I have just spent the most wonderful week on the Lassithi Trek run from Hotel Velani, Avdou. This was the first Lassithi Trek of the 2013 season and this early in the year we had perfect, sunny but cool weather the entire time; just right for comfortable riding long hours in the saddle.
Sabine and Manolis were the most gracious hosts and were genuinely concerned to make sure we had a top time. Generous breakfasts, and dinner true Cretan style, where dish after dish of delicious food was brought out of Manolis' kitchen for everyone at the table to sample and savour, made every day a gourmet experience. And oh! the Greek yoghurt!!!
Scenery through the mountains - some peaks still with a smattering of snow - was astounding and dropping down onto the Lassithi Plateau by negotiating the ancient donkey trail was breathtaking. As was the view across the Libyan Sea far below when we had crossed the mountains to the south.
The mountain terrain necessitated steady pace but this gave time to really take in the environment and be glad that all that broke the silence was birdsong and sheep/goat bells. It was like taking a step back in time. On the homeward stretches the going was more forgiving and we bowled along nicely through acres of olive groves and vineyards, lovely little whitewashed villages bright with geraniums and bougainvillea and periodically, alongside streams lush with greenery.
Anybody vaguely interested in horses should consider this holiday. It was just fantastic! Do it!
