stay at Ras Michamvi.

We went there after a hard trek on Kilimandjaro to relax and the goal was achieved. Very nice location and nice hotel. The view is awesome. The staff is very friendly and makes you feel special. We took the snorkeling trip and I saw one of the nicest beach I have seen in my life.
