“Very average”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012 via mobile

Poor service, bar staff more interested in chatting and did not have a clue on how to serve a drink. Food service very average, order at the bar was very slow and had to be done at the end of the bar? Food was large, but typical pub food, badly presented and tasted how it looked. It's time to step into the modern world, and raise your game. Will not visit again.

“Canal side location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

Called in for a drink so cannot comment on the food. The location, directly by the canal, is lovely. Huge beer garden directly canalside which I imagine comes into its own in the summer. Outside seating also available in front of the entrance. The pub itself is fairly large and set in extensive grounds has some nice touches - in particular an open fire towards the rear windows. Some interesting pictures are hung throughout and the outside lights make the building welcoming.

Asked for a wine list but it appears wine is only available by the bottle so instead settled for a G&T. Alcohol free beer - Holsten - is sold. Food menu looked very extensive with typical 'pub grub' and was reasonably priced. Most of the other people present were eating.

“Yuk”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

When we visited the Black Boy we sat outside and none of the tables had been cleared, there were flies buzzing around everywhere and it was the same when we went to the bar. Needless to say we changed our mind about ordering food.

The view over the canal is nice outside, would recommend it for a drink maybe.

“The place is tired..”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012

Too much choice - all out of microwavable bags no doubt.. unimaginative combinations, salads.. The seating is all about cramming the visitors in not about a welcoming experience. have a look at the Heron's Nest just down the road.. lovely log fires in the winter.. much nicer choice of foods and the chips there look and taste so much nicer... Come on Black Boy.. you have a lovely position - sort the interior out - put some passion into your table plans, decor and food and you are surely onto a winner. We don't want loads of choice - just two or three fresh, honest home cooked meals... a hearty vegetable based soup with crusty bread and proper butter.. a veggie option and a couple of fish options and you will be turning the crowds away.
