“Hidden Treasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2012

I stopped off here for 2nights after spending some time working in the North. It's off the beaten track and you're not really sure where you are going to end up as you drive down a long dirt track but what awaits you at the end is worth it. It is a hidden treasure, the staff were friendly and very helpful, they couldnt have looked after us any more than they did. You are right on the beach where you can sit in the little huts and look out over the lake or go for a walk and meet the locals as they come in from fishing.
I'd recommend stopping off here if you want a few days to relax and unwind.

Room Tip: Go for one of the self serving houses if you can, they are a little bit removed from the main buildi...

As a two night stop off by Lake Malawi travelling from Mzuzu to Lilongwe I can highly recommend Fish Eagle Bay. Off the beaten track, directly on Lake Malawi you will find this wonderful waterside retreat. Rooms tastefully decorated, clean and spacious, this lodge was the perfect location to unwind after a very busy week. Staff could not have been more welcoming or helpful and served up a tasty menu both nights. Worth a visit if you are in this area of Malawi.

At $7 per campsite this place is great! The campsite is right on the beach, it's clean, has lights, power socket, water tap, braai pit and shade with table and bench. It's everything you would need at a campsite. It's very secluded though and we were the only guests here when we stayed. They have good reasonably priced food (and beers!) and very friendly staff.

It might help other travellers to confirm the good reviews of Fish Eagle Bay Lodge: the location is lovely, onto a wide, beautiful sandy beach, and the Africa-style chalets are lovely too, though a little constrained by the very rural location. We found the food good rather than outstanding - we were there in June, and it felt a little abandoned and isolated. But if perfect peace is what you want, then this is ideal. The managers and staff could not have been more helpful. The only drawback was the location: the taxi ride from Nkhota Kota was expensive (we should have telephoned the Manager first!), no way could we have walked over the long, rather rough access road from the main road with baggage! Management very kindly gave us a lift back to the main road when we left. Excellent value, as described, and for what is provided, full marks!

I regularly visited the Fish Eagle Bay lodge in Aug-Oct 2011 whilst working in nearby Nkhotakota. The location is stunning, right on the shores of the magnificent Lake Malawi, with beautiful, long stretches of beach, which are almost deserted, with just a few locals around and almost no other tourists.

The food was top notch - a good selection of local specialities like chambo and nsima along with some international dishes as well, like curry, chips, pasta etc.

it was definitely the highlight of the week to take a trip down to Fish Eagle Bay on our day off and relax on the beach with an ice cold glass of wine or soft drink, enjoying a peace and quiet, cooling off in the lake or playing a game of Bau in the shade of the veranda.

Fish Eagle Bay Lodge is easy to get to from nearby Nkhotakota as the turn-off is on one of the main roads out of town. You can take a taxi, or if you are feeling more adventurous then take one of the local minibuses/pick-up trucks and ask to stop at the Sani turn-off. Its about 5-6km from the turn off and you can take a bicycle taxi for very cheap. Personally I enjoyed the walk - getting some fresh air and exercise and enjoying the African countryside. Some of the local children can be a bit pushy though, so if that makes you uncomfortable then maybe best not to walk. I've heard that since I was there they have improved the road a lot so you can probably take a taxi right to the front gate.

The owners and staff were really friendly and helpful - they even gave us a lift back to Nkhotakota! We were always made to feel very welcome, without being constantly pestered as you are in some places.

If you are looking to travel to Malawi and want to stay somewhere beautiful and tranquil then I would definitely recommend Fish Eagle Bay Lodge. They are easy to get to from Lilongwe, via bus or minibus.

We were driving up from South Africa to Kenya via Moz and Malawi. Second day in Malawi found us near Nkhotakota and Fish Eagle Bay Lodge was recommended by some local kids in the town. Found Anchen and Camille a haven from the trip and their spot on the lake is wonderful. Their hospitality is legendary and it was a great break on the trip.

The lodge is set up to use Solar power and is as eco-friendly as possible.

Camille and Anchen went out of their way to help us get more diesel while the shortage was in effect.
