Oinan Guesthouse is situated overlooking Telescopes break in Mapadegat Bay 4 kilometres south of the harbourtown of Tua Pajet on SIpora Island. As the official first guests to this beautfully appointed home away from home we were 'guinea-pigged' somewhat with the menu but we encouraged them to cook for us as they would for themselves and gave them some further tips on western needs and preferences. We were charged local prices for the meals and breakfast was included in the price.
There are 4 main rooms. A family room with two large beds and a couples room with one upstairs. These rooms have shelves, mosquito nets and a coathangers and a share bathroom. If you book both rooms the whole upstairs area is closed off for your private use, including bathroom, the two balcony areas with table and chairs and a large living area. In the future the upstairs area will also provide a library/reading/computer area with internet access.
Downstairs there are two air-conditioned rooms with two single beds in each, one with an ensuite and one without. There is also another bathroom with shower and toilet which is shared with the family. The staff all use the facilities attached to the kitchen and laundry area. Underneath the stairs is an area for storing surfboards are wet gear. In the future they plan a lock up board and bike place.
Oinan is not your typical Mentawaian homestay as it has western toilets and a shower in each bathroom! The water is not heated but in the weather we had I was not up for hot water showers anyhow. The upstairs bathroom is open air so you can shower with a great view of the ocean out one window and the jungle out the other.
The outdoor dining area is in a bali style gazebo and has a tv with cable, video and music facilites.
We found the staff all very helpful with a good command of English and the added benefit of Ray the Managers experience with surfaid and his other ngo work background he was so useful and resourceful in all matters of getting from a to b in the Ments. At times petrol is hard to find but we never had any problems with Ray around. He is also a great fisherman!!
Another great benefit of Oinan was their helpfulness with Ambu Ambu Ferry pickups and bookings, organising luggage, boards etc and they even had their own boat to take us surfing with. We spent a day surfing at Telescopes and then Suicides and they even brought us a packed lunch!
Oinan is also currently finishing off another accomodation destination on Awera Island. Don't forget to ask about a day trip or stay there too!
Prices were still being confirmed but we got a great rate of 125,000 ea per night with meals around the 15,000 each and laundry extremely cheap too. I paid less than 1 million for almost a week including everything! Thats just over AU$100!
I would expect that prices for the family room in the future to be more like 250 -500,000 rupiah for the upstairs rooms and 125-250,000 for the downstairs ones. These prices put this accomodation into the more expensive bracket but it is well worth it as they are so helpful and it is so clean and comfortable compared to other existing homestays in the Mapadegat area.
Oinan has lifted the bar in the Homestay category in the Mentawai Islands and well worth a stay. You can walk to the local boat guy at the bottom of the hill to catch a local surf boat for 50,000 per person per trip. There is a great little noodle house just down the hill, and a traditional long house as well. Just up the hill you can walk to the main road intersection where there is shopping and a place to hitch a ride. You can hitch a ride on the back of a random motorbike as they pass for about 10,000 and if you need internet connection at the moment you need to pay Surfaid International a visit at Kilometre 1 and say hi to new CEO Petra, cos they allow you to use their WIFI if you ask nicely!
Theres plenty of lovely people who want to help make your stay fun and enjoyable. Just becareful about the ferry bookings as you might have your cabin whipped out from you if a govt offical makes a last minute booking! It didn't happen to us but we heard that it happens on occasion.
Also the bank in Tuapajet has no foreign money changing facilities and our cirrus cards didn't work in the ATM so make sure you bring enough cash with you to pay your bills! There is a Commonwealth Bank ATM in Padang that you can take 1.5mil per transaction, so do it before you leave the mainland.
Enjoy your stay in the Ments! It is a very special place with many special beautiful places to visit.
