“Chateau of your dreams!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

So you've dreamed of going to France and staying in a romantic chateau hotel, dining at a Michelin starred restaurant, visiting a wine cave and tasting the wines and having a charming room with a dramatic view, it's all here under one big beautiful roof. In addition to all the features above you'll find a very helpful, pleasant staff to answer your needs. As a travel professional who's visited a great many charming hotels over thirty plus years of organizing high end European bicycle tours, I rank Chateau de Mercues as one of the very best places I've ever stayed. Go and indulge in the rich regional cuisine and healthful Cahors wine of the Lot region and see for yourself.

Room Tip: Indulge and upgrade to one of the rooms with the bath in the turret.

We had been traveling in southwestern France for 2 weeks and were faced with arranging hotels for our last week. We happened upon Chateau Mercues in booking.com while searching for someplace near Cahors, and decided to treat ourselves to a chateau stay. It certainly met our goal.

Our room in the older section facing east over the gardens and pool was absolutely huge and very traditionally furnished. It looked like the castle room of your imagination. We tried the pool, but it was too cold for us (mid-September) and just sunned instead. It seemed thepool area could use some sprucing up. Unfortunately, we missed the wine cellar tour, an interesting "extra" for hotel guests.

Service in the large restaurant was exceptional, if perhaps a little over the top. The food also was good, but there seemed to be a greater emphasis on the many interesting "tid bits" before the main dinner was served than on the main courses themselves. Altogether, a little overwrought, and not really worth the price. This may be what most of the hotel guest expect, however.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a tradionally decorated room. After all, you are staying in a 16th century palace...

Nested in the heart of Cahors wine region, and strategically situated on a hill above the Lot River near the city of Mercues, this is an excellent example of a romantic medieval castle. It has most of the ingredients for a mystical, overnight, weekend or longer stay in a castle venue that oozes romance. However, the cuisine selection is very limited, and meals are not always prepared to the likes of the customer. On the evening of 7 October 2012, I ordered a Cote de Boeuf. Typically, I order a well done steak. That's the way I like them. Other folks can eat what they like. I will eat what I enjoy. The steak I received was medium rare. I asked the waitress to please take it back to the kitchen, and have the cook prepare it well done. When the steak came back, it was, still, medium rare with lots of fat. I was paying for a lean, well-done, steak not a fatty medium rare one. So, either the waitress re-cooked it or the cook was just arrogant.

We stayed at the Chateau de Mercues Sept 9. The castle is beautiful, we were given a wonderful room, nothing to fault this exceptional place. Unfortunately the 9th was a Sunday, so their Michelin-starred restaurant was closed. We were sent to a restaurant about fifteen minutes away where we had one of the most wonderful dinners we have ever had. Perfect in every way. So all in all, in future, we would make sure that the Chateau's restaurant was open, but would not hesitate to stay there again.

Château de Mercues is one of the oldest Relais&Château of France, basically one of the founding member. No wonder your grand father was used to this place. It has changed a bit thought since then !

Very glad to have you back, hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay.

Chateau de Mercues has a long standing tradition in hospitallity and great cuisine. We arrived late on a September night and staff was waiting and prepared. Yes we were fortunate to be upgraded to the towersuite but reception was warm and considerate. I had been advised that the kitchen was closed but had requested a room snack, nothing can describe our pleasure at being served a wonderful cheese and foie platter with a great bottle of Chateau Haute-Serre.
We all slept like babies and my 4 yr old boy could not believe his eyes when i took him for a morning stroll in the castles garden ending in a refreshing swim. Followed by what we considered the breakfast of refined taste with freshly made compotes, smoothies and jams, local cheeses. Points of concern, mainly the bathrooms hygiene with smelling loo!
But to be honest, Chateau de Mercues was my grandfather favourite stopover in France and it is mine. My suggestion, stay a few more days.

As a seasoned Relais et Chateaux visitor I felt underwhelmed by this hotel which was physically beautiful but let down by inadequate concierge services coupled with a general feeling that our stay was not important to them.

Your comments are very precious to us, sorry to hear your experience was not quite what one could expect from a Relais & Chateaux. Next time you come we will try to make it up to you.

This is not the main restaurant, it is the lun ch restaurant. It is open to the public.

Outdoor seating possible and recommended, superb view of the surroundings.
Choice between 3 starters, 3 entrees and 3 deserts in a lunch menu priced at € 29.

Very fine food, excellent service, limited wine list (& surprise knowing that the owner is a wine marchand).

Can recommend.

Room Tip: Did not sleep there, the review is only about the restaurant.

Thank your for your comment, “Le 13 heures” is indeed one of the best sought after meals in the area. Glad to hear you liked it. As for the winelist, it is indeed more aimed at presenting the wines of the vigouroux family and their friends which still represents a fairly wide range of wine.
