“Away from crowds and noise.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

Wonderful family vacation. Fun is up to you. Go if you like quiet, nature and adventure.
Suitable for families with older kids. There is no swimming pool so take your wet suit and snorkel gear. Good hiking shoes are recommended.
Excellent and plentiful menu. You will not leave the table hungry. Have dinner here to increase the relaxation mode.
The place is very tidy and clean. Be sure to call ahead of time as I am sure it books fast.
I liked the fact that they have good wine available at a good price.
Irene and Bruce are very polite and give you all the privacy you want. Bruce even went to the beach with us and the kids.
We will never forget this vacation.

This year, for our winter sun break, we made plans to head to Mexico. Casa Mediodía is located near La Bufadora, a small town about 45 minutes southwest of Ensenada overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A friend of ours spends winters nearby and recommended it to us. We were not disappointed.

The B&B is located about a mile out of town, on a slope with a spectacular view to the south along the rugged Pacific coastline. Bruce and Irene are the innkeepers. From the moment we arrived, we felt as if we were family.

The B&B consists of two buildings: one with several guest rooms and the other with two more accommodations and a common area serving as a dining area and living room. This room is brimming with books and games for all ages. We enjoyed background music and a record collection numbering in the hundreds that Bruce and Irene have accumulated over the years. “What’s a record,” you ask? Bruce will show you how to operate the turntable.

Then there’s the hospitality. That Irene is of Italian ancestry explains why we ate well. Each morning, breakfast starts with several juices. Main courses during our stay included frijoles, tostadas, enchiladas, quiche, Belgian waffles, omelets and more. We especially enjoyed a chili and egg dish, requesting an encore our last morning there. Fresh fruits, banana bread and coffee cake fill in any empty spots. We don’t have any special dietary needs but Irene says that she tries to customize the meals to the taste and preference of her guests. I told her if we go away hungry, it’s our own fault.

Irene and Bruce both joined us most mornings for breakfast. While we ate, we had the opportunity to learn more about the area. We talked about things to see and do nearby as well as life in Mexico and topics of interest to all of us. When news of the local crab catch arriving at a roadside stand reached us, we headed over were soon savoring a huge crustacean between four of us. The breakfast is family style: we all sit at one table and had the opportunity to get better acquainted with a family from Tijuana weekending at the Casa.

The surrounding area is desert with hiking opportunities. In the mornings, I would climb a nearby hill for an inspiring view of La Bufadora and the surrounding area as the sun rose behind me. There are several other paths accessing beach areas. Regarding tides and currents, some beaches are safer that others. The town of La Bufadora has a waterspout which is the reason that tour buses bring visitors from Ensenada. It’s worth about a mile walk (or a drive) into town to check out. If you like rows of vendors along the street accessing the attraction, you won’t be disappointed.

Although we went into Ensenada several times—it is a bit of a drive—we like the tranquility of the desert setting and slept well in the quiet surroundings and fresh air. If you don’t have a car, La Bufadora has local bus service from Ensenada, with one transfer, for those feeling comfortable on public transit. Irene or Bruce will pick you up if you arrive in town by bus.

Would we stay there again? Absolutely. We feel that the price and setting, and especially Irene and Bruce’s warm hospitality, are perfect for the type of traveling we enjoy.
