This animal sanctuary is tucked away behind the Heron Pub. It's quite run down (it's been going for many years) and as you walk around it's a random collection of pens, crates and out houses. In them are small animals such as terrapins, rabbits and birds and larger animals such as sheep, goats, owls and a pig. You can't feed any of the animals because they are strict diets and they stopped selling food because people just gave it to any of the animals, even if it was inappropriate. The one member of 'staff' we saw (I think he owned it) was very pleasant and told us when he was feeding what animal so we could watch.
The paths are just straw lain on the ground so in wet weather you need wellies. The space is cluttered with old caravans, trailers, animal cages (probably from people who have left their animals with the sanctuary; they take in unwanted pets although not cats and dogs), and other random items which gives it a 'junk yard' feel. There is also a 'play area' which my daughter was quite happy with but made me shiver a bit at her playing in it; this is also just a collection of what appears to be donated slides, play houses and see saws that appear to have been dumped all together and are never washed or cared for.
We went off season and the 'cafe and gift shop' was a very cluttered room with an assortment of chairs, and other random items which wasn't selling anything (no drinks, no souvenirs).
HOWEVER, the animals are quite obviously cared for and happy and they come right up close to you as you wander around. And this, after all, is the important bit of any animal sanctuary. It's only £3 to get in (free for under 3s) and you can spend as long as you like, although you'll probably only need an hour. On weekends they do horse rides and birthday parties.
We used it as a stop off to kill some time and it was fine. They really need an injection of money and they really need a skip to bin the random things around the place but as long as you don't go expecting too much, it does they job of showing the children the animals...
