After climbing Kilimanjaro, Kichange Lodge was the perfect dose of relaxation. The food was great, the service and staff were excellent, and incredibly friendly. The location was perfect, we were upgraded to sea view rooms, with great views and an incredibly short walk to the beach. Only comment could be that the cocktails could have been slightly better.. but that is nit picking. We also visited 'The Rock' which was a fantastic afternoon, incredible food, great atmosphere and even better location, once again the staff were great.

There is no greater rustic and peaceful place on this planet!

You will literally relax as you arrive to wonderful friendly staff who take care of you from when you arrive at breakfast, at your leisure, to when you go to bed at night. Nigel is always hands on and without a doubt the most 'can do' host we have ever met.

It is very romantic and fun with endless surrounding turquoise sea that will take your breath away. The ocean is filled with life, which is something that we don't see very often anymore.

After a run along the beautiful white beach, we spent lazy mornings lying under the trees or on the beach or at the pool, sipping coconut water or cocktails. There really is something for everyone whether you wish to relax completely or prefer a more active holiday. Even the ocean accommodates that, with the different tides, one can either wade far out in shallow tranquil warm sea or wait for the waves to come up later on for some fun!

The food is absolutely delicious and always fresh (the best seafood and catch of the day). The restaurant caters for everyone, with a buffet spread for breakfast, a lovely choice for lunch and incredible dinners with a great choice of wines.

We ventured via a dhow, snorkling on the deep sea of coral reefs, dolphins and a seafood lunch on a beach on an island. What an incredible experience and all safe and very well organised.

'The Rock' is a lifetime experience and a must do whilst there!

I would happily take our children along the next time that we visit Kichanga, it is the perfect kiddy holiday too.

If you are looking for a less rustic holiday Dongwe Ocean View is absolutely lovely and also comes highly recommended!

There are many other excursions which can be organised through the Kichanga.

Both are great value for money. We cant wait for our next holiday there! :)

Room Tip: We had a sea facing room, which was magnificent

The sea breeze drifting in and around cabana was astounding and restful.
The beach extended out to 1/3 mile as the tide went out allowing walks into the sea.
Full board meals were extravagant with fresh eggs, meats, fruits and brewed coffee.
Special dinner items posted each night on chalk board enticed us to try local grilled seafood, meats (beef) and chef prepared "on the spot" side dishes.
Bar/lounge area comfortable to relax reading while watching the waves, playing games and napping.

The cabana spacious for three people (two separate beds) and room included dressing room and bathroom (shower). A/C not necessary and no problems with bugs. Staff -prepares draws down bed and closes cabana shutters each night.

Definitely a place to visit and relax after safaris.

We've really ruined ourselves for all future travels now! Our time at Kichanga Lodge was so spoiled and romantic. Often we were the only two on the beach! After visiting the west coast of Zanzibar (Kendwa and Nungwe in the north), our decision to stay on the east side allowed us front row seats to canteloupe-coloured sunrises. A short walk towards Ras Mchamvi provided a view of the Indian Ocean that paralleled that from outerspace. The tidal pools (the tide here goes out over a mile) are such a delight to poke around in. There are beach shoes available, but best to bring your own (and local kids will appreciate them upon your departure)--there are loads of sea urchins (easily avoided), but a very clear path out to remarkable sandbars and water so clear that you don't even need snorkeling equipment.
The lodge itself is a rustic marvel. At night a breeze sweeps through the open-concept candle-lit dining area. Almost everyone gathers earlier for drinks at the adjacent bar and lounge area where a carefully chosen soundtrack barely interrupts conversation. There are free bar snacks, piles of magazines and shelves of trader books for guests (though, if you are English-speaking, Dutch and German titles dominate!). The best perch is in the loft area above the bar and dining area where you can watch the moon rise and maybe have the company of one of the lodge dogs or cats at your feet.
We opted for the ocean front bungalow--the wide front porch with hammock and a love seat-sized chair was where we welcomed and closed each day--taking in the natural soundtrack around us. If you are a light sleeper, the night here is very "alive" (not with disco or music) with the buzz of cicadas, crashing waves, the resident donkeys in the distance and seemingly hundreds of crows at sunrise. All of which I thought was perfect, but left my partner tossing and turning. There is no air conditioning here, so, the wonky fan might keep you wide-eyed as well.
The beds come with mosquito nets and staff spray the rooms nightly. The showers are hot (if you can stand it!) and shampoo, conditioner and locally made seaweed soaps are provided. The room comes with seperate beach towels and a straw beach bag that was indispensable for us. There is also a huge dressing room with shelving that isn't seen in the lodge photos. We requested a bar fridge for this space (they are available for no additional fee) as we picked up a case of beer before leaving Stonetown. Once you are at Kichanga, taxi fees are expensive and grocery and liquor stores can only be found in the larger towns like Kendwa. We had a half-board option (breakfast and dinner) and only purchased lunch a few times during our stay. Margherita pizzas are filling ad loaded with cheese and oregano for $8. Nearby at Ras Mchamvi you can grab blue marlin burgers with fries or club sandwiches for $5 and $6. The lodge also offers a free afternoon tea and coffee with biscuits and sweet loaf around 4pm that fills any hunger gaps.
During our two week stay at Kichanga we embarked on three excursions: to Jozani Forest with a pick up at The Rock ($40), to the marine turtle sanctuary in Nungwe, the beaches of Kendwa and the slave chambers and coral caverns ($120) and on another day, a drop-off in Stonetown (we arranged our own boat to Prison Island for $35) and pick-up after sundown at Africa House ($80). We arranged these through Juma, a charming tout on the beach in front of Kichanga who was was happy to design custom trips for us.
The buffet at Kichanga has the standard breakfast bar (cold cereal, fresh fruit), chapatis, toast, pastries, donuts, eggs any style, beans and sometimes sausage. Coffee and tea are available earlier (7am) for the sunrise crowd.
Dinner had its staples of pickled cukes, tomatoes, slaws, breadsticks, rice and fruit and a rotation of tarts, cake and eclair-like desserts. The mains ranged from a nightly feature of barbequed crab, octopus, squid or beef tenderloin. The Swahili night (Sundays) was our favourite--golden samosas, collards, fried vermicelli, a local lime-broth soup with fried cassava, chicken and beef kebabs, baked eggplant and cashew brittle. And the King fish curry? Outstanding.
Wine is extremely cheap at $22 a bottle (Golden Knaan--merlot, sauvignon or chardonnay). Beer (500ml) is $4.50, while mixed cocktails start at $6.50. Bottles of water (1 litre) are $2, though you are supplied with two small water bottles a day in your room.
The staff are extremely friendly and a joy to be with--especially George. He is the front man of the bar and a pure delight to talk to. Very professional and his enthusiasm to satisfy expectations is refreshing.
We were entirely impressed and charmed with our time at Kichanga. The owners have made an incredible effort to create an indulgent, welcoming space of pure relaxation. Whether you choose to flop into a hammock by the pool or grab lounge chairs under the coconut trees on the upper private beach, there is great solitude here. The beachcombing on the way to The Rock (25 minute walk) is unreal--and you may just see some blue monkeys in the trees along the beach.
If you're looking for rustic, private and romantic--this is the lodge for you. If you're expecting fancy a la carte meals, air conditioning, flat screen televisions, coordinated beach activities and a night disco--go to Kendwa (the "Italian Riveira" of Zanzibar. There's a wi-fi connection available for a fee in the main lodge but otherwise, Kichanga is (hurray) off the grid. You will be amazed by the recharge found in the lack of light pollution (stars!), tidal pool exploration, lazy days of reading and quiet dinners sipping wine.
Go! Like us you will wonder where you could ever travel to that would come close to the unparallel beauty of the Indian Ocean and the peace found at Kichanga.

Room Tip: Bungalow #2 has the most amazing view and a loft space with additional beds. For the private deck an...

My partner and I are in a great position to review, having stayed in three different rooms while at Kichanga - a sea view lodge, a garden view lodge and a villa.

We had booked a garden view lodge, but in the confusion of our very late arrival (4am), were placed in a more expensive sea view room. Having been delayed for 13 hours in Ethiopia, we were doubtful that there would be anyone awake, but we were greeted by three smiling Maasai security guards.

The next morning we were awakened by a beautiful sunrise, a perfect Robinson Crusoe-esque palm tree and white sand beach and a pleasant sea breeze. The room was huge and surprisingly cool. The lodge was designed well, to provide ample ventilation, with high ceilings and side openings, to give a calm through draft.

Breakfast was a nice mix of pastries, fruits, juice and coffee, with chefs on standby to cook eggs, sausages etc, and pancakes. We were greeted by friendly waiting staff, who already knew who we were, and there was a genuine sense of sympathy for our delay. We were advised to order lunch in the morning, and were free to choose when we ate.

While there are 23 lodges on site, you wouldn't realise it, as there is plenty of space to not see anyone. We were often sat by an empty pool or clear section of beach. While there are a couple of pedlars on the beach, offering snorkelling trips etc., they were polite and did not pester us. They introduced themselves, offered there sell and left you alone. They even advise on the best route out into the sea, past the sea urchins.

The best part of the day was afternoon tea, put on by the lodge, from the beach cafe. They knew I was taking more than my share of biscuits and never even raised an eyebrow.

Dinner was a mix of fairly western food, with salads, rice, pasta etc., as well as a BBQ. Sunday offers African food, and music, with waiters wearing traditional dress.

Later in our week, we had to move into the room we'd paid for. The staff had juggled bookings around to keep us in our sea view room for most of our stay, which was so kind. The garden view room was pleasant enough, and would have been fine had we not seen the better room first. It also coincided with us getting ill from our Malaria medication. The reduced breeze from the sea was sorely missed. The staff showed genuine concern, and we were given some simple medication, and offered advice. We were also given boiled rice and lime, and pressured to eat it, like your mum would do. It really helped.

Due to our illness, we had to delay our flights and stay, and we moved to a villa for our additional days. This was once again huge, and had a lovely breeze again. The villas would suit a family perfectly, with a mezzanine floor for the children. They each have a private terrace, with a swing bed and sofa.

All in all, our stay was amazing. There is nothing lacking in what I had hoped for. Staff are friendly and helpful. Simple touches like bottled water in the room, straw hats and beach bags/ towels, free bar snacks, all make a huge difference. Once we can find a route there that avoids Addis Ababa, we will be returning!

Room Tip: Definitely worth the extra for a sea view. The breeze is a god-send.
