I traveled to Porirua as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Global Village. My teammates and I stayed at the Belmont Motor Lodge, a few minutes from the site where we were building.
The problem at the motel is with the manager, Susie. From the day we arrived to the day we left (10 days), she questioned why we were there, telling us that New Zealand is not a third world country, everyone can get welfare, not everyone needs to own a house, and we shouldn’t be doing what we’re doing there. If I want to spend my money and my vacation time building houses for those less fortunate, wherever they may be, it’s my business. We paid for a place to stay, not for lectures and opinions.
The hotel is clean, but poorly insulated. I was always cold there, despite having on layers of clothing. If you leave the heater on, Susie will get upset. I always felt like she was spying on us. I had traveled all over New Zealand, and met many Kiwis, and she has been the only person to make me feel unwelcome in this lovely country.

We are very disappointed to receive this response as we went out of our way for this group. We gave them two extra rooms at no charge to make them more comfortable, we spent hours talking, guiding and explaining areas of interest through out the country. We bought them hokey pokey ice cream and other NZ treats which we left them in their rooms to try.

Heating was a big issue with this group. They ran the heaters continuously and even when going out to work for the day they were left on along with the lights. We asked them many times to consider the environment and also the safety aspect especially when you went into the room while they were out to find the heater on and clothes up against it. (we do have a guest laundry and heated towel rails) . Many times we noticed these guests in shorts and tee shirts with the heaters blasting away. We had other issues particularly one room whose occupants preferred to cohabitate in complete disarray and was a disgrace to Habitat for Humanity. Some of this group had no consideration for other guests, staff and management even though we tried!!!!!!!
